IGD: Padres @ Phillies (24 Aug 07)

Game #127
time: 4:05 p.m. PT
tv: 4SD
sp: Greg Maddux (9-9, 3.90) vs Jamie Moyer (11-6, 4.12)
pre: Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com

Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer both made their big-league debuts in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs. Moyer’s first game came on June 16. He beat Steve Carlton and the Phillies, 7-5, at Wrigley Field. The first batter Moyer faced, ex-Padre Ron Roenicke, doubled but was left stranded when Mike Schmidt rapped into a 5-4-3 double play started by Davey Lopes.

Ryne Sandberg and Gary Matthews each collected two hits in support of Moyer, as did ex-Padres Keith Moreland (technically he was still a future Padre at this point) and Jerry Mumphrey. Leon Durham hit a two-run homer and Lee Smith collected the 122nd save of his career.

Maddux got the call 2 1/2 months later, taking the loss in a September 2 game started by Moyer. Maddux served up a solo homer to Billy Hatcher (traded by the Cubs in December 1985 to Houston for the aforementioned Mumphrey) with one out in the 18th inning that gave the Astros an 8-7 victory. Nolan Ryan had gotten the start opposite Moyer.

Others who played on the ’86 Cubs include Shawon Dunston, Chris Speier (Justin’s dad), Terry Francona, Rafael Palmeiro, Dennis Eckersley, Rick Sutcliffe, and Ed Lynch (former Cubs GM). Ronald Reagan was president and the Soviet Union still existed, as did the Berlin Wall.

The #1 song of the year according to Billboard was the dreadful Burt Bacharach offering “That’s What Friends Are For” (Burt has done some fine work, but this is not an example of it). The top television show was “The Cosby Show” and the #1 movie in America was “Top Gun” (followed closely by “Crocodile Dundee”).

You understand, right? If you’re nodding your head, then you’re old like me. Oh well, at least I have time for a quick nap before “Murder, She Wrote” starts…

  1. I think you need to actually slide for it to be a “good take out slide.” His knee did eventually hit the ground but that was after he had already made contact with Giles. Maybe this will get Giles fired up and he’ll start to hit. Hey, 1-1 since the incident!

  2. Wow, Maddux failed to bunt. Wow. Shocking!!

  3. 52: He didn’t want to deprive anyone of the chance to GIDP.

  4. NO GIDP THIS INNING! NO GIDP THIS INNING!

  5. JENGA!!!!

  6. EVEN BETTER THAN NO GIDP!

  7. OH MILTY! WAY TO TELL THEM TO GO TO HELL!!!!

  8. I’m lovin’ Bradley’s bat. Not lovin’ Bradley’s sportsmanship.

  9. Back to back!

  10. BACK-TO-BACK!!!

  11. What was that, Quis, about Moyer’s “another good start” against the Pads? Usually you wait until a guy pitches at least 5 full innings.

  12. Man, Khalil better get going. Adrian has zoomed by him as team home run leader.

  13. 58: He was fired up from the Marcus incident. I love to see that he cares.

  14. What did Bradley do?

  15. 64: After hitting the HR (which was a no doubter) he flung the bat hard, kind of like saying, “Take that, bitches”. He apparently stared down Ruiz as he crossed the plate, but I didn’t see that myself.

  16. 64: He slammed the bat down in victory. I saw it from across the room and thought he was slamming it down in frustration out of hitting a lazy pop fly. But it was him gloating or whatever.

I know it’s him caring and “Milton being Milton”. But just doesn’t seem like Padres baseball sometimes.

  17. 66: I stand corrected. I have the sound off so I dunno what’s going on, but apparently Milton thought he got under it too much. I thought it was gone off the bat, but apparently Milty didn’t think he got it all.

  18. You know, I could totally see poor sportsmanship as an unexploited skill. You get someone that will regularly piss off the other team and then enjoy the extra 5-10 times someone reaches base because of a HBP.

  19. 67: No, I think you’re right. When I saw the replay it looked like he was doing it in victory. I just couldn’t see very well from across the room and on my mlb.tv connection.

  20. Apparently even the Phils announcers are saying that Milton’s HR was a cheapie, so I don’t think he flung the bat in celebration as I originally thought. Apparently he hit a Citizens Banks gimme, so I think we can all just be proud it went out and leave it at that.

  21. 69: I called my parents (who are back in SD) since I had the sound off. On SD4, they’re saying his initial reaction was one of frustration since he thought he got under it.

This is further corroborated by the Phils announcers bitching that it wasn’t a legit HR. I think he was pissed he didn’t get enough, and then he did.

  22. 70: Alright, I’ll drop it for now. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of opportunities to bring this kind of thing up in the future. ;-)

    GO PADRES!!!

  23. I love Kouz’s slide. Probably unnecessary, but better safe than sorry.

Glad to see the Padres playing well thus far. We need to keep this up.

  24. Ouch, NOG got PH by Silent L. Man, what’s Pepe thinking with leads? We need the defense now.

  25. 74: Marcus could be hurt? I hope not…

But yeah, NOG should be playing D, not Geoff “I can’t field an IF” Blum.

  26. 61. Quis is terrible…. when Matty V. isn’t on the screen during the pre-game, I know it’s a “radio night”.

  27. Re: 66

Maybe we could use some more fire…I like the display of energy and heart this time of the season. When was the last time we had a team that showed any kind of passion? We don’t even have any cool HR dugout celebrations!

  28. Personally, I have absolutely no problem with Milton slamming the bat down. (if he did it out of victory, not frustration) It’s been a “chippy” game (to use a hockey term) and both teams are fired up…

I think it worst, and shows up the other team a lot more if you sit in the box to watch the home run (see Bonds, Barry) or do a ballerina twirl (see Soriano, Alfonso) than if you slam the bat a you’re running to first.

  29. re:66 I kinda liked the fire as welll…he would be the one guy that would scare the hell out of me if there was ever a bench clearing brawl. But he’s also an emotional leader of the team and we need that kindof fire in my opinion.

As for Blum for NOG…think it could be that we’re up 5 and BB is taking NOG out to avoid any kind of flare up between him and the Phillies? It looked like NOG and the catcher were going to get into it when he came up after the incident in the field…

  30. Bahhhhh… it was totally a bad call on my part. Last time I make comments based on things seen from across the room.

  31. 80: We still love you Steve!

  32. 79: Good point on the switch. Cool down to get the game in hand.

  33. GLB is reporting a hip pointer.

  34. yeah…that’s a good story…I think it’s to keep things from getting out of hand personally…

  35. You guys remember back when Kouz couldn’t hit to save his life?

    Good times… good times…

  36. Gameday is saying it’s a leg injury. Let’s hope it’s a “leg injury”.

  37. He looked fine running the bases the inning after the “injury”…

  38. wow….who are these guys and what did they do with the Padres who can’t hit?

  39. Your new record won’t stand for long Texas Rangers!

  40. I just opened up the Padres notes from padres.com for today’s game, and this is the second paragraph:

“But the Padres have been hot the entire month of August, hitting .265 (197-for-743) entering Friday night’s game with the Phillies, their best mark in a month this season and the eighth best in the National League in August.”

    When a .265 average is a sign that you’re hot…
But it’s sure looked good during this road trip.

  41. Alright, I’m convinced…

I’m going on mlb.com/shop right now and buying a giant Yankees bucket.

  42. Maddux pitching into the 7th inning? What? Buddy, get him out of there at the first sign of trouble!

  43. 76 pitches and a 7 run lead and the bullpen was used a lot in NY

  44. Any word on Scott Hairston ? Has anyone heard anything about when he might be back ? The Pads are in trouble in the late innings when facing a lefty late in innings, as they don’t currently, outside of NOG/Blum, have someone off the bench that bats from the right hand side. They got lucky last night with Wagner facing Sledge, who looped an opposite field hit on what was sort of an ‘excuse me’ swing but going down the stretch we need to avoid this matchup. For this reason, Brady Clark may be an option to replace Sledge.

  45. He was at 69 pitches and it’s with a 7 run lead, so I’m ok with letting Maddux attack the seventh.

  46. 94: I think Ensberg’s still on the bench, though he must be hurt if he wasn’t used last night against Wagner. In today’s notes on padres.com they mention Hairston’s probably not going to be ready to come off the DL tomorrow when he’s eligible. It sounds like he’s somewhat close, but it might be another week.

  47. #94 – Of course, brain cramp….I forgot about Ensberg. I would be surprised if Morgan didn’t get a start on Sunday, just to keep him somewhat tuned.

I would imagine a Lake Elsinore/Portland assignment for Hairston is in the works …if we add him to the roster in mid -September then I think he will be eligible for the post season because he was injured before the deadline.

  48. You cannot stop Kouz, you can only hope to contain him by hitting him with a pitch to hold him to one base.

  49. Bard is REDHOT right now. Just in the nick of time !

  50. Alright Geoff, ground into a double play here to finish this game a little quicker so I can go waste my time doing something else for the rest of the night.
