September 3, 1969, San Diego: Phillies 9, Padres 1 (box score) Ugly, ugly loss. Did I say ugly? The Padres scored only once. In the seventh inning, with left-hander Woodie Fryman on the mound for the visitors, San Diego parlayed an Ivan Murrell single and two Phillies errors into a run. That made the score 9-1. The rest? You don't want to know, but I'll tell you anyway. Al Santorini made the start for San Diego. Allowed single runs in the first, second, and fifth innings, and four more in the sixth. You want details. Okay, then; Deron Johnson, Ron Stone, and Don Money each collected three hits. Johnny Callison drove ...

September 2, 1969, San Diego: Phillies 2, Padres 0 (box score) In the second of a three-game series, the Padres and Phillies hooked up in serious a pitchers duel. Tommie Sisk, who entered with an 0-9 record and a 5.83 ERA, started for San Diego; the visitors countered with rookie right-hander Bill Champion. Through five innings, neither team had scored. In fact, there had been only three hits total to that point. Johnny Briggs led off the sixth for Philadelphia with a bunt single to third. After another bunt advanced Briggs to second base, Dick Allen singled him home to make the score 1-0. The Phillies added another run in ...

1969: Padres Start September with a Win

September 1, 1969, San Diego: Padres 5, Phillies 2 (box score) After suffering through a miserable 5-22 August, the Padres opened September at home against Philadelphia. Left-hander Grant Jackson started for the visitors and failed to record a single out. Jose Arcia led off the first inning with an infield single. Roberto Pena singled to center, and Ivan Murrell tripled both of them home. A balk by Jackson plated Murrell, making the score 3-0. After Nate Colbert walked, right-hander John Boozer replaced Jackson and retired the Padres without further incident. San Diego added two runs in the fourth. Colbert drew his second walk of the game, and Ed Spiezio ...

How the (NL) West Will Be Won

Fun weekend in Philadelphia. Fun road trip. Four out of six against two playoff contenders back east? Works for me. Now the boys return to Petco for a huge four-game series against Arizona. We can whine about the fact that the Diamondbacks are outperforming their Pythagorean record by 12 games or we can acknowledge the impressiveness of this freakish achievement and start focusing on things we can control, like winning games here and now. I respect what the Diamondbacks are doing. They are challenging our assumptions about the relationship between runs and wins. They are forcing intelligent people to work overtime trying to figure out what makes them tick. How can that not be good for the game? What amazes me about the Snakes is that they have ...

Game #129 time:10:35 a.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Tim Stauffer (0-0, 17.18) vs Kyle Kendrick (6-3, 4.06) pre:Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com Four things: Glad to see Doug Brocail take care of business with Carlos Ruiz. Plunking the punk in the hip won't hasten Marcus Giles' return from the DL, but it's good to know that guys have each other's backs. And Ruiz is still an idiot. Craig Stansberry, recalled from Triple-A Portland, whacked the first pitch he saw in the big leagues just over the outstretched glove of Philadelphia second baseman Tadahito Iguchi for a single. Stansberry was batting for Rob Mackowiak, who had been announced for Brocail but who was lifted ...

Game #128 time:4:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Clay Hensley (2-3, 6.70) vs Kyle Lohse (7-12, 4.61) pre:Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com Three things: Carlos Ruiz is an idiot. Thanks for lighting a fire under the team's collective posterior. Here's hoping Marcus Giles is okay. Great response by the Padres. Embarrassing the opposition in its home park with a 14-3 whooping is sweet revenge. What did we ever do without Milton Bradley? The Padres score ...

Game #127 time:4:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (9-9, 3.90) vs Jamie Moyer (11-6, 4.12) pre:Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer both made their big-league debuts in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs. Moyer's first game came on June 16. He beat Steve Carlton and the Phillies, 7-5, at Wrigley Field. The first batter Moyer faced, ex-Padre Ron Roenicke, doubled but was left stranded when Mike Schmidt rapped into a 5-4-3 double play started by Davey Lopes. Ryne Sandberg and Gary Matthews each collected two hits in support of Moyer, as did ex-Padres Keith Moreland (technically he ...
