Game #160 time:5:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (13-11, 4.10) vs Chris Capuano (5-12, 5.09) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com This talk of tiebreakers makes my head hurt. Win three and the rest will take care of itself. Here's the plan: On offense, hit the ball toward Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. On defense, keep the ball away from those two. Also, say nice things about Chris Capuano; then he can't hurt you. Go Padres!

I love a pennant race. We made it out to all four games against the Pirates this week -- even got to sit in Toyota Terrace on Thursday. I try to do that once a year because they keep all the riff-raff out of that level. Hey, wait, I'm the riff-raff. Anyway, the Padres are a half game back with 10 to go. They need to win half of those to finish with 90 wins for the fourth time in franchise history. But you know what? I'm a greedy SOB, and I want 'em all. Finish the season on a 17-game winning streak. Actually, make that a 28-game streak. While we're all waiting for Hades to cool off just a tad, here is an extra large helping ...

Game #145 time:7:10 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (12-9, 3.68) vs David Wells (7-8, 5.31) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com From The Scouting Report: 1990 (aff link): Finding a weakness in Greg Maddux is difficult. Whether he is at home or on the road, on turf or natural grass, during the day or at night, his numbers are all excellent. Though Maddux is not yet 24, he pitches like a 10-year veteran. Maddux had just come off a 19-win season. His career record stood at 45-38, with a 3.77 ERA In a crowded Blue Jay bullpen, David Wells hasn't really had a chance to show his true potential. Certainly Wells ...

Game #141 time:5:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (11-9, 3.75) vs Jeff Francis (15-6, 4.12) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com Jeff Francis has been terrific again this year, proving that his 2006 breakout season was no fluke. On the bright side, he's been terrible against the Padres of late. Francis has allowed at least five runs in each of his last five starts against San Diego. He's 1-3 with a 9.91 ERA during that stretch, which dates back to August 2006. The bad news, of course, is that past performance is no guarantee of future performance. Here's hoping that in this case, the trend continues...

Game #137 time:1:40 p.m. PT tv:none sp:Greg Maddux (10-9, 3.79) vs Micah Owings (6-7, 4.51) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com Happy Labor Day, folks. The Padres and Diamondbacks enter their three-game series separated by mere percentage points at the top of the National League West with fewer than 30 games remaining. Could it get any better? Well, yeah. The game could be televised. Hello!
