IGD: Padres @ Phillies (24 Aug 07)

Game #127
time: 4:05 p.m. PT
tv: 4SD
sp: Greg Maddux (9-9, 3.90) vs Jamie Moyer (11-6, 4.12)
pre: Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com

Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer both made their big-league debuts in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs. Moyer’s first game came on June 16. He beat Steve Carlton and the Phillies, 7-5, at Wrigley Field. The first batter Moyer faced, ex-Padre Ron Roenicke, doubled but was left stranded when Mike Schmidt rapped into a 5-4-3 double play started by Davey Lopes.

Ryne Sandberg and Gary Matthews each collected two hits in support of Moyer, as did ex-Padres Keith Moreland (technically he was still a future Padre at this point) and Jerry Mumphrey. Leon Durham hit a two-run homer and Lee Smith collected the 122nd save of his career.

Maddux got the call 2 1/2 months later, taking the loss in a September 2 game started by Moyer. Maddux served up a solo homer to Billy Hatcher (traded by the Cubs in December 1985 to Houston for the aforementioned Mumphrey) with one out in the 18th inning that gave the Astros an 8-7 victory. Nolan Ryan had gotten the start opposite Moyer.

Others who played on the ’86 Cubs include Shawon Dunston, Chris Speier (Justin’s dad), Terry Francona, Rafael Palmeiro, Dennis Eckersley, Rick Sutcliffe, and Ed Lynch (former Cubs GM). Ronald Reagan was president and the Soviet Union still existed, as did the Berlin Wall.

The #1 song of the year according to Billboard was the dreadful Burt Bacharach offering “That’s What Friends Are For” (Burt has done some fine work, but this is not an example of it). The top television show was “The Cosby Show” and the #1 movie in America was “Top Gun” (followed closely by “Crocodile Dundee”).

You understand, right? If you’re nodding your head, then you’re old like me. Oh well, at least I have time for a quick nap before “Murder, She Wrote” starts…

  1. Wow… So Moyer and Maddux started pitching when I was 3. That’s pretty crazy when I think about it that way!

  2. I was 4 when Maddux and Moyer got the call.

  3. Great start. Great start.

    I like.

  4. Who are you people and what have you done to our offense?

  5. As the weather gets hotter Adrian gets hot and gets his stroke back. That was a bomb, 2-0 Pads

  6. Damn Milton almost had that

  7. Maddux is having his first inning troubles

  8. How much of that was Maddux getting hit hard and how much of it was fly balls finding holes?

  9. 7: Those were pretty softly hit balls for the most part. Just unlucky.

Hopefully the Pads can continue to swing the bats and we’ll end up on the right side of this thing.

  10. 8: Mostly finding holes, they werent raking him, but they werent all luck pretty solid hits.

Kouz rips it down the line and Burrell almost throws him out at 2nd.

  11. All right, so does NOG GIDP to effectively kill the inning of any big threat but score the run, or does he keep the possibility of a big inning alive but not score the run by striking out or popping out?

  12. We are hitting the ball hard, offense looks good. Anything but a GIDP would be great Marcus

  13. now would be a good time to squeeze…

  14. Damnit Marcus: You’ve got to get that ball deeper.

  15. 11: The second part… a little pop up, waste of an out.

  16. Apparently the second one. Well done.

  17. 16: I would had rather seen a run come in, with the pitcher up next you gotta get that run in

  18. Mets up 1-0 on Dogs in 1st …

  19. Come on, Maddux, Squeeze!

  20. Marcus Giles plate discipline is completely gone. Popping out is better than hitting in a double play but at least he could swing at a strike.

  21. Mad Dog is making him work

  22. After 1 …

    Pitches-strikes – G Maddux 14-13; J Moyer 14-8.

    Ground balls-fly balls – G Maddux 2-1; J Moyer 2-1.

    Batters faced – G Maddux 6; J Moyer 5.

  23. Maddux showing the team how to get the pitch count up….

  24. Crap…

  25. Maddux grounding into a double play, now that was a shocker!

  26. 20: At least the DP scores a run, instead he sets it up for Maddux to hit into one and we score nothing.

  27. Ahh, the Padres we know an dlove have come back to us.

  28. 21 … and then wastes the effort by not K’ing and giving OG a chance at an RBI …

  29. As well as Maddux can handle the bat, he doesnt hit like he used to. Thats an AB where he should just strike out and give B. Giles a chance with 2 outs.

  30. The Phil broadcasters said our lineup was hitting .200 career against Moyer going into the game. Good to see every hit has been hit hard

  31. Thru 2 …

    Pitches-strikes – G Maddux 25-21; J Moyer 31-20.

    Ground balls-fly balls – G Maddux 4-2; J Moyer 4-2.

    Batters faced – G Maddux 10; J Moyer 9.

  32. Nice DP by Iguchi, i thought that was a base hit for sure.

  33. Wow, YAGIDP …

  34. Could we get any worse luck in this game? Jesus Christ man.

  35. Good sequence there. Bradley walks on four pitches, Adrian grounds into a double play on the first pitch he saw.

  36. Look at the bright side, at least by hitting into double plays they are keeping their runners left on base low!

  37. 36: To Adrian’s credit, he it the ball hard and it was a good pitch to hit. looked like a base hit off the bat.

  38. Suppose Greg will repeat his “I’m really sucking today, so it would help if I don’t have to throw four strikes to get a guy out” line? The second pitch is almost a replica of the first.

  39. Wow, was Khalil’s shot high or just almost out?

Let’s go, Shakespeare. Get the hit.

  40. 3rd freakin DP. Jesus guys.

  41. All right, time to start sacrifice bunting whenever we have a runner on first and one or no outs.

  42. Urgh. That’s 3rd GiDP of the day. Drat!

  43. 40: More of a medium high liner that kept carrying. Victorino was about to the track when he caught it and about 15 feet from the RF foul line.

  44. Yeah, that was not a clean take-out slide. That was a chicken shit play.

  45. Who tries to injure Marcus Giles? I would think you would want him in the game. Sweet interference call which makes it a dead ball play and the runner has to go back to third. Pitcher up next so they might get out of this with no runs.

  46. Phillies announcers are saying it was a good slide. Jerks.

  47. 48: Which Phillies announcers? Is it Harry Kalas? I hope it’s not him; I really like his announcing.

  48. 48: It’s Gary Matthews, who is an ass. I can’t believe they’re defending the slide. Ludicrous.

The Pads need this momentum to come back and whoop some Philly ass.

Do you think Marcus or Ruiz gets plunked later in this series?
