Padres vs Phillies 5:05 p.m. PT ESPN AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 187 MLB, B-R I'll bet ESPN is psyched to be broadcasting a Padres game in August this year, eh? Still, it's an excuse to visit San Diego...

Falling Off the Bandwagon

We are all products of our environment. The recent environment in San Diego baseball has been one of winning. Since moving downtown for the 2004 season, the Padres have seen unprecedented on-field success. For the first time in franchise history they've enjoyed four straight winning seasons. In 2005 and 2006, they reached the post-season in back-to-back seasons, another first. And as fans in these parts are all too aware, they came within a strike of making it three straight. Through Monday, the Padres have won 360 games since 2004. That's more wins than all but three teams in the National League (Cardinals, 389; Phillies, 369; Braves, 368) over the same period. Only the Padres and Phillies have posted winning records in each of the past four ...

Series Preview: Mac Thomason Talks Braves

The Padres continue their East Coast swing with three in Atlanta starting Tuesday evening. To learn more about the 2008 Braves, I checked in with Mac Thomason, of the venerable and most excellent blog Braves Journal. Ducksnorts: The NL East looks to be tight again this year. How do you like the Braves' chances? Thomason: I'd like it better if I was confident in John Smoltz's shoulder or Rafael Soriano's elbow. The Braves are going to score some runs; they're outscoring the Phillies this year even with the Phillies' park advantage. But right now the starting pitching is a huge mess (I realize that the Braves have been better at preventing runs than scoring them so far, but looking at ...

Padres (11-17) @ Phillies (15-13) Randy Wolf vs Adam Eaton 4:05 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 185 MLB, B-R Do you suppose Eaton misses San Diego? I'm thinking maybe he does. Let's take a closer look at everyone's favorite perpetual breakout candidate: Adam Eaton, with or without the Padres  GIP/GERAH/9HR/9BB/9SO/9 Statistics are courtesy of David Pinto's Day-by-Day Database. with Padres1335.984.348.901.143.187.04 with other teams485.315.8610.551.523.745.54 Once upon a time, I liked Eaton as much as I liked Jake Peavy. Winning Is Better Than Knitting

Thursday, May 1, 2008

Winning is so much more fun than losing, n'est ce pas? Every starter except Jim Edmonds and Chris Young collected at least one hit on Wednesday in the Padres' 4-2 victory over Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park. Tadahito Iguchi broke out of a season-long slump with four hits, while Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff each homered. (The Padres, who allegedly can't hit, have outhomered the Phillies, 4-1, in the first two games of the series.) Young looked solid for the most part. He gave up a two-run bomb to Chase Utley in the first, but if Utley isn't the hottest hitter on the planet ...
