Jake Peavy‘s next strikeout will move him past Andy Benes and into first place all time among Padres pitchers. Peavy has recorded at least one strikeout in all but one — June 22, 2003, against Seattle — of his 164 career starts, so that’s almost guaranteed to happen. In fact, if Chris Young leads off (as he has 68 times this year), Peavy could set the mark real early in the game.

I’m new boys….but I love the Padres………. and Blummer ain’t my favorite. Just felt it.
Amazing how Hernandez gets four strikes when not one of the seven pitches to Mackowiak was in the zone.
Granted only one of them was called, but that has to be because Welke has been calling them wide all night long and guys know they have to swing.
I have figured it out. Blum is clutch, as clutch as any player in the majors. But he is terrible in all the regular situations, which are a lot more often.
I don’t know if anyone is “watching” on Gameday, but Welke’s “strikezone” is almost 1997 again. Sometimes Livan and Glavine remind me of NFL cornerbacks or NBA teams that hand check or hold on every play, knowing that refs/umpires won’t call fouls/penalties on every play. In this case, the ump wouldn’t call the real plate all night because of catcher location and Livan just only pitching outside.
Oside, first: Welcome to the blog. Second, Blum got the nickname ‘Silent L’ early in the season. He’s just ramped up the second half, go figure.

Personally I’d rather see a large strikezone although more up and down than side to side. It seemed like tonight Welke’s strikezone was moved six inches to the outside for the batters. 6 inches off the plate on the outside, strike. Six inches over the plate on the inside, ball. That pitch from Cruz to Giles seemed to be good but he called it a ball. But at least he’s consistent.
Stu, I was thinking the same thing. But I’m awfully glad we acquired Bradley. it’s not often a contender trades a minor league reliever in mid-season for a guy who immediately becomes their best player.

73 & 77 – I hear both of you. I’ll give the edge to Bradley over Cust, but Cust hit a ton for the A’s earlier this year. And don’t get me wrong – I love having Bradley on the Padres. He hits (duh) and brings a competitive edge that very few Padres have ever exhibited.
