Game #139 time:6:40 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Jake Peavy (16-5, 2.10) vs Livan Hernandez (9-9, 4.67) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com I've just picked up the new Jason Falkner CD, I'm OK You're OK (aff link), and as usual, listening to Falkner is a very humbling experience. Way too much talent for one person. Speaking of which, Jake Peavy gets the call on three days rest in the finale at Arizona Wednesday night. Peavy lobbied to have his turn pushed up a day, giving us all a good excuse to ...

Game #138 time:6:40 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Chris Young (9-5, 2.38) vs Doug Davis (12-11, 4.09) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com As noted in Tuesday morning's comments, the Padres have signed journeyman right-hander Brett Tomko for the stretch run. Tomko, a mainstay in the Padres rotation back in 2002, was a second-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in 1995. He and Jarrod Washburn were the best pitchers taken that round, which is damning with faint praise. Tomko also rejoins Mike Cameron, with whom he once was traded for Ken Griffey Jr. Eh, there's more, but even I've lost interest...

Learning to Drive

Hard to offer meaningful commentary on a game that wasn't televised. I assume from the 10 runs and five homers that the offense performed well. Either that or Micah Owings pitched like... well, you get the idea. Padres at Ballhype As you know, I've been doing some work with Ballhype of late. Just wanted to give everyone the heads-up on something that I should have pimped a long time ago: a group for Padres fans. This is one more way to connect with folks who dig the Friars as much as we do. Give it a spin if you're so inclined... It seems weird that a guy with 10 home runs this late in the season could have three multiple-homer games, but that's ...

Game #137 time:1:40 p.m. PT tv:none sp:Greg Maddux (10-9, 3.79) vs Micah Owings (6-7, 4.51) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com Happy Labor Day, folks. The Padres and Diamondbacks enter their three-game series separated by mere percentage points at the top of the National League West with fewer than 30 games remaining. Could it get any better? Well, yeah. The game could be televised. Hello!

Game #132 time:7:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Chris Young (9-4, 2.12) vs Doug Davis (11-11, 4.09) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com How sweet would a sweep be? Pretty sweet. Also, is it just me or is anyone else offended by the fact that the pitcher with the best ERA in the league (Chris Young) has the same number of wins as the pitcher with the worst ERA in the league (Adam Eaton, 9-8, 6.23)?

Tied for First

The Padres are tied for first again after Wednesday night's 3-1 victory over Arizona at Petco Park (box score). That's nice, but let's not get carried away just yet. Not to bring everyone down, but being in first place on August 30 isn't the goal, it's just a signpost along the highway. The Padres have 30 games remaining on the schedule, and if the fact that they've picked up 5 games in the standings over the past 11 games doesn't convince you that anything can happen, then I don't know what will. Back to Wednesday, Greg Maddux gave another solid performance. He got himself into trouble a ...

Game #132 time:7:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (10-9, 3.90) vs Micah Owings (6-7, 4.69) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com Greg Maddux hasn't issued a walk all month. He's issued just three over 210 plate appearances since the All-Star break. Two of those came in the same game. Maddux has walked zero or one batters in 22 of his 27 starts this year. In 1997, he did that in 28 of 32 starts. Maddux is averaging 1.17 walks per nine innings, best in baseball, and he's already walked more batters than he did in 71 more innings in '97. It's sick, is what it is. So is the fact that Micah Owings has outhomered ex-Padre Josh Barfield ...
