Game #139 time:6:40 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Jake Peavy (16-5, 2.10) vs Livan Hernandez (9-9, 4.67) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com I've just picked up the new Jason Falkner CD, I'm OK You're OK (aff link), and as usual, listening to Falkner is a very humbling experience. Way too much talent for one person. Speaking of which, Jake Peavy gets the call on three days rest in the finale at Arizona Wednesday night. Peavy lobbied to have his turn pushed up a day, giving us all a good excuse to ...

Game #130 time:7:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Jake Peavy (14-5, 2.21) vs Livan Hernandez (9-8, 4.96) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com Jake Peavy's next strikeout will move him past Andy Benes and into first place all time among Padres pitchers. Peavy has recorded at least one strikeout in all but one -- June 22, 2003, against Seattle -- of his 164 career starts, so that's almost guaranteed to happen. In fact, if Chris Young leads off (as he has 68 times this year), Peavy could set the mark real early in the game. Records are nice, but wins are ...

Game #89 time:6:40 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Chris Young (8-3, 2.00) vs Livan Hernandez (5-5, 4.54) pre:Padres.com, SI.com I can't stand watching Livan Hernandez pitch, but I have tremendous admiration for the guy. He has successfully taken Muhammad Ali's rope-a-dope strategy and applied it to baseball. The results may be "aesthetically challenged," but in the end, Hernandez has assembled a nice little career. Chris Young, meanwhile, gets to pitch in a real game again, which hopefully means no more cheap-ass home runs. Go Padres!

When Is Zero Greater Than Sixteen?

The story was supposed to be Jake Peavy's 16 strikeouts and complete dominance. The story was supposed to be Terrmel Sledge's opposite field home run off sinkerballer Brandon Webb. The story was supposed to be anything but what it became. It's a credit to the Padres' bullpen that a two-run lead headed to the eighth is considered a victory. Wednesday night provided a shocking reminder that this isn't always the case. The fact that it came at the hands of Stephen "I Shoulda Been a Padre" Drew adds to the sting, but honestly, it's nothing personal; a loss is a loss no matter how you slice it. Peavy pitched the game of his life and gets nothing. Sorry, folks, I'm too disgusted to offer any ...

After a much-needed off day on Monday, the Padres head to Phoenix for a midweek series. We'll see three potentially excellent pitching matchups: David Wells vs Randy Johnson on Tuesday, Jake Peavy vs Brandon Webb on Wednesday, and Chris Young vs Livan Hernandez on Thursday. Speaking of pitchers, the Padres are back down to a 12-man staff. Right-hander Aaron Rakers has been returned to Triple-A Portland, with infielder Oscar Robles replacing him on the big-league roster. Robles doesn't have much of a track record, but he impressed me during spring training with his bat control. Still, he essentially duplicates the skill set of Geoff Blum. Also, Robles is a left-handed ...

first pitch: 12:35 p.m. PT television: none matchup: Jake Peavy (2-0, 0.90 ERA) vs Livan Hernandez (1-0, 1.80 ERA) previews: Padres.com | SI.com It's probably too early to call this a trend, but there's reason to be encouraged by Jake Peavy's performance so far in '07. Forget the ERA, and look at pitch efficiency: DateIPTBF#PITP/PAP/IP Apr 3623984.2616.3 Apr 87281033.6814.7 Apr 147261003.8514.3 Again, who knows whether Peavy will be able to sustain lower pitch counts over the course of a full season. Wouldn't it be nice if he could?
