| sp: | Jake Peavy (14-5, 2.21) vs Livan Hernandez (9-8, 4.96) |
| pre: | Padres.com, B-R.com |
Jake Peavy’s next strikeout will move him past Andy Benes and into first place all time among Padres pitchers. Peavy has recorded at least one strikeout in all but one — June 22, 2003, against Seattle — of his 164 career starts, so that’s almost guaranteed to happen. In fact, if Chris Young leads off (as he has 68 times this year), Peavy could set the mark real early in the game.
Records are nice, but wins are even better. Go Padres!

The D-backs lead-off hitter’s OBP = .288 … hmmm ….
Get ‘em here Jake! Greak the record!
Jake!!! All-time Padre strike out leader!
Beautiful K to set the record!
And there it is! Congratulations to Jake Peavy.
Did he keep the ball?
6: Yup. He immediately tossed it to the dugout.
7: Unlike when he got his 1,000 K and stood on the mound trying to make the next pitch while wondering why everyone in the stands was standing up and clapping.
Swing and miss on 83 MPH fastball=not cool
9: I really dislike Adrian’s swings on 2-strike pitches. He seems to chase some terrible pitches then, and when he’s ahead in the count (see the 3-1 pitch)
Nice work Jake. Too many pitches, but way to hump up.
Is it just me or is it a little quiet around here for such a big game? Maybe I’m just antsy cause Im at work and its pretty slow. Who would have thought workin at ESPN would allow so much downtime?
12 – it’s Monday. quiet night so far
Jake has the good stuff tonight. 4 Ks in a row.
Jake is on fire tonight!
Just sitting down to watch the game and see Peev is kicking arse……………….go padres.
Jake wants this one…lets see if the rest of the team can get with the program
Jake with a nice 5.5 single.
W…T…F…
That double play was no bueno. Jake is making up for it on the mound. Six Ks in a row…
Wow. Seven straight. This is getting interesting.
Just four more to go Jake!
Where did that miss?
Jake just needs to get out of this inning now. He needs to throw less pitches.
Peavy through 4: 70 pitches, 46 strikes, 24 balls, 8 Ks. If he can get through seven, I’ll take it.
I love the K’s, but Hernandez has a third fewer pitches. We need to make them burn their bullpen early in the series.
Helluva catch by Byrnes. What else can you say?
27: That he’s an ass.
#28: Your right, he’s an ass.
I detest Eric Byrnes. It’s bad enough that I have to listen to him on XX as Too Much Idiots suck up to him, it’s another to watch him single handedly win this game for the D-Backs.
30: Yup, he robs Khalil of a sure double and then promptly puts one in the seats. We have GOT to pick up Jake.
The good news is the D-Backs are overpaying for his career year.
C’mon boys!
Let’s go Milty!
Here we go Jenga….
Come on Livan. Adrian will make you pay if you walk Jenga….
Mr Welke appears to be rather generous on the outside corner…. Was Jake getting those?
I can’t remember seeing a catcher as active as Montero has been this inning.
Damn. This team can look so completely incompetent against below average pitching. I cannot believe Peavy’s performance is going to be wasted.
Why does it seem like every crappy pitcher comes into Petco and shuts them down? Of course if they can’t get any runs off Kyle Kendrick in Philly I guess it’s a bit much to expect them to score a run in Petco no matter who the pitcher is. If they lose this game with the D-backs starting a one decent and the rest scrubs lineups — not good.
37 Answering my own question: Yes….
Every batter should bunt. Every one. Until they can hit.
Not a good day when your pitcher has 40% of your hits two thirds of the way through the game…
#40
It’s Petco and Livan is a righthanded Boomer.
Ok, Blum. Seven is half of fourteen, so just imagine it’s a bit later then it really is…
Here we go! Blast it Blum.
Is anyone listening to Vasgersian try to explain the D-backs record despite their negative run differential? He is saying that you can’t use their run difference since their bullpen is so good and that they only use their “good” pitchers in close games and their terrible pitchers in blowouts, therefore they win a bunch of one run games and get blown out with they lose. But isn’t that true for every team? What team uses bad pitchers in close games? Well, maybe the Phillies but who else? I think I saw the same argument in BP.com (in fact probably so did Matt since he was just quoting it) but I don’t think that it makes any sense since every team is probably like this.
Told you so…..I CALLED IT.
Good call Sean and Oside Jon.
Thank you, Sean.
Silent L comes through with a right center long ball!!!
I think Blum has his get out of jail card for another couple of weeks…
NO F’NG WAY!!!!
Silent Hell hit one out.

Dear Silent L:
I apologize forever.
Thx,
Robby
Attaboy Blum!
Now, Padres Bullpen, show the D’Backs that the hometown pen is still the best.
That was AWESOME!!!!
I’m new boys….but I love the Padres………. and Blummer ain’t my favorite. Just felt it.
Amazing how Hernandez gets four strikes when not one of the seven pitches to Mackowiak was in the zone.
Granted only one of them was called, but that has to be because Welke has been calling them wide all night long and guys know they have to swing.
I have figured it out. Blum is clutch, as clutch as any player in the majors. But he is terrible in all the regular situations, which are a lot more often.
I don’t know if anyone is “watching” on Gameday, but Welke’s “strikezone” is almost 1997 again. Sometimes Livan and Glavine remind me of NFL cornerbacks or NBA teams that hand check or hold on every play, knowing that refs/umpires won’t call fouls/penalties on every play. In this case, the ump wouldn’t call the real plate all night because of catcher location and Livan just only pitching outside.
Oside, first: Welcome to the blog. Second, Blum got the nickname ‘Silent L’ early in the season. He’s just ramped up the second half, go figure.
Heath Bell with a sweet 8th. Love how outstanding he’s been as another power arm in the ‘pen this year.
Looking at Bell’s called strikes on Hudson, does Welke think the strikezone is supposed to be as wide as the player’s knees to armpits and only as tall as the plate?
#61: Kevin, I think you nailed it.
JENGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice call by the umps. HOME. RUN.
JENGA
Ahhh…breathing room
I hated him as a Dodger… I love him as a Friar. I admit it.
Good call by the umpires. Milty didn’t even know.
OK, anyone else watching Channel 4, and yelling “Jack Cust” at Matty V? You know what I mean?
Ring the bells, baby.
This just in. The General is a good hitter.
DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!
(Sorry I was a little late…)
73: Bradley plays in the field. Cust does not. Bradley > Cust.
Personally I’d rather see a large strikezone although more up and down than side to side. It seemed like tonight Welke’s strikezone was moved six inches to the outside for the batters. 6 inches off the plate on the outside, strike. Six inches over the plate on the inside, ball. That pitch from Cruz to Giles seemed to be good but he called it a ball. But at least he’s consistent.
Stu, I was thinking the same thing. But I’m awfully glad we acquired Bradley. it’s not often a contender trades a minor league reliever in mid-season for a guy who immediately becomes their best player.
Nice pitch, Trevor.
Close it out for Peavy –Senior Hoffman.
Can of corn for #2
Not to usurp another, but…
death
taxes
OK, one more, Trev…
YES
Thank God! This series is going to give me an ulcer.
Ring the Bell, game over, the Paaadddrressss win
“Sometimes, fake is better.”
LOL
87: you and me both brother
87 & 90
you still have un-ulcered guts after that Mets series?
I’m envious over here….
Wow. Bob Melvin is a moron. Why was Clark sitting on the bench? Trevor was leaving pitches up in the zone yet again, and how many times has Clark beaten us in the past? What a bonehead.
It used to be I could give a sigh of relief when Trevor came in. now I tend to hold my breath. Nice win tonight.
73 & 77 – I hear both of you. I’ll give the edge to Bradley over Cust, but Cust hit a ton for the A’s earlier this year. And don’t get me wrong – I love having Bradley on the Padres. He hits (duh) and brings a competitive edge that very few Padres have ever exhibited.
This series is gonna be good.
94 – d’oh, make that 77 and 79. gotta observe good commenting etiquette.
Rich – haha
Peavy was vintage 1998 Kevin Brown, pitching and hitting.
Check the stats Padre fans, the only thing stopping Jake Peavy leading the NL in ERA, Wins AND K’s is Chris Young’s 2.12 ERA. Life is not so bad…
Now just remember to chant “Pythagoras” 10 times before bed each night, and everything will be ok…
Whew. We definitely needed that one. Now let’s go out tomorrow and knock around Webb to cement Peavy as the front-runner for the Cy Young.
#99: It would be nice if they bake Webb to get Jake on the way to the CYA. He well deserves it, no doubt.
A Padre should have got it last year. I’m biased, I know… but I like that idea as motivation. It worked on September 30, 2006…
What a fun game. Very satisfying victory. Here are two shots from Section 300:

First is Jake delivering the pitch that would push him past Andy Benes and into first place all-time on the Padres strikeout list.
Second is, well, pretty self-explanatory…
