IGD: Padres vs Diamondbacks (27 Aug 07)

Game #130
time: 7:05 p.m. PT
tv: 4SD
sp: Jake Peavy (14-5, 2.21) vs Livan Hernandez (9-8, 4.96)
pre: Padres.com, B-R.com

Jake Peavy’s next strikeout will move him past Andy Benes and into first place all time among Padres pitchers. Peavy has recorded at least one strikeout in all but one — June 22, 2003, against Seattle — of his 164 career starts, so that’s almost guaranteed to happen. In fact, if Chris Young leads off (as he has 68 times this year), Peavy could set the mark real early in the game.

Records are nice, but wins are even better. Go Padres!

Why does it seem like every crappy pitcher comes into Petco and shuts them down? Of course if they can’t get any runs off Kyle Kendrick in Philly I guess it’s a bit much to expect them to score a run in Petco no matter who the pitcher is. If they lose this game with the D-backs starting a one decent and the rest scrubs lineups — not good.

Is anyone listening to Vasgersian try to explain the D-backs record despite their negative run differential? He is saying that you can’t use their run difference since their bullpen is so good and that they only use their “good” pitchers in close games and their terrible pitchers in blowouts, therefore they win a bunch of one run games and get blown out with they lose. But isn’t that true for every team? What team uses bad pitchers in close games? Well, maybe the Phillies but who else? I think I saw the same argument in BP.com (in fact probably so did Matt since he was just quoting it) but I don’t think that it makes any sense since every team is probably like this.

Amazing how Hernandez gets four strikes when not one of the seven pitches to Mackowiak was in the zone.

Granted only one of them was called, but that has to be because Welke has been calling them wide all night long and guys know they have to swing.

  61. Posted August 27, 2007 at 9:12 pm | Permalink

I have figured it out. Blum is clutch, as clutch as any player in the majors. But he is terrible in all the regular situations, which are a lot more often.

  62. The Other Keach
    Posted August 27, 2007 at 9:13 pm | Permalink

I don’t know if anyone is “watching” on Gameday, but Welke’s “strikezone” is almost 1997 again. Sometimes Livan and Glavine remind me of NFL cornerbacks or NBA teams that hand check or hold on every play, knowing that refs/umpires won’t call fouls/penalties on every play. In this case, the ump wouldn’t call the real plate all night because of catcher location and Livan just only pitching outside.

    Posted August 27, 2007 at 9:25 pm | Permalink

Personally I’d rather see a large strikezone although more up and down than side to side. It seemed like tonight Welke’s strikezone was moved six inches to the outside for the batters. 6 inches off the plate on the outside, strike. Six inches over the plate on the inside, ball. That pitch from Cruz to Giles seemed to be good but he called it a ball. But at least he’s consistent.

Stu, I was thinking the same thing. But I’m awfully glad we acquired Bradley. it’s not often a contender trades a minor league reliever in mid-season for a guy who immediately becomes their best player.
