IGD: Padres vs Diamondbacks (27 Aug 07)
Mon, Aug 27, 2007by Geoff Young
| time: | 7:05 p.m. PT |
| tv: | 4SD |
| sp: | Jake Peavy (14-5, 2.21) vs Livan Hernandez (9-8, 4.96) |
| pre: | Padres.com, B-R.com |
Jake Peavy’s next strikeout will move him past Andy Benes and into first place all time among Padres pitchers. Peavy has recorded at least one strikeout in all but one — June 22, 2003, against Seattle — of his 164 career starts, so that’s almost guaranteed to happen. In fact, if Chris Young leads off (as he has 68 times this year), Peavy could set the mark real early in the game.
Records are nice, but wins are even better. Go Padres!

The D-backs lead-off hitter’s OBP = .288 … hmmm ….
August 27, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Get ‘em here Jake! Greak the record!
August 27, 2007 at 7:10 pm
Jake!!! All-time Padre strike out leader!
August 27, 2007 at 7:10 pm
Beautiful K to set the record!
August 27, 2007 at 7:10 pm
And there it is! Congratulations to Jake Peavy.
August 27, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Did he keep the ball?
August 27, 2007 at 7:12 pm
6: Yup. He immediately tossed it to the dugout.
August 27, 2007 at 7:17 pm
7: Unlike when he got his 1,000 K and stood on the mound trying to make the next pitch while wondering why everyone in the stands was standing up and clapping.
August 27, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Swing and miss on 83 MPH fastball=not cool
August 27, 2007 at 7:21 pm
9: I really dislike Adrian’s swings on 2-strike pitches. He seems to chase some terrible pitches then, and when he’s ahead in the count (see the 3-1 pitch)
August 27, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Nice work Jake. Too many pitches, but way to hump up.
August 27, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Is it just me or is it a little quiet around here for such a big game? Maybe I’m just antsy cause Im at work and its pretty slow. Who would have thought workin at ESPN would allow so much downtime?
August 27, 2007 at 7:34 pm
12 - it’s Monday. quiet night so far
August 27, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Jake has the good stuff tonight. 4 Ks in a row.
August 27, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Jake is on fire tonight!
August 27, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Just sitting down to watch the game and see Peev is kicking arse……………….go padres.
August 27, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Jake wants this one…lets see if the rest of the team can get with the program
August 27, 2007 at 7:49 pm
Jake with a nice 5.5 single.
August 27, 2007 at 7:52 pm
W…T…F…
August 27, 2007 at 7:57 pm
That double play was no bueno. Jake is making up for it on the mound. Six Ks in a row…
August 27, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Wow. Seven straight. This is getting interesting.
August 27, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Just four more to go Jake!
August 27, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Where did that miss?
August 27, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Jake just needs to get out of this inning now. He needs to throw less pitches.
August 27, 2007 at 8:04 pm
Peavy through 4: 70 pitches, 46 strikes, 24 balls, 8 Ks. If he can get through seven, I’ll take it.
August 27, 2007 at 8:18 pm
I love the K’s, but Hernandez has a third fewer pitches. We need to make them burn their bullpen early in the series.
August 27, 2007 at 8:19 pm
Helluva catch by Byrnes. What else can you say?
August 27, 2007 at 8:24 pm
27: That he’s an ass.
August 27, 2007 at 8:30 pm
#28: Your right, he’s an ass.
August 27, 2007 at 8:32 pm
I detest Eric Byrnes. It’s bad enough that I have to listen to him on XX as Too Much Idiots suck up to him, it’s another to watch him single handedly win this game for the D-Backs.
August 27, 2007 at 8:33 pm
30: Yup, he robs Khalil of a sure double and then promptly puts one in the seats. We have GOT to pick up Jake.
August 27, 2007 at 8:34 pm
The good news is the D-Backs are overpaying for his career year.
August 27, 2007 at 8:39 pm
C’mon boys!
August 27, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Let’s go Milty!
August 27, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Here we go Jenga….
August 27, 2007 at 8:42 pm
Come on Livan. Adrian will make you pay if you walk Jenga….
August 27, 2007 at 8:42 pm
Mr Welke appears to be rather generous on the outside corner…. Was Jake getting those?
August 27, 2007 at 8:45 pm
I can’t remember seeing a catcher as active as Montero has been this inning.
August 27, 2007 at 8:49 pm
Damn. This team can look so completely incompetent against below average pitching. I cannot believe Peavy’s performance is going to be wasted.
August 27, 2007 at 8:49 pm
Why does it seem like every crappy pitcher comes into Petco and shuts them down? Of course if they can’t get any runs off Kyle Kendrick in Philly I guess it’s a bit much to expect them to score a run in Petco no matter who the pitcher is. If they lose this game with the D-backs starting a one decent and the rest scrubs lineups — not good.
August 27, 2007 at 8:50 pm
37 Answering my own question: Yes….
August 27, 2007 at 8:50 pm
Every batter should bunt. Every one. Until they can hit.
August 27, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Not a good day when your pitcher has 40% of your hits two thirds of the way through the game…
August 27, 2007 at 9:00 pm
#40
It’s Petco and Livan is a righthanded Boomer.
August 27, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Ok, Blum. Seven is half of fourteen, so just imagine it’s a bit later then it really is…
August 27, 2007 at 9:02 pm
Here we go! Blast it Blum.
August 27, 2007 at 9:02 pm
Is anyone listening to Vasgersian try to explain the D-backs record despite their negative run differential? He is saying that you can’t use their run difference since their bullpen is so good and that they only use their “good” pitchers in close games and their terrible pitchers in blowouts, therefore they win a bunch of one run games and get blown out with they lose. But isn’t that true for every team? What team uses bad pitchers in close games? Well, maybe the Phillies but who else? I think I saw the same argument in BP.com (in fact probably so did Matt since he was just quoting it) but I don’t think that it makes any sense since every team is probably like this.
August 27, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Told you so…..I CALLED IT.
August 27, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Good call Sean and Oside Jon.
August 27, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Thank you, Sean.
August 27, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Silent L comes through with a right center long ball!!!
August 27, 2007 at 9:04 pm
I think Blum has his get out of jail card for another couple of weeks…
August 27, 2007 at 9:04 pm
NO F’NG WAY!!!!
Silent Hell hit one out.
August 27, 2007 at 9:04 pm
DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!
August 27, 2007 at 9:05 pm
Dear Silent L:
I apologize forever.
Thx,
Robby
August 27, 2007 at 9:05 pm
Attaboy Blum!
August 27, 2007 at 9:06 pm
Now, Padres Bullpen, show the D’Backs that the hometown pen is still the best.
August 27, 2007 at 9:08 pm
That was AWESOME!!!!
August 27, 2007 at 9:08 pm
I’m new boys….but I love the Padres………. and Blummer ain’t my favorite. Just felt it.
August 27, 2007 at 9:09 pm
Amazing how Hernandez gets four strikes when not one of the seven pitches to Mackowiak was in the zone.
Granted only one of them was called, but that has to be because Welke has been calling them wide all night long and guys know they have to swing.
August 27, 2007 at 9:12 pm
I have figured it out. Blum is clutch, as clutch as any player in the majors. But he is terrible in all the regular situations, which are a lot more often.
August 27, 2007 at 9:13 pm
I don’t know if anyone is “watching” on Gameday, but Welke’s “strikezone” is almost 1997 again. Sometimes Livan and Glavine remind me of NFL cornerbacks or NBA teams that hand check or hold on every play, knowing that refs/umpires won’t call fouls/penalties on every play. In this case, the ump wouldn’t call the real plate all night because of catcher location and Livan just only pitching outside.
August 27, 2007 at 9:14 pm
Oside, first: Welcome to the blog. Second, Blum got the nickname ‘Silent L’ early in the season. He’s just ramped up the second half, go figure.
August 27, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Heath Bell with a sweet 8th. Love how outstanding he’s been as another power arm in the ‘pen this year.
August 27, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Looking at Bell’s called strikes on Hudson, does Welke think the strikezone is supposed to be as wide as the player’s knees to armpits and only as tall as the plate?
August 27, 2007 at 9:16 pm
#61: Kevin, I think you nailed it.
August 27, 2007 at 9:21 pm
JENGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 27, 2007 at 9:21 pm
Nice call by the umps. HOME. RUN.
August 27, 2007 at 9:21 pm
JENGA
August 27, 2007 at 9:22 pm
Ahhh…breathing room
August 27, 2007 at 9:22 pm
I hated him as a Dodger… I love him as a Friar. I admit it.
August 27, 2007 at 9:23 pm
Good call by the umpires. Milty didn’t even know.
August 27, 2007 at 9:23 pm
OK, anyone else watching Channel 4, and yelling “Jack Cust” at Matty V? You know what I mean?
August 27, 2007 at 9:23 pm
Ring the bells, baby.
August 27, 2007 at 9:23 pm
This just in. The General is a good hitter.
August 27, 2007 at 9:24 pm
DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!DONG!!!!!
(Sorry I was a little late…)
August 27, 2007 at 9:24 pm
73: Bradley plays in the field. Cust does not. Bradley > Cust.
August 27, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Personally I’d rather see a large strikezone although more up and down than side to side. It seemed like tonight Welke’s strikezone was moved six inches to the outside for the batters. 6 inches off the plate on the outside, strike. Six inches over the plate on the inside, ball. That pitch from Cruz to Giles seemed to be good but he called it a ball. But at least he’s consistent.
August 27, 2007 at 9:26 pm
Stu, I was thinking the same thing. But I’m awfully glad we acquired Bradley. it’s not often a contender trades a minor league reliever in mid-season for a guy who immediately becomes their best player.
August 27, 2007 at 9:26 pm
Nice pitch, Trevor.
August 27, 2007 at 9:27 pm
Close it out for Peavy –Senior Hoffman.
August 27, 2007 at 9:30 pm
Can of corn for #2
August 27, 2007 at 9:31 pm
Not to usurp another, but…
death
August 27, 2007 at 9:31 pm
taxes
August 27, 2007 at 9:32 pm
OK, one more, Trev…
August 27, 2007 at 9:33 pm
YES
August 27, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Thank God! This series is going to give me an ulcer.
August 27, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Ring the Bell, game over, the Paaadddrressss win
August 27, 2007 at 9:34 pm
“Sometimes, fake is better.”
LOL
August 27, 2007 at 9:35 pm
87: you and me both brother
August 27, 2007 at 9:37 pm
87 & 90
you still have un-ulcered guts after that Mets series?
I’m envious over here….
August 27, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Wow. Bob Melvin is a moron. Why was Clark sitting on the bench? Trevor was leaving pitches up in the zone yet again, and how many times has Clark beaten us in the past? What a bonehead.
August 27, 2007 at 9:38 pm
It used to be I could give a sigh of relief when Trevor came in. now I tend to hold my breath. Nice win tonight.
August 27, 2007 at 9:39 pm
73 & 77 - I hear both of you. I’ll give the edge to Bradley over Cust, but Cust hit a ton for the A’s earlier this year. And don’t get me wrong - I love having Bradley on the Padres. He hits (duh) and brings a competitive edge that very few Padres have ever exhibited.
This series is gonna be good.
August 27, 2007 at 9:40 pm
94 - d’oh, make that 77 and 79. gotta observe good commenting etiquette.
August 27, 2007 at 9:40 pm
Rich - haha
August 27, 2007 at 9:42 pm
Peavy was vintage 1998 Kevin Brown, pitching and hitting.
August 27, 2007 at 9:43 pm
Check the stats Padre fans, the only thing stopping Jake Peavy leading the NL in ERA, Wins AND K’s is Chris Young’s 2.12 ERA. Life is not so bad…
Now just remember to chant “Pythagoras” 10 times before bed each night, and everything will be ok…
August 27, 2007 at 9:43 pm
Whew. We definitely needed that one. Now let’s go out tomorrow and knock around Webb to cement Peavy as the front-runner for the Cy Young.
August 27, 2007 at 9:46 pm
#99: It would be nice if they bake Webb to get Jake on the way to the CYA. He well deserves it, no doubt.
August 27, 2007 at 9:55 pm
A Padre should have got it last year. I’m biased, I know… but I like that idea as motivation. It worked on September 30, 2006…
August 27, 2007 at 10:54 pm
What a fun game. Very satisfying victory. Here are two shots from Section 300:

http://www.geoffreynyoung.com/.....eboard.jpg
First is Jake delivering the pitch that would push him past Andy Benes and into first place all-time on the Padres strikeout list.
Second is, well, pretty self-explanatory…
