I’d love to see Hairston get some innings at 2B. I think his bat can really help us.
Uh oh. According to Gameday, Wells got three pitches called balls that reasonably could have been called strikes. How soon does he get ejected tonight?
We should do a “f@#% defense” platoon at second with Hairston and Mackowiak. Probably not a great idea when Wells, Maddux, Germano, or Hensley are pitching, but it definitely should be done when CY is on the mound, and maybe for Peavy as well.
We need to really take it to Owings. He’s been horrible lately.
3: How bad is Hairston at 2B? I know he came up as a 2B and played the majority of 04 in the majors as the Snakes 2B. I heard he was below average, but I mean so is Blum, and Blum can’t hit like Hairston.
UZR has him as slightly above average. David Pinto’s probabilistic model of range had him as one of the worst second baseman in the league, although still better than Blum and not intolerably bad. By conversion rate of balls in zone and rate of reaching balls out of zone, he was about as good at Marcus Giles in 2004. So he’s probably somewhat below average but not a butcher.
Shit, I hope OG is fine. We need him in the lineup.
What happened?

Wells was up 0-2 on the 8th hitter in the order with two outs and the bases empty. How the hell has that turned into this?

The Arizona TV announcers, and it’s not close. At least Chris Young was being good at his job there. The AZ announcers are just really, really bad at theirs.

Chris Young has freaking killed us this year. Damn this team needs to get this win. We cannot continue to lose to the Dbacks.

Why wasn’t Wells pulled after the intentional walk? We have freaking 12 pitchers. We just had an off day. We can afford to bring in someone with an actual chance to get out of their without giving up a run.

Things are quickly unraveling here…we went from possibly being up 5-2, and instead we’re now down 4-1. That really hurts.
Another set of bad moves by Bud Black tonite. First, he lets Wells hit for himself, and then he lets Wells pitch the sixth.
I just really don’t know what it’s going to take to get this team going. It seems like we’re hitting the balls hard tonite with nothing to show for it, while the Dbacks are catching all the breaks.
Well, I’m off to bed. There’s absolutely no hope with this team right now. Even the 2-1 lead felt insurmountable. Even with Owings out there, we can’t get anything going on offense.
I know this is really pessimistic but I’m tired of losing to Arizona. I’m tired of our pitching imploding and our offense’s inability to provide some support. There’s just no hope right now. Arizona and LA are going to have to lose the division for us to win it right now.

Two runners on, one out, what we really needed was another base runner to bring the tying run to the plate. And the next two hitters’ up had OBP’s of .250 and .270. Ouch.
Cameron’s getting really good at this come in and get one batter out to end the inning business.
I have been following the Padres since 1982. I do not recall a more pathetic offensive team than this. This team needs much more than a new batting coach.
