I’d love to see Hairston get some innings at 2B. I think his bat can really help us.

Uh oh. According to Gameday, Wells got three pitches called balls that reasonably could have been called strikes. How soon does he get ejected tonight?

We should do a “f@#% defense” platoon at second with Hairston and Mackowiak. Probably not a great idea when Wells, Maddux, Germano, or Hensley are pitching, but it definitely should be done when CY is on the mound, and maybe for Peavy as well.

  4. Posted August 1, 2007 at 7:13 pm | Permalink

We need to really take it to Owings. He’s been horrible lately.

  5. Posted August 1, 2007 at 7:14 pm | Permalink

3: How bad is Hairston at 2B? I know he came up as a 2B and played the majority of 04 in the majors as the Snakes 2B. I heard he was below average, but I mean so is Blum, and Blum can’t hit like Hairston.

UZR has him as slightly above average. David Pinto’s probabilistic model of range had him as one of the worst second baseman in the league, although still better than Blum and not intolerably bad. By conversion rate of balls in zone and rate of reaching balls out of zone, he was about as good at Marcus Giles in 2004. So he’s probably somewhat below average but not a butcher.

Shit, I hope OG is fine. We need him in the lineup.

Doubles to the 8th hitter and the pitcher? With two outs?

  10. Ben B.
    Posted August 1, 2007 at 8:13 pm | Permalink

Wells was up 0-2 on the 8th hitter in the order with two outs and the bases empty. How the hell has that turned into this?

All right, let’s have Blum bunt here and bring in Mackowiak to pinch hit for Wells.

  12. Posted August 1, 2007 at 8:24 pm | Permalink

Wow, I finally get to watch the Padres and it’s just in time to see Blum make an unproductive out.

It’s like you never left, Geoff. They’ll swear to you that Blum has been productive while you were gone, but don’t you believe them.

I don’t know who I hate more, Chris Young or the Arizona TV announcers.

The Arizona TV announcers, and it’s not close. At least Chris Young was being good at his job there. The AZ announcers are just really, really bad at theirs.

14: I’m getting the SD feed over mlb.tv…. also, HOLY CRAP! I was actually thinking that a grand slam at that moment could be a huge momentum builder for the Padres…. and then Chris Young goes and does that ….. DAMN IT!

14: From the radio broadcast, it sounds like Young really did just save four runs. You can’t fault Cameron there.

Chris Young has freaking killed us this year. Damn this team needs to get this win. We cannot continue to lose to the Dbacks.

17: Chris Young definitely stole away a grand slam. Unbelievable catch…maybe even better than OG’s earlier….

Good thing we let Boomer hit for himself in the bottom of the inning.

Why wasn’t Wells pulled after the intentional walk? We have freaking 12 pitchers. We just had an off day. We can afford to bring in someone with an actual chance to get out of their without giving up a run.

  21. Posted August 1, 2007 at 8:42 pm | Permalink

#17: No doubt, it was a spectacular catch. But I still find the Arizona TV guys annoying. ;-)

And Wells goes boom in the sixth. Shock…

And why isn’t someone with an actual chance to get out of their unscathed brought in, instead of Brocail? The situation is tailor made for Meredith.

Things are quickly unraveling here…we went from possibly being up 5-2, and instead we’re now down 4-1. That really hurts.

Another set of bad moves by Bud Black tonite. First, he lets Wells hit for himself, and then he lets Wells pitch the sixth.

I just really don’t know what it’s going to take to get this team going. It seems like we’re hitting the balls hard tonite with nothing to show for it, while the Dbacks are catching all the breaks.

Well, I’m off to bed. There’s absolutely no hope with this team right now. Even the 2-1 lead felt insurmountable. Even with Owings out there, we can’t get anything going on offense.

I know this is really pessimistic but I’m tired of losing to Arizona. I’m tired of our pitching imploding and our offense’s inability to provide some support. There’s just no hope right now. Arizona and LA are going to have to lose the division for us to win it right now.

Two runners on, one out, what we really needed was another base runner to bring the tying run to the plate. And the next two hitters’ up had OBP’s of .250 and .270. Ouch.

We have probably the three worst hitters on the roster hitting in succession next inning. A rally seems unlikely. Well, a rally was already unlikely, so I guess this just makes it even more ridiculous.

Not a good game for Hairston. 3 K’s in 3 at bats. Is OG hurt?

  51. Pat
    Posted August 1, 2007 at 11:03 pm | Permalink

Bradley certainly has the potential to be a great player, and he frequently teases with amazing but brief displays of his talent; however, at 29, going on 30, with only one season of close to full time productivity under his belt and a verifiable track record of being an unstable personality, it would be foolish to sign him to anything more than a one year contract, imo. And, in all honesty, I’d prefer to let some other team take the risk.

  52. Posted August 1, 2007 at 11:30 pm | Permalink

This is so frustrating. Two big plays, games on inches. Young snagging Cameron’s fly, or, having that fly just hang a tiny bit too long. Then KG missing the DP ball. Hot smash, but he makes that play 39 times out of 40. 6-7 run swing on those two plays.

I have said it before, but I HATE THE DBACKS.

    I hate their announcers.

I hate their ridiculous good fortune. They are 8.6 games over their third order expected wins. Statistically, you would expect them to be 8 under, but they are leading the division. Not a fan of their unis, though does not go as far as hate. The only good thing about them is their GM went to my college, but, right now, I hate him too.

I hate Joe Sheehan plugging them, despite their third order wins, and having him look like a genius (he is a good writer, albeit a steroid apologist), and me, eyeing their crappy third order wins, thinking, “Joe’s got this one wrong.”

    I hate these statistics:

    Padres: 312 AB, 751 OPS, 40 Runs
    DBags: 309 AB, 716 OPS, 43 Runs

This does not include tonight’s game. So, we have outhit them by a wide margin but scored 3 fewer runs. OK, but, then 3 run differential suggests we should be about .500 with them, not 3-6 (again before tonight, so now 3-7). We ought to be 6-4 or 7-3 against them, but, instead, it is reversed. They are like the Giants last year. We had a outhit them 703 vs 685 but went 6-13 against them.

HATE THEM. OK, not real hate, but, you know, baseball hate.

    Aaarrgggghhhh!!!!

    Posted August 2, 2007 at 12:11 am | Permalink

52- If we fall short regarding expected runs (not that you said exactly that) it is likely due to the multitude of dismal OBA guys in our lineup. Seriously, how often do you see a lineup so stocked with guys around or below the .300 OBA mark?!??!

I miss Geoff, he would be able to put this all into a decent perspective. That game sucked until the bottom on the 9th, then it sucked again.
