Nice job by Trevor Hoffman on Friday night. For those who remain unclear on the dangers of judging a man based on an eight-game sample, here’s a clue:

Trevor Hoffman’s Last 24 Games
G IP H HR BB SO ERA BA OBP SLG
Statistics are courtesy of Baseball-Reference and are through games of May 15, 2008.
8/28/07 – 9/25/07 8 8 6 0 1 6 1.13 .207 .233 .241
9/28/07 – 4/11/08 8 7 12 1 5 10 12.86 .375 .447 .688
4/13/08 – 5/16/08 8 8 5 1 1 10 1.13 .179 .207 .321

And, no, you don’t want to go reaching any conclusions based solely on this most recent stretch either.

  1. This is looking to be a lopsided pitching match-up.

  2. that was a beautiful swing by OG

  3. Geez, I thought the infield fly rule, was for plays like that.

  4. Kouz has to let that ball get to the bag – the throw travels a lot faster than his hand can.

  5. Wolf lucky to get out of that with only one run scored.

  6. I was a little emotional earlier in the season relating to Hoffman. I said he was done. Obviously as of today he’s not. Judging by the end of last season and the beginning of this season one would feel like Hoffy had been figured out by opposing hitters. He’s turned it around so far…….

I still believe they need to plan for after he’s here though…..

Then send him to the HOF.

  7. #6@Turbine Dude: Padre Baseball: It could of been worse.

  8. #7@Oside Jon: Jon, I expect to see more of Bell next season than Trevor (if he doesn’t retire).

#8@Field39: Could have been MUCH worse!

  9. #7@Oside Jon: Other than No. 1 starter and first base and wherever Headley plays, they need a lot of plans.

  10. Another hit batter and it will get ugly.

  11. I don’t like the stress of having that many runners on base and waiting to see if Wolf will get out of it.

  12. Those sideburns look really stoopid on Ichiro. Just an observation…

  13. What was that? A five pitch inning for Bedard?

  14. #14@2nd row in the Porch: Well, when your team hits 3 easy pop-outs, it’s easy to keep the other team’s pitch count down…

  15. #10@Kevin: Actually, a decent closer is easier to find than any position player or starting pitcher.

  16. I tell my little leaguers not to do that every game! THEY know!

  17. Horrible baserunning

  18. AGONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WoooooooooooHoooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Well, no damage to the baserunning blunder, I guess.

  20. Nice HR Adrian. What are his projections for 2008? 30-40 HR’s?
    Nice bro.

  21. #10@Kevin:
Got that right. Need plans for almost everything….

  22. #22@Oside Jon: His pace just became 36.9.

  23. Would you consider it a good at-bat by Khalil when he makes the pitcher throw 5 pitches before he chases the breaking ball in the dirt?

  24. #25@Schlom: No

  25. I can’t figure out why ANY pitcher EVER throws Khalil a fastball.

  26. Lucky nobody got speared by that bat.

  27. #26@Turbine Dude: But he did make him throw an extra three pitches! :)

  28. #29@Schlom: That fine. But you don’t score runs by working the pitch count and getting punched out. If he had capitalized on it and got on base, then I would’ve called it a good at bat.

  29. Ichiro is now batting .275.

  30. I don’t want to see Wolf pitch after the fifth. Not too excited about him pitching then.

  31. 70 pitches through 5 for Bedard. If only Jake could learn to do that!

  32. #33@2nd row in the Porch: If only Jake could face the Padres.

  33. Field39 — You are SO right! We make Cy Young out of everyone!

  34. #32@Kevin: #33@2nd row in the Porch: I think Randy is good for another 1 1/2 innings. Our middle relief makes me nervous.

  35. #30@Turbine Dude: I was joking obviously. It is amazing that anyone throws the ball near the plate with Khalil although I guess you have to get to two strikes before you can get him to chase the offspeed pitch in the dirt. At least he plays a great defensive SS — you could be stuck like the Mariners with a mistake only hitter at 1B.

  36. I’d like to see a quick hook if anyone gets on base.

  37. #37@Schlom: Sorry I didn’t get the joke. I’m multi-tasking with two screens and 6 open windows while watching the game.

    Nice catch for Gooch, there…

  38. I love this idiot in the front row yelling at the umpire. Did you see the look of horror on his companion’s face? Hah! He is so busted…

  39. Who is also making $14m this season as well. At least it’s the last year of his deal and the payroll is high enough overall that he’s only making 12% of their total (would be 19% here). That’s not good.

  40. #41@Schlom: They could of dumped him last season, when they placed him on waivers and he was claimed. Then they pulled him back.

  41. OK, I was wrong about Wolf.

  42. I really question sticking with Wolf to face the top of this lineup. Why not get him out of here with a good start and a positive result? Let our newly functioning bully take it the rest of the way…

  43. I wouldn’t have pitched Wolf in the 7th. I would go Meredith, Bell, Hoffman.

  44. I like khalil greene is so cool am like his number#1 fan.I am oside jon’s son and this is my new name. I’m am 9 years old and the padres are my favorite team.P.S. my realy name is DANNY.

  45. #44@Marsh: Yeah, you knew he was going to go over 100 pitches this inning.

  46. I like this game I am so sad now they got a tie and it is 2 to 2.

  47. #46@shieldon oside: Greene is a good choice as a favorite player.

  48. What a great AB by Ichiro! there. Fouled off a bunch of pitches before Wolf finally made a mistake and grooved one. Too bad Iguchi didn’t make a better throw there as they had a shot at the out at the plate. Of course, that’s what you get when you give up hits to Jamie Burke.
