Here, There, and Everywhere

My latest article at Hardball Times looks back at a 1989 game in which the Cleveland Indians collected six hits, all home runs. Joe Carter knocked three of them. Carter, you may recall, came to San Diego the following year and gave a convincing demonstration of how utterly useless the RBI statistic is. Ten men in MLB history have driven in 100 or more runs with a sub-90 OPS+. Carter is the only one to do it twice. Way to go, Joe. Turning to the present, the good folks at Right Field Bleachers have taken the time to chat with me about the Padres as ...

Padres Farm Report (19 Jun 08)

Before we get to the goods, one of our readers was at Monday's Hall of Fame game (you know, the one between the Padres and Cubs that got rained out) and took some photos, as well as a video of Trevor Hoffman playing catch with one of his sons. Pretty cool... Triple-A -- Portland 4, Tucson 3 Matt Antonelli: 2-for-4, BB, SB Peter Ciofrone (3B): 1-for-5 Chip Ambres (RF): 1-for-5 Brian Myrow: 1-for-4, BB Will Venable (CF): 3-for-4, 2B...

Unraveling

That sucked. In case you'd forgotten how 2007 ended, the Padres gave a nice little encore Sunday afternoon in San Francisco. They battled back from a deficit, took the lead in extra innings on a two-run homer, then watched Trevor Hoffman give it back, with the game ending on a bizarre defensive play. As was the case with Scott Hairston last October, Adrian Gonzalez' dramatic home run is now just a footnote, not the story. Nobody cares that he pounded the first pitch he saw from rookie left-hander Alex Hinshaw over the center field fence at PhoneCo Park. Nobody cares that he sat on ...

When Projections Go Bad

What the heck, now is as good a time as any to revisit pre-season projections. I know, OPS and ERA aren't the end-all and be-all, but they're good enough for government work... Padres (16-27) @ Mariners (16-27) Randy Wolf vs Erik Bedard 7:10 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 181 MLB, B-R Nice job by Trevor Hoffman on Friday night. Friday Links (25 Apr 08)

I'm pressed for time this morning, so links are offered with minimal commentary (and there was much rejoicing): Alan Drooz at the U-T misses Mike Cameron (h/t PM). Clay Hensley's first rehab start went well (h/t Field39). MB at Friar Forecast asks how we know when a player is done. Good question. Amy Nelson at ESPN jumps on the bandwagon and writes about Trevor Hoffman (h/t Coronado Mike). Tom Krasovic at the U-T informs us that Chase Headley was sent ...

Monkeys on Roller Skates

Thanks to reader Lance for hooking us up with seats two rows behind the visitors dugout on Wednesday night. First time I've been anywhere near that close at Petco Park, and it's a whole different experience. For a guy like me who lives in nosebleed, just, wow. Also, belated welcome to all the folks at Gaslamp Ball who came over and hung with us while GLB was unavailable. Good to see so many familiar names as I browsed through the IGD.The national story will be that Trevor Hoffman blew a save. Hooray for the media. Here are some other stories that won't get as much play: Brian Giles struck out ...
