And it’s pretty clear that trend started when Ramon left…although I wouldn’t have paid him $9M per, either.

Let’s go Jake, need to take this series…

#23@OkinawaPadres: Heard on the BP show before the game: CY has been pushed back a day in favor of Maddux, who will go on his normal rest tomorrow night. According to Bud, CY had what was termed a “stiff elbow” after coming out of his last start against the Dodgers. Doesn’t seem to be anything concerning the team, but they felt an extra day of rest was in order. I’m not sure I like the sound of this – the phrase “stiff elbow” doesn’t sound too good to me.

If you are just going to completely ignore the baserunner like Peavy did right there, why not just go from the windup? It’s not like Peavy gave Bard any chance at all to throw the runner out there. Holliday took a walking lead and started running as even before Peavy lifted his leg.

    Didn’t matter though.

So Peavy completely ignores Holliday yet slide steps when Tavares is the baserunner.

The situations were much different though, one out and Tulowitzki up when Tavares ran and two out and Hawpe up when Holliday stole. It makes sense that you’d concentrate more on the runner and less on the batter in the first case and vice-versa in the second.

Then mlb has a classification system that’s right in there. So you can just sort by pitch type and count ‘em up or do a number of things (avg. speed, location, etc.). It’s pretty simple once you get the hang of it, but let me know if you have any questions (if you ever decide to try it out, of course).

#97@Schlom: hmm I’m actually not sure. The way I do it is just go to that game, then go to play by play, then go through each pitcher id for that game until I find Peavy or whoever I’m looking for (you can tell by looking at the inning and batters in the data).

If you want all his starts at once (which is what I’d ideally want), that’s more complicated and I haven’t been able to figure it out yet … if you’re interested, I know of some sources that explain it well, though.

btw, I’m not sure what you did, but here’s the 2008 data: http://gd2.mlb.com/components/game/mlb/year_2008/ … then I just go to month, day, the game you want, pbp, pitchers, then find the guy I’m looking for …

Ambres’ track record isn’t close to Huber’s in the minors and he’s older. Venable might be a possibility but he did have an OPS of 710 in Double A last season.

    Curve: 7 (79.7)
    Splitter: 4 (85.8)
    Cutter: 3 (87.7)
    Change: 2 (86.3)

Huber & Crabbe : Pure guts and speculation as to their failure though because neither of them have had enough opportunity yet to measure their worth.

PMAC only had about 120 or so PA’s but I am already tired of that huge windmill swing- he needs to cut down and start meeting the ball –he should watch video of how the player he is most compared to in Padre land–John Kruk would slash the stick.

It looked like McAnulty picked up Hoffman and then tried to make it to third. If Hoffman didn’t hold him up there, he should be fired.

    #224@Schlom:

No way : ) If you go to the link I gave in 117 and the follow those steps I gave there, you’ll get to a page with a bunch of numbers and crap all jumbled together — once you get there, save it as an xml file somewhere on your computer — then open up excel and then open that file. All the data for Peavy or whatever pitcher will be there in a spreadsheet. Then you just have to play with add in excel … since I’m pretty bad at explaining this stuff, I’d recommend googling PITCHf/x and checking around. There are a ton of people doing awesome analysis with it, if you did not know.

It definitely looked from those replays that Hoffman waved P-Mac into third, he never looked back and was looking toward 3rd as he rounding 2nd. He also had a WTF look on his face toward Glenn Hoffman after he was throw out.

  258. Posted April 17, 2008 at 10:32 pm | Permalink

251: I agree, based on PMac’s reaction rounding second I have to think that he either was waved on or at least thought he was being waved. Another third base coaches box mishap perhaps?

#246@MB: Some versions of Excel have the ability to import the data directly from the web page. I think it’s under the Data menu, look for “Import Web Data”, then just paste in the URL to the page you want.

From the Rockies’ replay, Hoffman is clearly waving him on. He should be fired tomorrow. You have one job — and you failed miserably. This wasn’t bad judgment — it was as if he wasn’t paying attention.

As devil’s advocate only, PMac busted out of the box and there was a bobble in right field so perhaps that thought is a perfect throw is needed and let’s win this thing on a sac fly.

That was first time since Torrealba’s at-bat earlier (I can’t remember when) that a Rockie complained about a ball-strike call. In Holliday’s case, it probably was low.

I was just looking at Holliday’s home-road splits in his career. At home his OPS is 1088, which is only behind the career marks of Babe Ruth and Ted Williams. On the road it’s 782 — or the same as Marcus Giles.

He was actually decent on the road last year but overall he’s at best a league average hitting LF on the road (although of course he doesn’t get to hit at Coors Field so his road stats are a little worse then they appear).

Helton’s even better at home, 1129 but not quite as bad on the road, 883. It’s amazing to think that Tony Gwynn won those batting titles from 1994-1997 over Larry Walker and the other Rockies. Just amazing considering they could actually hit for average and got at least a 25 point boost.

The Fonz in on Craig Ferguson. He’s looking good.

#594@Richard: Holliday’s? Not really. I don’t think a 782 OPS is anything special for a LF. Only Jason Bay and Juan Pierre were worse last season, Roberts and Pierre in 2006.

its also funny to think that the names of the possible winning and losing pitchers are kip and glendon. sounds like a british kids show

Someone should really spike a batch of brownies with horse laxatives and see if the home plate ump has a sweet tooth after the game. He deserves a wild ride like the one he has given us.

#639@Richard: I’m not sure that OPS+ can accurately account for the extreme effect of Coors. Plus what is the average OPS+ for LF now? He might be awesome at home but he’s terrible on the road — he’s the anti-Khalil with the glove.

Padres give away another one (with an assist by the home plate umpire). But hey, one game can’t matter, can it?
