  1. Its not May yet so I expect the bats to continue to be as cold as a witch’s er, a, anyway, cold. Tomorrow being May 1st, I expect the bats to suddenly heat up. But if not, then OG needs to slump bust.

    Go Padres!

  2. #1@PM: They just did! Thank you Agone.

  3. Interesting defense by the Phillies so far.

  4. I was going to complain about Huber not starting against the lefty today, but then I looked up Moyer’s splits. Turns out he’s actually slightly better against righties, so it’s ok to have the lefties starting today.

  5. I think the green hats sucked the talent out of the Phillies this inning.

  6. Love the sarcastic applause for Jayson Werth on the routine fly ball.

  7. Hmm, Philadelphia is probably not the ideal place for Chris Young to pitch.

  8. Hindsight being 20/20, probably shoulda walked him.

  9. The Phils have no problem hitting the ball.

  10. CY’s fastball velocity is still down around 86 instead of 89 where it was last year when he was healthy.

  11. This is not a park that will be friendly to CY’s zero movement fastball.

  12. 11 homers for Utley already. Talk about a hot start.

  13. #13@SDSUBaseball: Pssh. Padres have 17 as a team already. Take that Chase Utley. You are being slightly outhomered by an entire team!

  14. Why is Edmonds starting vs a lefty?

  15. Could Jenkins stuff anymore chew in that left cheek of his, yuck.

  16. #15@SDSUBaseball: Why is Edmonds starting, period?

  17. #17@Turbine Dude: Because Padres managers love to have that veteran presence in the line-up, but really Hairston played well in CF yesterday. Let him do it again, give Huber the start in LF. Edmonds is Blum-esque against lefties.

  18. Alright Kouz!

  19. KOOOOOOOOZ! Moyer can always wake up dead bats.

  20. #14@Ben B.: He’s almost caught the Royals (13).

  21. While looking for info about “Defensive Effeciency”, I came across this page at BP with Standings + goos supporting team stats …

    http://www.baseballprospectus.com/team_audit.php

    FYI.

  22. #17@Turbine Dude: Supposedly Edmonds has a limited amount of time to earn a spot on this roster going forward. I think it was Darren Smith who mentioned this on the radio today.

  23. OT NEWS FLASH: Micah Owings can hit …

    http://tinyurl.com/4aldq6

Ouch, seems like everything is breaking the Dbacks way so far … c’mon May, let’s get started!

  24. #23@Richard Wade: They aren’t messing around, he gets five more months and that is it.

  25. #23@Richard Wade: Glad to hear that.

OT: I can’t believe Moyer (45 yrs. old!) got a hit off of CY.

  26. #24 … and in that same box score, I notice that Jose Cr Jr lowered his BA to .062!!! Before today, his OPS = .242 + .111 = .354 … YIKES!

  27. #25@Field39: I want to say Smith said ten days.

  28. #28@Richard Wade: With our luck Edmonds will homer this series and solidify his spot for another month.

  29. I like that Josh Bard has recorded the out on Chris Coste both times he’s batted tonight. Coste was Bard’s backup at Buffalo in 2001.

  30. #30@Geoff Young: I like that Bard just got a stand-up double.

  31. #28@Richard Wade:

Yeah, that’s exactly what he said. He something like he has it on “good authority” that Edmonds will be given 10 days to turn it around and then he will be cut.

He then said that there is a trade in waiting once a final decision on Edmonds is made that will net us Randy Winn For Steve Garrison or Will Innman.

I swear I heard that come out of his mouth and today was the second day in a row.

  32. #32@KRS1: Winn’s not a bad player, not a long-term solution but is signed through 09 and his defensive numbers in center have been pretty good. Offense varies from marginal to good.

If its true, kinda makes you wonder why they bothered with Edmonds in the first place.

Hopefully its Garrison, since Winn’s numbers are down.

  33. OT: What is the purpose for the green ball caps tonight?

  34. GUCH!!! Nice.

  35. #32@KRS1: I wouldnt give up Inman for Winn, but I would give up Garrisson. Winn is a nice player, but I dont know if he is much better than what we already have. At least he has experience in CF and his defense is still there.

  36. #33@Tom Waits: #36@SDSUBaseball:

I guess it comes down to if you would rather keep Garrison ( I don’t think I would do Inman ) and hand over CF to Hairston or if you think Winn is that much of an upgrade that you let Garrison go.

I think Darren Smith was saying Winn’s making around $8 million through 09 and to me that’s a little much. I like Winn but I’m not sold he is $8 million a year + Garrison better than what we’ve got now.

  37. Thru 6 …

    Pitches-strikes – C Young 101-64; J Moyer 98-62; C Durbin 13-7.

    Ground balls-fly balls – C Young 7-5; J Moyer 6-9; C Durbin 1-1.

    Batters faced – C Young 23; J Moyer 28; C Durbin 3.

… yo, nice job by CY!

  38. Hairston WANTS that CF position, you can tell.

  39. #37@KRS1: Winn’s money is about what they’re paying Edmonds, and Garrison is a fringe prospect in my eyes. Maybe SF would even send money.

The Padres may see Hairston as a platoon hitter – not saying they’re right, but that may be their analysis. And they may feel he’s better in a corner. But it would be surprising to see them pile an extra 6+ million onto this year’s payroll with a relatively small chance of winning the division.

  40. #37@KRS1: I agree. Like I said I would deal Garrisson, but definitely not Inman. I dont think he is really much better than what we have.

Hairston hustles out a grounder. He has shown some speed this year. Its good to see that every once in a while. Trotting out a ground ball is something that should never be done.

  41. #37@KRS1:

    #40@Tom Waits:

For the rest of this year, though, we might be better served seeing what Shrek can do.

How many men will we leave on tonight?

  42. #40@Tom Waits: Lots of times fringe prospects are the ones that pan out and make the team as useful ‘pen guys and such. I like Garrisson, I like his command. Who knows if he is one of the guys that makes it, but that Linebrink trade has looked pretty dang good in my eyes. You are right though, there is no reason to toss that amount of salary on the books when they are in this position. I dont think Winn is really even worth the 8 million.

  43. #42@Tom Waits:

Yeah you are right. I do also think it would be surprising to see them add money unless they really want Winn for next season.

  44. #42@Tom Waits: Hey at least there are men on to start with. This is a start. We won a lot of games last year leaving 10+ men on. Just good to see 10+ hits and 4 or 5 of them going for extra bases.

  45. GY just got a mention by Matty! Nice!!!

  46. yay geoff!

  47. Any pub is good pub.

Have no idea what Mud and Matty were saying, it was a pretty jumbled thought, but DS and GY got a nice mention. Way to go, GY? You are famous. Now back to work.

  48. #48@PM: GY made a good call in getting Matty to write the forward for this year’s Annual. He’s got mention a lot this season by Matty.

  49. #43@SDSUBaseball: Not “lots” of times. Sometimes. A soft-tossing lefty with good command is easier to find than most other commodities.

That said, I’m not sure I see the need for Winn, even for 2009, unless they’re going to make some other improvements too.

Where’s Stu? Maybe we can get Ducksnorter Face Time with Matty and Mud in ATL next week!
