Its not May yet so I expect the bats to continue to be as cold as a witch’s er, a, anyway, cold. Tomorrow being May 1st, I expect the bats to suddenly heat up. But if not, then OG needs to slump bust.
Go Padres!
April 30, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Our offense sucks.
April 30, 2008 at 4:11 pm
#1@PM: They just did! Thank you Agone.
April 30, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Interesting defense by the Phillies so far.
April 30, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I was going to complain about Huber not starting against the lefty today, but then I looked up Moyer’s splits. Turns out he’s actually slightly better against righties, so it’s ok to have the lefties starting today.
April 30, 2008 at 4:13 pm
I think the green hats sucked the talent out of the Phillies this inning.
April 30, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Love the sarcastic applause for Jayson Werth on the routine fly ball.
April 30, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Hmm, Philadelphia is probably not the ideal place for Chris Young to pitch.
April 30, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Hindsight being 20/20, probably shoulda walked him.
April 30, 2008 at 4:22 pm
The Phils have no problem hitting the ball.
April 30, 2008 at 4:25 pm
CY’s fastball velocity is still down around 86 instead of 89 where it was last year when he was healthy.
April 30, 2008 at 4:26 pm
This is not a park that will be friendly to CY’s zero movement fastball.
April 30, 2008 at 4:27 pm
11 homers for Utley already. Talk about a hot start.
April 30, 2008 at 4:29 pm
#13@SDSUBaseball: Pssh. Padres have 17 as a team already. Take that Chase Utley. You are being slightly outhomered by an entire team!
April 30, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Why is Edmonds starting vs a lefty?
April 30, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Could Jenkins stuff anymore chew in that left cheek of his, yuck.
April 30, 2008 at 4:38 pm
#15@SDSUBaseball: Why is Edmonds starting, period?
April 30, 2008 at 4:41 pm
#17@Turbine Dude: Because Padres managers love to have that veteran presence in the line-up, but really Hairston played well in CF yesterday. Let him do it again, give Huber the start in LF. Edmonds is Blum-esque against lefties.
April 30, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Alright Kouz!
April 30, 2008 at 4:45 pm
KOOOOOOOOZ! Moyer can always wake up dead bats.
April 30, 2008 at 4:47 pm
#14@Ben B.: He’s almost caught the Royals (13).
April 30, 2008 at 4:49 pm
While looking for info about “Defensive Effeciency”, I came across this page at BP with Standings + goos supporting team stats …
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/team_audit.php
FYI.
April 30, 2008 at 4:56 pm
#17@Turbine Dude: Supposedly Edmonds has a limited amount of time to earn a spot on this roster going forward. I think it was Darren Smith who mentioned this on the radio today.
April 30, 2008 at 4:59 pm
OT NEWS FLASH: Micah Owings can hit …
http://tinyurl.com/4aldq6
Ouch, seems like everything is breaking the Dbacks way so far … c’mon May, let’s get started!
April 30, 2008 at 4:59 pm
#23@Richard Wade: They aren’t messing around, he gets five more months and that is it.
April 30, 2008 at 5:00 pm
#23@Richard Wade: Glad to hear that.
OT: I can’t believe Moyer (45 yrs. old!) got a hit off of CY.
April 30, 2008 at 5:03 pm
#24 … and in that same box score, I notice that Jose Cr Jr lowered his BA to .062!!! Before today, his OPS = .242 + .111 = .354 … YIKES!
April 30, 2008 at 5:03 pm
#25@Field39: I want to say Smith said ten days.
April 30, 2008 at 5:08 pm
#28@Richard Wade: With our luck Edmonds will homer this series and solidify his spot for another month.
April 30, 2008 at 5:42 pm
I like that Josh Bard has recorded the out on Chris Coste both times he’s batted tonight. Coste was Bard’s backup at Buffalo in 2001.
April 30, 2008 at 5:48 pm
#30@Geoff Young: I like that Bard just got a stand-up double.
April 30, 2008 at 5:49 pm
#28@Richard Wade:
Yeah, that’s exactly what he said. He something like he has it on “good authority” that Edmonds will be given 10 days to turn it around and then he will be cut.
He then said that there is a trade in waiting once a final decision on Edmonds is made that will net us Randy Winn For Steve Garrison or Will Innman.
I swear I heard that come out of his mouth and today was the second day in a row.
April 30, 2008 at 5:54 pm
#32@KRS1: Winn’s not a bad player, not a long-term solution but is signed through 09 and his defensive numbers in center have been pretty good. Offense varies from marginal to good.
If its true, kinda makes you wonder why they bothered with Edmonds in the first place.
Hopefully its Garrison, since Winn’s numbers are down.
April 30, 2008 at 5:55 pm
OT: What is the purpose for the green ball caps tonight?
April 30, 2008 at 5:59 pm
GUCH!!! Nice.
April 30, 2008 at 6:03 pm
#32@KRS1: I wouldnt give up Inman for Winn, but I would give up Garrisson. Winn is a nice player, but I dont know if he is much better than what we already have. At least he has experience in CF and his defense is still there.
April 30, 2008 at 6:11 pm
#33@Tom Waits: #36@SDSUBaseball:
I guess it comes down to if you would rather keep Garrison ( I don’t think I would do Inman ) and hand over CF to Hairston or if you think Winn is that much of an upgrade that you let Garrison go.
I think Darren Smith was saying Winn’s making around $8 million through 09 and to me that’s a little much. I like Winn but I’m not sold he is $8 million a year + Garrison better than what we’ve got now.
April 30, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Thru 6 …
Pitches-strikes - C Young 101-64; J Moyer 98-62; C Durbin 13-7.
Ground balls-fly balls - C Young 7-5; J Moyer 6-9; C Durbin 1-1.
Batters faced - C Young 23; J Moyer 28; C Durbin 3.
… yo, nice job by CY!
April 30, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Hairston WANTS that CF position, you can tell.
April 30, 2008 at 6:20 pm
#37@KRS1: Winn’s money is about what they’re paying Edmonds, and Garrison is a fringe prospect in my eyes. Maybe SF would even send money.
The Padres may see Hairston as a platoon hitter - not saying they’re right, but that may be their analysis. And they may feel he’s better in a corner. But it would be surprising to see them pile an extra 6+ million onto this year’s payroll with a relatively small chance of winning the division.
April 30, 2008 at 6:21 pm
#37@KRS1: I agree. Like I said I would deal Garrisson, but definitely not Inman. I dont think he is really much better than what we have.
Hairston hustles out a grounder. He has shown some speed this year. Its good to see that every once in a while. Trotting out a ground ball is something that should never be done.
April 30, 2008 at 6:21 pm
#37@KRS1:
#40@Tom Waits:
For the rest of this year, though, we might be better served seeing what Shrek can do.
How many men will we leave on tonight?
April 30, 2008 at 6:26 pm
#40@Tom Waits: Lots of times fringe prospects are the ones that pan out and make the team as useful ‘pen guys and such. I like Garrisson, I like his command. Who knows if he is one of the guys that makes it, but that Linebrink trade has looked pretty dang good in my eyes. You are right though, there is no reason to toss that amount of salary on the books when they are in this position. I dont think Winn is really even worth the 8 million.
April 30, 2008 at 6:26 pm
#42@Tom Waits:
Yeah you are right. I do also think it would be surprising to see them add money unless they really want Winn for next season.
April 30, 2008 at 6:27 pm
#42@Tom Waits: Hey at least there are men on to start with. This is a start. We won a lot of games last year leaving 10+ men on. Just good to see 10+ hits and 4 or 5 of them going for extra bases.
April 30, 2008 at 6:28 pm
GY just got a mention by Matty! Nice!!!
April 30, 2008 at 6:28 pm
yay geoff!
April 30, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Any pub is good pub.
Have no idea what Mud and Matty were saying, it was a pretty jumbled thought, but DS and GY got a nice mention. Way to go, GY? You are famous. Now back to work.
April 30, 2008 at 6:34 pm
#48@PM: GY made a good call in getting Matty to write the forward for this year’s Annual. He’s got mention a lot this season by Matty.
April 30, 2008 at 6:37 pm
#43@SDSUBaseball: Not “lots” of times. Sometimes. A soft-tossing lefty with good command is easier to find than most other commodities.
That said, I’m not sure I see the need for Winn, even for 2009, unless they’re going to make some other improvements too.
Where’s Stu? Maybe we can get Ducksnorter Face Time with Matty and Mud in ATL next week!
April 30, 2008 at 6:38 pm
#46@Turbine Dude: Sweet. Always appreciated.
#48@PM: See #30.
April 30, 2008 at 6:41 pm
OT: GY, you still planning the Storm/Padre double header DS outing this year?
April 30, 2008 at 6:45 pm
#52@Turbine Dude: I think they’re planning it for a weekday afternoon this year, so probably not.
April 30, 2008 at 6:45 pm
As much as I hate the ‘wave’, everytime the Philli fans do it, our batters get a ball call.
April 30, 2008 at 6:49 pm
The Pads have a mental stigma about having the bases loaded. They couldn’t turn a trick at the Trophy Lounge in National City.
April 30, 2008 at 6:53 pm
#55@Turbine Dude:
No *** in the champagne room…
Oh wait, wrong blog.
April 30, 2008 at 6:54 pm
I hate check swing calls where the bat passes through the zone and it’s still not called a swing. Mark Grant is dead on about that issue.
April 30, 2008 at 6:55 pm
#53@Geoff Young: It’s a 2 for 1 day on Aug. 27th (Wed.).
April 30, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Another great outing for Inman at San Antonio.
April 30, 2008 at 7:00 pm
WTF? All of these strikes not called?
April 30, 2008 at 7:02 pm
See, Edmonds CAN catch a fly ball. As long as it is hit right to him or has a 10 second hang time.
April 30, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Can you see it coming?
April 30, 2008 at 7:05 pm
#62@LynchMob: Yeah, I can. Unfortunatley.
April 30, 2008 at 7:06 pm
0 for 5 for Jimmy Edmonds. He may be on his way out, huh?
April 30, 2008 at 7:06 pm
In ten more days, Edmunds will be looking up at .100.
April 30, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Personally, I let Heath Bell bat here and give him first crack at the 9th inning … but that’s must me …
April 30, 2008 at 7:08 pm
#64@Richard Wade: I don’t think he’ll be involved in any group hugs anytime soon.
April 30, 2008 at 7:08 pm
66 … *just* me …
April 30, 2008 at 7:09 pm
#65@Field39: He’s already down to .153 with no power or walks.
April 30, 2008 at 7:09 pm
So … it’s a coin flip?
April 30, 2008 at 7:09 pm
#66@LynchMob: The J is right above the M.
April 30, 2008 at 7:10 pm
I like to think Hoffy can keep them to one run or less this inning.
April 30, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Where exactly did Ball 1 miss?
April 30, 2008 at 7:11 pm
#73@Richard Wade: It didn’t matter, I guess.
April 30, 2008 at 7:12 pm
That didn’t look like that bad of a pitch, but it caught too much plate for an 0-2 pitch.
April 30, 2008 at 7:14 pm
That was a pretty pitch to even the count.
April 30, 2008 at 7:15 pm
He made Dobbs look bad in that AB. Two swinging strikes at pitches out of the zone. One called strike on a pitch in the zone.
April 30, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Can of corn to win the game.
April 30, 2008 at 7:16 pm
For tonight, I was wrong … YES!
April 30, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Game over. Padres win. Hoffy looked good.
April 30, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Trevor is toast.
April 30, 2008 at 7:20 pm
#81@Geoff Young: I wish he would retire gracefully and become the Padres pitching coach. Just my feelings.
April 30, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Today’s your last chance to put a stake in the sand with respect to your expectations for Trevor for the month of May …
http://www.predictify.com/auctionview.aspx?ID=3873
In this forum, there are currently 102 responses with 16% predicting Trevor to have >80% success in May vs 54% at 65-80% and 22% at 50-65% and 9% at 80% success versus 25% at 65-80%, 8% at 50-65%, and 11% at <50%.
I don’t think either poll has much significance … but perhaps when we meet up at Cooperstown for Trevor’s HOF induction, this will provide insights into the end-game part of Trevor’s MLB story.
April 30, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Oops, the brackets in post #83 got interp’d as HTML … trying again …
Today’s your last chance to put a stake in the sand with respect to your expectations for Trevor for the month of May …
http://www.predictify.com/auctionview.aspx?ID=3873
In this forum, there are currently 102 responses with 16% predicting Trevor to have greater than 80% success in May vs 54% at 65-80% and 22% at 50-65% and 9% at less than 50% …
This is just a way to go “on record” … and to start to see if a group can/does have better insights than you do …
The way I’m looking at this is that this is giving me a forum to be clear about what I think Trevor’s status is … and a quick/clean way to know that I’m wrong should Trevor do what I truly hope he does!
Or if you don’t want to sign up for predictify.com (which is free and I’ve found interesting), here’s the same poll over at GLB …
http://www.gaslampball.com/200.....-do-in-may
And to me, it’s interesting to note that the 68 folks who have voted there so far (presumably Padre fans) are 54% predicting Trevor to have greater than 80% success versus 25% at 65-80%, 8% at 50-65%, and 11% at less than 50%.
I don’t think either poll has much significance … but perhaps when we meet up at Cooperstown for Trevor’s HOF induction, this will provide insights into the end-game part of Trevor’s MLB story.
ps. And clearly the “most done” Padre is Jim Edmonds, who trails Barry Zito for the title of “Most Done in MLB” …
April 30, 2008 at 7:31 pm
#81@Geoff Young: But there’s still some sweet, sweet jam on that toast, bud … I gotta admit
April 30, 2008 at 8:07 pm
#81@Geoff Young: What do you mean? Are you being serious?
April 30, 2008 at 10:27 pm
#86@Kevin: Not even a little. He looked great.
April 30, 2008 at 10:58 pm
#87@Geoff Young: Cool.
