The Padres were outscored, 23-22, over their opening homestand despite outhitting the opposition by a wide margin:

Offense at Petco Park, Early 2008
  BA OBP SLG
Statistics are courtesy of ESPN and are through games of April 6, 2008.
Padres .284 .331 .401
Opponents .193 .275 .320

Maybe on the road they can convert some of that offense into actual runs.

  1. Re: 99 – Are you saying the Kouz is a “Super-2″ and eligible for arbitration after this season? I think he is under Padres control for another year, so any contract extension stuff would probably not start until 2010…I think.

  2. Depending on what the various minor league Pad pitchers do, I could see bringing Maddux back for another 200 innings of 100 OPS+. In today’s market, that’s valuable.

  3. 95: Definitely. He looks good, has only given up 1 run and isnt exactly facing a terrifying line-up. I’d rather Maddux be out there instead of our ‘pen anyway.

  4. 102: I dont think he comes back, but if he does I dont think its for 10 million, most would argue he was overpaid this year.

  5. CM, how was the game at Comerica? Sounds like a good weekend. Those food, hmmm.

    Super-2 goes to arbitration, right?

  6. Quick work there… does Maddux pitch the 7th?

  7. Maddux has 13 groundouts against 0 fly outs. He’s given up three balls in the air all game: the bloop double to Rowand, the single to Molina, and the line drive to Velez that he made the play on.

  8. Thanks…Comerica was fun, but you could see that the Tigers’ fans were getting restless. Those guys just don’t seem to have any fire right now…it really surprised me how little excitement they generated. Dontrelle had a no-no with 7 walks through 5…it was very weird. And, yes, the food was really good.

Super-2′s do go to arbitration, but I don’t think Kouz is one…I may be wrong though.

  9. No seventh. He runs out of gas in a big hurry, when he goes much past 80 pitches.

  10. If Hairston stays productive all year and P-Mac contributes as well I think this will be the last year Giles will be in a padres uni if for no other reason than to make room for Headley.

  11. I don’t think Kouz is a Super-2, but I could see the Padres trying to tie up his next four years at an affordable price, buying out the arbitration years.

  12. 66 – yes. it makes for risky viewing.

  13. I think the Pads will try to tie up Kouz, Bell and Hairston (if he says productive) to 3 to 4 year deals this off season.

  14. Re:11…I don’t disagree with you. It might very well happen.

  15. Nice triple for Killer Greene right there!

  16. Wooohooo a triple. I love those!

Shocked that KG did not catch AGon and his “blazing” speed.

  17. Live in SF, work next to the park, so just came back (had to get back to the desk sometime). A treat to see the boys live. We should be winning this 8 or 9 to 1. And, man, Edmonds cannot play CF.

  18. KG hit in the one place even AGon could score from first, other than a homer.

  19. yeah baby – Khalil visits Triples Alley

  20. WTG Greene!

  21. If Edmonds continues to play a shakey CF will the pads move him to the bench?

  22. Love it from my boy. I’m thinking he may sacrifice some power this year for a higher average. He’s got a really wide stance this year that will probably negate his power, but he’s putting more balls in play.

Love that the triple was to RCF. He hit several balls to right and right-center in the Dodgers series, so maybe he’s developing a bit as a hitter.

  23. Nothing like a series against the Giants to right the ship.

  24. 122: Maybe move him to left or right.

  25. That was such a sweet at bat for KG. He made Yabu throw 8 pitches, then crushed it.

  26. Hey Phantom…If KG could put his OBP in the .340 range, I might actually get on the bandwagon!

  27. 93 – the SF color guy is Mike Krukow, the former Giants pitcher. The play-by-play guy is Duane Kuiper, and in my opinion, they’re excellent. I used to live in SF and listened to them call a lot of games. They are a lot like Matty V and Mud; irreverent, heavy users of inside jokes and recurring shtick, and excellent at analysis. Krukow especially; he does a great job breaking down pitchers and at-bats.

And yes, Krukow does kinda sound like Grant.

  28. I’m “watching” on MLB Game Day, so missed why Barrett was pulled for Bard. Did he get hurt, or was Black just pissed by his poor plate appearances?

  29. Mad Dog is throwing a helluva game today. Typical Maddux.

  30. 127: lol. He’s yet to draw a walk this year, but he seems to be having better ABs in general.

  31. Wow, great to see Maddux doing so well. And nice to see the offense come out against Cain.

But mostly it’s just GREAT to be able to watch this live now that my internet is finally up and running (I was waiting for baseball season to bother with it). My first live Padres game since dreaded 163.

  32. So, Maddux in innings 2-7, 70 pitches, 1 hit, no walks, 5 strikeouts.

  33. Josh has really came into his own this year.

  34. 127: If Khalil got his OBP up to .340 he’d be an All-Star.

  35. 134: He’s looked good in the five games or so he’s played so far. Not sure if you can call that “coming into his own” or not.

  36. 127, 135: If he got his OBP up to .340 he’d be better than the NL MVP was last year.

  37. 136: His at bats look really good so far.

  38. Re: 135…probably even more than that, he would be elite.

  39. 109: Looked good in the 7th to me. I was at the complete game last year. When Maddux has it working there is no reason to pull him. When he is “getting by” then I think you are right pull him after 80.

  40. When did Buddy completely forget how to use his bullpen? Why the hell are we throwing Meredith up by 5? Don’t we have LOW LEVERAGE GUYS for this kind of thing? Why haven’t we seen Cla during the past two close games.

    Seriously Bud, wtf?

  41. Keystone Cops in the Giants’ right field.

  42. 127…135: For KG to have a .340 OBP he would have to hit .330 or higher haha

  43. 141: Agreed… like when the bases were loaded with 1 out and we really needed a DP ground ball… and we went with Rusch???

  44. Re: 141…cause he is not an 8th inning high leverage guy right now….he needs to earn that back…or something…

    :-)

  45. 143: Maybe if he hit 8th.

  46. where did kouz get hit?

  47. Wow. What happened there?

  48. Is Kouz OK?
