Maybe on the road they can convert some of that offense into actual runs.

I guess the good thing is they’re hitting. Hopefully they can harness that hitting and get their score on.
Glad Maddux, Wolf, and Germano are facing the Giants. I don’t think we could have scheduled our rotation much better than that.
April 7, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Wow, third day game in a row. What year is this? 1908? 1938?
April 7, 2008 at 12:31 pm
1: Yup, but the opposing pitchers are Cain, Lincecum, Sanchez (?). Not an easy task.
April 7, 2008 at 12:33 pm
::sniff:: ::sniff:: I smell a few 1-0 and 2-1 games this series.
April 7, 2008 at 12:37 pm
4: as long as the Padres win those games.
April 7, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Well since it’s Matt Cain throwing today, I’m thinking it’ll be 1-0 Giants going into the 8th, with Cain throwing a no-hitter. Cain will give up one hit, will get pulled immediately, and the first reliever in will give up a homer to Scott Hairston. So nobody panic when we’re being no-hit through 7.
April 7, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Geoff,
Got my copy of the Annual (via LynchMob) and can’t get enough. Love the Dashboards and your trip to Cooperstown. Outstanding job and I like this one better than last year’s. Keep up the great work. My son continues to believe that Holliday did not touch the plate and is now sporting the T-Shirt to match!
Yesterday’s game was tough. I’m not jumping on Hoffy. We left far too many runners on base. Clutch hitting is still our problem. Looking forward to SF today and for the next few days. Hopefully our hitters can take advantage of their pitchers.
April 7, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Last year, Matt Cain had 6 starts against the Padres. He threw 41 innings with 42 k’s and a 2.41 ERA. He was 0-3, and the Giants were 0-6 in those games.
April 7, 2008 at 12:57 pm
8: Love it.
April 7, 2008 at 12:57 pm
So he’s overdue to win one or three. Great.
April 7, 2008 at 1:10 pm
RE: 10 with Benjie Molina batting 4th today I’m not sure how easy it will be for him to cah in his overdue chip today.
April 7, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Looks like Barrett is becoming Maddux’ personal catcher.
April 7, 2008 at 1:17 pm
12: Christ. Barrett’s catching. We’re totally gonna lose.
April 7, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Re: 13 does that still aply under the 08 rules?
April 7, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I hope not. We’re 0-2 so far though…
April 7, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I’m calling a homer today for both OG and Kouz. I don’t know why but I just have a feeling Cain is going to get shelled. I know he is usually lights out against us but I got a feeling. Then again I had a feeling Matt Bush would come around at shortstop so who knows what I’m worth!
April 7, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Re: gutsy call with OG
April 7, 2008 at 1:35 pm
17.
Probably way too optomistic I know, but the way he turned on that one friday night really brought me some hope that he still some pop left and it reminded me of that game winning shot he had in SF last season.
April 7, 2008 at 1:35 pm
here we go!
April 7, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Iguchi!!!
April 7, 2008 at 1:39 pm
wow tghats a quick start!
April 7, 2008 at 1:39 pm
GONZO!!!!
April 7, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Adrian!
April 7, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Um, yeah, that’s a good start for us
April 7, 2008 at 1:40 pm
AGONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
April 7, 2008 at 1:41 pm
With the SF offense, that should be enough!
April 7, 2008 at 1:42 pm
viva el hombre
(in quiet i’m-at-the-office voice)
April 7, 2008 at 1:43 pm
ESPN Gamecast made it look like Giles fly out was at the wall…true? And if so that’s to bombs hit off Cain in the first inning, a good sign indeed.
April 7, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Signs that the end is here: Maddux gives up a lead-off walk
April 7, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Not if, but when does Doc steal 2b?
April 7, 2008 at 1:48 pm
That’s how you eliminate the SB threat. Maddux already with the nice D!
April 7, 2008 at 1:49 pm
…and Edmonds is 0-for-3
April 7, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Hmmm, that’s twice Edmonds has dove and missed and the runner ends up with a double. If he pulls up, it’s a single both times.
April 7, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Getting the Giants home broadcast on XM. In between innings there was a commercial for Wells Fargo that they are going to donate $100 to some charity every time the Giants score this year …
that is going to cost them a couple thousand dollars this year.
April 7, 2008 at 1:52 pm
… and kharma instantly bites me in the ass.
April 7, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Might be a long day. When was the last time Maddux went 3-0 to a hitter twice in one inning?
April 7, 2008 at 1:53 pm
OK, now he’s gone 3-0 three times…
April 7, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Re: 28 — Yes…on the track.
April 7, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Maddux is having issues finding the plate.
April 7, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Maddux is having issues finding the plate.
April 7, 2008 at 1:53 pm
36: Make that three times.
April 7, 2008 at 1:54 pm
oops sorry about the double post
April 7, 2008 at 1:54 pm
OK, this is too wierd
April 7, 2008 at 1:56 pm
I hope Maddux’ 2nd inning is better than his 1st
April 7, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Missed that Rowand double, did Edmonds look good going after the ball? If not, is it time to switch him and Hairston?
April 7, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Watching the SF broadcast on MLB.com is different. They were just talking about Maddux being a sinkerball pitcher that, like many sinkerballers, get so excited early in the season they overthrow and lose sink.
April 7, 2008 at 1:57 pm
yeah… sure doesn’t look like Maddux out there… hopefully he can adjust and settle down.
April 7, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Schlom…no, he did not look good and came up short…but no, it is not time to switch them.
April 7, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Good ABs so far
April 7, 2008 at 2:06 pm
No one can find the plate
April 7, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Good Sac. Come on Giles
April 7, 2008 at 2:08 pm
or not
April 7, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Man OG aproach is starting to look like Nog this year, he keeps taking hacks at the first pitch….
April 7, 2008 at 2:09 pm
46: So they’re saying Maddux still hasn’t learned how to harness his stuff after what, 20 years in the big leagues?
April 7, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Ha Game cast is saying that Maddux is throwing an 83 MPH Change up and a 84 MPH Fastball, I take it by Change up they mean sinker.
April 7, 2008 at 2:14 pm
that’s better, Maddog
April 7, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Yeah, Maddux’s pitches are very difficult to classify on mlb’s gameday. Mike Fast has a good look at how Maddux’s repertoire appears on that system. He throws primarily a 2 seam fastball, a cutter, and a changeup all clustered from 88 to 80 mph, and mixes in an occasional slider at around those velocities too.

April 7, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Well, Iguchi is looking like a good signing. And Gonzo follows it up with another knock. Come on Kouz
April 7, 2008 at 2:19 pm
YES
April 7, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Come on, get that key hit!!!
April 7, 2008 at 2:20 pm
woohoo station to station baseball paysoff
April 7, 2008 at 2:21 pm
There we go. Good job Edmonds. Keep the train moving!
April 7, 2008 at 2:21 pm
c’mon KG. let’s put this game out of reach
April 7, 2008 at 2:23 pm
nice sac KG
April 7, 2008 at 2:24 pm
nice D leads to another run
April 7, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Has anyone else noticed that the new MLB.TV premium 1.2M is delayed about 10-20 seconds from the real broadcast??
April 7, 2008 at 2:24 pm
we’ll take the runs in any way shape or form. c’mon Barrett.
April 7, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Looks like neither pitcher will be in the game come the 6th inning
April 7, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Hopefully, that should be enough with the Giants’ offense.
April 7, 2008 at 2:34 pm
is Maddux going to come inside to Rowand. outside, outside, outside…
April 7, 2008 at 2:35 pm
This umps zone is tiny for both pitchers. I guess it’s fair, but it makes for a long game.
April 7, 2008 at 2:35 pm
And a strikeout on the lower inner half
April 7, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Wow, that’s some really awful baserunning by OG. The play’s in front of him, no excuse for getting double off.
April 7, 2008 at 2:41 pm
did anyone see the double play, or was brian brain-farting for the second day in a row?
April 7, 2008 at 2:42 pm
2 days, 2 base running mistakes for Giles. What is going on with this veteran?
April 7, 2008 at 2:44 pm
75: Dunno, but I’m getting pretty tired of it. That and his hacking first-pitch yesterday really torqued me off.
April 7, 2008 at 2:52 pm
is this the last year of his contract? if it is, do the padres take a chance of him accepting arb rather than testing the market? The team has to offer arb to get compensatory draft picks right?
At least that is 10 mil they have to spend next year…
April 7, 2008 at 2:53 pm
77: He has an option for next year ($10 mil range) with a buy-out ($3 mil range).
April 7, 2008 at 2:54 pm
77. They have a 3M buy out, if they don’t pick up his option.
April 7, 2008 at 2:55 pm
maddux has definitely settled in. 23 pitches in the first, 38 in 2 through 4. please don’t let me jinx him.
April 7, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Thanks Field39 and OkinawaPadres.
And nice AB by Kouz
April 7, 2008 at 2:58 pm
78, 79. If the Padres do the buyout and OG becomes a FA, I assume the arbitration rules don’t apply and the Pads don’t get any draft picks?
April 7, 2008 at 2:59 pm
OK, pull Cain. He’s killing my fantasy team
April 7, 2008 at 2:59 pm
c’mon Hairston, put the game out of reach.
April 7, 2008 at 2:59 pm
82: No idea on that one
April 7, 2008 at 3:00 pm
okay, c’mon Barrett.
April 7, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Well, that’s what Bochy was hoping for.
April 7, 2008 at 3:03 pm
grrrr
April 7, 2008 at 3:04 pm
82: No, I believe the Padres can still offer him arbitration and could still negotiate with him for a new deal even after buying out his old one. If they don’t want him back, though, they probably wouldn’t offer him arbitration because if he accepted, arbitration would guarantee him a salary that when added to the buyout would be greater than the original $10 million.
April 7, 2008 at 3:04 pm
that was craptastic.
April 7, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Darn you, Barrett.
April 7, 2008 at 3:07 pm
89. thx, Ben B.
with arbitration, there is still the rule about not reducing a player’s salary by over 20% correct?
April 7, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Anyone else watching the Giants’ broadcast? Their color guy sure sounds a lot like Mudcat Grant.
April 7, 2008 at 3:10 pm
5 strikeouts! Maddux esta en fuego! Or the Giants’ hitters aren’t very good.
April 7, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Does Buddy bat for Maddux or let him go one more? He’s due up first.
April 7, 2008 at 3:11 pm
A couple of good at bats an intentional walk, then he hits into a double play on the first pitch. Just Barrett being Barrett.
April 7, 2008 at 3:11 pm
92: Yep, that’s correct. That’s why the Cubs non-tendered Prior instead of going to arbitration with him.
April 7, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Maddux has recovered nicely from a rough start. 50 pitches for innings 2-5 with one hit and no walks.
April 7, 2008 at 3:14 pm
97: Accounting for the buyout, the Padres would have 7 mil to use for next year. That may be earmarked for Kouz though - at least a good portion of it.
April 7, 2008 at 3:17 pm
99: Most likely they wont bring Maddux back either so thats another 10 million.
April 7, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Re: 99 - Are you saying the Kouz is a “Super-2″ and eligible for arbitration after this season? I think he is under Padres control for another year, so any contract extension stuff would probably not start until 2010…I think.
April 7, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Depending on what the various minor league Pad pitchers do, I could see bringing Maddux back for another 200 innings of 100 OPS+. In today’s market, that’s valuable.
April 7, 2008 at 3:20 pm
95: Definitely. He looks good, has only given up 1 run and isnt exactly facing a terrifying line-up. I’d rather Maddux be out there instead of our ‘pen anyway.
April 7, 2008 at 3:21 pm
102: I dont think he comes back, but if he does I dont think its for 10 million, most would argue he was overpaid this year.
April 7, 2008 at 3:22 pm
CM, how was the game at Comerica? Sounds like a good weekend. Those food, hmmm.
Super-2 goes to arbitration, right?
April 7, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Quick work there… does Maddux pitch the 7th?
April 7, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Maddux has 13 groundouts against 0 fly outs. He’s given up three balls in the air all game: the bloop double to Rowand, the single to Molina, and the line drive to Velez that he made the play on.
April 7, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Thanks…Comerica was fun, but you could see that the Tigers’ fans were getting restless. Those guys just don’t seem to have any fire right now…it really surprised me how little excitement they generated. Dontrelle had a no-no with 7 walks through 5…it was very weird. And, yes, the food was really good.
Super-2’s do go to arbitration, but I don’t think Kouz is one…I may be wrong though.
April 7, 2008 at 3:26 pm
No seventh. He runs out of gas in a big hurry, when he goes much past 80 pitches.
April 7, 2008 at 3:26 pm
If Hairston stays productive all year and P-Mac contributes as well I think this will be the last year Giles will be in a padres uni if for no other reason than to make room for Headley.
April 7, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I don’t think Kouz is a Super-2, but I could see the Padres trying to tie up his next four years at an affordable price, buying out the arbitration years.
April 7, 2008 at 3:30 pm
