The Padres were outscored, 23-22, over their opening homestand despite outhitting the opposition by a wide margin:

I guess the good thing is they’re hitting. Hopefully they can harness that hitting and get their score on.

Glad Maddux, Wolf, and Germano are facing the Giants. I don’t think we could have scheduled our rotation much better than that.

Well since it’s Matt Cain throwing today, I’m thinking it’ll be 1-0 Giants going into the 8th, with Cain throwing a no-hitter. Cain will give up one hit, will get pulled immediately, and the first reliever in will give up a homer to Scott Hairston. So nobody panic when we’re being no-hit through 7.

    Geoff,

Got my copy of the Annual (via LynchMob) and can’t get enough. Love the Dashboards and your trip to Cooperstown. Outstanding job and I like this one better than last year’s. Keep up the great work. My son continues to believe that Holliday did not touch the plate and is now sporting the T-Shirt to match!

Yesterday’s game was tough. I’m not jumping on Hoffy. We left far too many runners on base. Clutch hitting is still our problem. Looking forward to SF today and for the next few days. Hopefully our hitters can take advantage of their pitchers.

Last year, Matt Cain had 6 starts against the Padres. He threw 41 innings with 42 k’s and a 2.41 ERA. He was 0-3, and the Giants were 0-6 in those games.

I’m calling a homer today for both OG and Kouz. I don’t know why but I just have a feeling Cain is going to get shelled. I know he is usually lights out against us but I got a feeling. Then again I had a feeling Matt Bush would come around at shortstop so who knows what I’m worth!

Yeah, Maddux’s pitches are very difficult to classify on mlb’s gameday. Mike Fast has a good look at how Maddux’s repertoire appears on that system. He throws primarily a 2 seam fastball, a cutter, and a changeup all clustered from 88 to 80 mph, and mixes in an occasional slider at around those velocities too.

If they don’t want him back, though, they probably wouldn’t offer him arbitration because if he accepted, arbitration would guarantee him a salary that when added to the buyout would be greater than the original $10 million.

  107. Ben B.

Maddux has 13 groundouts against 0 fly outs. He’s given up three balls in the air all game: the bloop double to Rowand, the single to Molina, and the line drive to Velez that he made the play on.

  108. Posted April 7, 2008 at 3:24 pm | Permalink

Thanks…Comerica was fun, but you could see that the Tigers’ fans were getting restless. Those guys just don’t seem to have any fire right now…it really surprised me how little excitement they generated. Dontrelle had a no-no with 7 walks through 5…it was very weird. And, yes, the food was really good.

Super-2’s do go to arbitration, but I don’t think Kouz is one…I may be wrong though.

Love it from my boy. I’m thinking he may sacrifice some power this year for a higher average. He’s got a really wide stance this year that will probably negate his power, but he’s putting more balls in play.

Love that the triple was to RCF. He hit several balls to right and right-center in the Dodgers series, so maybe he’s developing a bit as a hitter.

93 – the SF color guy is Mike Krukow, the former Giants pitcher. The play-by-play guy is Duane Kuiper, and in my opinion, they’re excellent. I used to live in SF and listened to them call a lot of games. They are a lot like Matty V and Mud; irreverent, heavy users of inside jokes and recurring shtick, and excellent at analysis. Krukow especially; he does a great job breaking down pitchers and at-bats.

And yes, Krukow does kinda sound like Grant.

I’m “watching” on MLB Game Day, so missed why Barrett was pulled for Bard. Did he get hurt, or was Black just pissed by his poor plate appearances?

Wow, great to see Maddux doing so well. And nice to see the offense come out against Cain.

But mostly it’s just GREAT to be able to watch this live now that my internet is finally up and running (I was waiting for baseball season to bother with it). My first live Padres game since dreaded 163.

on Jeter: Right, I’ve watched him all my life (living in NY) and I am certainly no scout, but I’ve never been overly impressed. I don’t know, if I had no clue about the advanced fielding stats, I’d probably figure he was a few runs below average. I could even see an argument that he’s decent; average(ish). I just can’t see how so many people think he’s a gold glove caliber guy.

I’d like to see Guevara up to take Gonzalez’s or Ledezma’s place as the mop up guy of choice. I don’t think it’ll be very long before Ledezma and Gonzalez are gone and replaced by Kevin Cameron and Guevara.

  192. David Coonce
    Posted April 8, 2008 at 6:29 am | Permalink

Let’s enjoy Morton while he’s up – he’s gotta be the biggest catcher I’ve ever seen in my life. He looks like an NFL center. Not much of a prospect, but an interesting guy.

Reading through these comments about Greene’s OBP – check out his road stats from last year. If he played anywhere but SD he would already be an All-Star. Petco kills everybody, but it REALLY kills Greene. His road numbers last year were 290/340/510. That, coupled with his defense, is an All-Star shortstop.

Also, Gonzalez is just a mop-up guy, so not sure why all the clamoring about him. Not sure that there’s a better option out there. Cameron throws hard but has zero control, and last year was helped out greatly by the fact that he only pitched in a close or tied game four times. I wouldn’t fret too much about the mop-up guy – they’re all fungible pieces.
