The Padres were outscored, 23-22, over their opening homestand despite outhitting the opposition by a wide margin:

Statistics are courtesy of ESPN and are through games of April 6, 2008.

Maybe on the road they can convert some of that offense into actual runs.

  1. Good Sac. Come on Giles

  2. or not

  3. Man OG aproach is starting to look like Nog this year, he keeps taking hacks at the first pitch….

  4. 46: So they’re saying Maddux still hasn’t learned how to harness his stuff after what, 20 years in the big leagues?

  5. Ha Game cast is saying that Maddux is throwing an 83 MPH Change up and a 84 MPH Fastball, I take it by Change up they mean sinker.

  6. that’s better, Maddog

  7. Yeah, Maddux’s pitches are very difficult to classify on mlb’s gameday. Mike Fast has a good look at how Maddux’s repertoire appears on that system. He throws primarily a 2 seam fastball, a cutter, and a changeup all clustered from 88 to 80 mph, and mixes in an occasional slider at around those velocities too.

  8. Well, Iguchi is looking like a good signing. And Gonzo follows it up with another knock. Come on Kouz

  9. YES

  10. Come on, get that key hit!!!

  11. woohoo station to station baseball paysoff

  12. There we go. Good job Edmonds. Keep the train moving!

  13. c’mon KG. let’s put this game out of reach

  14. nice sac KG

  15. nice D leads to another run

  16. Has anyone else noticed that the new MLB.TV premium 1.2M is delayed about 10-20 seconds from the real broadcast??

  17. we’ll take the runs in any way shape or form. c’mon Barrett.

  18. Looks like neither pitcher will be in the game come the 6th inning

  19. Hopefully, that should be enough with the Giants’ offense.

  20. is Maddux going to come inside to Rowand. outside, outside, outside…

  21. This umps zone is tiny for both pitchers. I guess it’s fair, but it makes for a long game.

  22. And a strikeout on the lower inner half

  23. Wow, that’s some really awful baserunning by OG. The play’s in front of him, no excuse for getting double off.

  24. did anyone see the double play, or was brian brain-farting for the second day in a row?

  25. 2 days, 2 base running mistakes for Giles. What is going on with this veteran?

  26. 75: Dunno, but I’m getting pretty tired of it. That and his hacking first-pitch yesterday really torqued me off.

  27. is this the last year of his contract? if it is, do the padres take a chance of him accepting arb rather than testing the market? The team has to offer arb to get compensatory draft picks right?

At least that is 10 mil they have to spend next year…

  28. 77: He has an option for next year ($10 mil range) with a buy-out ($3 mil range).

  29. 77. They have a 3M buy out, if they don’t pick up his option.

  30. maddux has definitely settled in. 23 pitches in the first, 38 in 2 through 4. please don’t let me jinx him.

  31. Thanks Field39 and OkinawaPadres.

    And nice AB by Kouz

  32. 78, 79. If the Padres do the buyout and OG becomes a FA, I assume the arbitration rules don’t apply and the Pads don’t get any draft picks?

  33. OK, pull Cain. He’s killing my fantasy team ;-)

  34. c’mon Hairston, put the game out of reach.

  35. 82: No idea on that one

  36. okay, c’mon Barrett.

  37. Well, that’s what Bochy was hoping for.

  38. grrrr

  39. 82: No, I believe the Padres can still offer him arbitration and could still negotiate with him for a new deal even after buying out his old one. If they don’t want him back, though, they probably wouldn’t offer him arbitration because if he accepted, arbitration would guarantee him a salary that when added to the buyout would be greater than the original $10 million.

  40. that was craptastic.

  41. Darn you, Barrett.

  42. 89. thx, Ben B.
with arbitration, there is still the rule about not reducing a player’s salary by over 20% correct?

  43. Anyone else watching the Giants’ broadcast? Their color guy sure sounds a lot like Mudcat Grant.

  44. 5 strikeouts! Maddux esta en fuego! Or the Giants’ hitters aren’t very good.

  45. Does Buddy bat for Maddux or let him go one more? He’s due up first.

  46. A couple of good at bats an intentional walk, then he hits into a double play on the first pitch. Just Barrett being Barrett.

  47. 92: Yep, that’s correct. That’s why the Cubs non-tendered Prior instead of going to arbitration with him.

  48. Maddux has recovered nicely from a rough start. 50 pitches for innings 2-5 with one hit and no walks.

  49. 97: Accounting for the buyout, the Padres would have 7 mil to use for next year. That may be earmarked for Kouz though – at least a good portion of it.

  50. 99: Most likely they wont bring Maddux back either so thats another 10 million.
