That was a fun one Thursday night, eh? I'd make a crack about how it's only the Giants, but seeing as how we have virtually no chance of overtaking them for fourth place, that hardly seems appropriate. Seriously, though, it's cool to see a bunch of these kids that I watched at Elsinore come up here and have some success. Matt Antonelli knocked three hits and drew a walk (and only a fine play by Omar Vizquel kept him from reaching base a fifth time), Drew Macias collected his first big-league hit (a homer off Matt Cain, no less), and Josh Geer tossed a gem. Padres (21-34) @ Giants (23-31) Greg Maddux vs Matt Cain 7:15 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 185 MLB, B-R The Padres have moved into fourth place in the NL West, a half game ahead of the defending league champion Colorado Rockies. The Diamondbacks are the only team in the division with a record better than .500, and they're 10-16 this month. Despite the Pads' extreme ineptitude early on, they're still not out of this race. They need to start playing better, of course, but things could be worse. Be excellent to one another. Go Padres!

Thanks to reader Lance for hooking us up with seats two rows behind the visitors dugout on Wednesday night. First time I've been anywhere near that close at Petco Park, and it's a whole different experience. For a guy like me who lives in nosebleed, just, wow. Also, belated welcome to all the folks at Gaslamp Ball who came over and hung with us while GLB was unavailable. Good to see so many familiar names as I browsed through the IGD.The national story will be that Trevor Hoffman blew a save. Hooray for the media. Here are some other stories that won't get as much play: Brian Giles struck out ...
