  1. Day game at home = not great for Peavy

All 5 of Peavy’s losses this year have come at petco, 3 of witch were during day games.

  2. Man I hate Peavy in day games. It would be nice if he could come out and get back on track with CY on the DL. A dominating performance by Peavy might do wonders for this team.

  3. Peavy’s got to be the stopper here. We’ve got to get this thing going again. Who starts in RF today — Hairston or Machowiak? Here’s hoping it’s the latter!

  4. Re: 3 why not NOG?

  5. Re: 4 I meant OG

  6. I wish GY would get back. I’m thinking we need a “step back away from the cliff” entries.

  7. Re: 6 I just keep telling myself they did the same thing last year, and they still won the division, but I’m not sure how much longer I can keep believing it.

  8. 5.

He hurt his ankle pretty bad last night making a great play. It looked to me like his knees took some pain also so it wouldn’t surprise me if he was down for a game or 2. I think the question is who plays left because Bradley will probably move over the right. I think it will probably be Mackowiak since Petit is a righty. I think this might make KT look good for strengthening his bench a day before Giles goes down. Hopefully it works out.

How good does the Milton Bradley aquisition look? That guy is a freaking man and has been the single bright spot on this roster for the last few games. I am almost to the point where I think they may want to start looking into some type of 2 or 3 year extension for the guy. It’s probably a little too early for that right now but if he keeps playing like this you would think that we would almost have to look into it right? He is from LA so he would be close to home. He hates the Dodgers and he would get to play them 19 times a year. San Diego is a low key market and he wouldn’t be under a microscope. I’m just saying I could see him him wanting to work something out here and I can definitely see the Padres wanting to look into it.

  9. 2: Was Jake not dominaing his last time out?

  10. Re: 9 he was but Jake has not done well at home day games this year, but then again not good for jake is 7 IP and 3 ER with 7 SO.

  11. 10: Exactly, i wouldnt say he has been bad. We just need to score the runs. Its a day game, we normally put up a good amount of runs. I dont know why they arent doing it for Jake in day games. His day game numbers really arent all that bad 2.68 ERA, he just isnt getting any support so he is 4-3 in day games this year

  12. I never said jake was doing bad during day home games I just said he was not doing great (which he is in every other setting) during day home games.

his home ERA is 3.36 while his away ERA is 0.98, I would say that there is a noticeable difference there.

  13. 8: He is such a dynamic player when he’s hungry (if not a Jose Reyes-level dynamo). You have to think the Pads are/will be thinking of him as possible CFer next year. Is he good enough for center? I dunno but I remember when the Dodgers signed JD Drew there was some question of who would play center or right and Drew went to right, IIRC.

  14. Re: 8 I could see the Pads working out a 1 year deal with Bradley to play CF next year, I dont see either side wanting to go over 1 year though.

  15. it would be nice to score a few f’ing runs for jake today…that would be super.

    and no brocail today thanks

  16. 13.

Yeah I don’t know how great he would bein center (I am still convinced the Padres are going to kick the tires on Eric Byrnes) but he could probably play it pretty decently. He is probably Cammy’s back up in cf now so it’s definitely an option.

  17. Re: 16 I agree’d with you on Bynres untill Bradley started playing well, I dont think the Padres will go after Bynres now because he will want a 3-5 year contract (which he will be able to get with another team), where I think they will be able to get Bradley to sign a 1 year “hey let me prove to everybody I can play a full year without a blowup” deal. The Padres will never commit to more years than they have to because the last few long term deals they have done have blown up in thier face (with the exception of Trevor).

  18. 16: Eric Byrnes thinks he deserves Gary Matthews Jr money, aka Stupid Money.

Unless the Padres internal defensive metrics show him to be a terrific CF, they’re not going to sink 15-20% of their payroll into a single player coming off a career year.

  19. wow lets call up hillenbrand haha

hes got 4 games and hes 1 for 15(only a single) thats ballin!

    POR PCL .067 4 15 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 .067 .067 .133

  20. 9.

Yes he was dominant the last time out but the last few starts before that not so much. If he can come out and put together another Jake-Like performance I think it would go a long way. Since the AS break he has not been sharp and CY has basically been our ace. With CY out Jake needs to step back up and take this team over. Pitching is going to carry this team and if we are going to go anywhere Jake is going to have to be a big part of it.

  21. Padres Prospect Report

You will not see the sexy July 31st blockbuster trade. But the reality is, the Padres made one of those too, they just did it two weeks early (which apparently doesn’t count among Padre faithful). Since joining the Padres Milton is hitting .371/.463/.657.

    Commentary:

The Texas League San Antonio Missions were the first Padre organization team in clubhouse tonight and they picked up a “W.” Every other team lost…

  22. 18.

You are probably right but Byrnes loves is here and is not going to get Mathews money. Once he is out on the market for a while he might have a change of heart.

  23. Pete Laforest is rediculous!

  24. Byrens wont get Gary Matthews Jr Money because the CF market will be so saturated but I could see a team like the Chi or SF giving him 4years/$40 mil to play RF for them. Here is where I think the CF will fall:

    Hunter – NYY 5y/$85
    Jones – Bos 5y/$80
    Cameron – Atl 3y/$33
    Rowand – CWS 5y/65

  25. 24.

That’s pretty much Gary Matthews money minus a year. I expect Hunter to pull about that maybe more but I honestly have no idea what to think with Jones. Cammy is probably a good bet too but I think you are way off on Rowand.

  26. Another interesting tidbit (Peter, you may have mentioned this — feel free to flog me if so) for tonight is that Robert Woodard is making his first start for Portland.

Woodard pitched pretty well in the College World Series for North Carolina, and after only a few outings at Eugene, he’s on the bump tonight for the Beavers against Nashville. That will be a game on which to keep an eye.

  27. 22, 24: Why wouldn’t he get Matthews money? A lot of teams want CF and he’s having a better 2007 than Matthews’s 2006.

The top free agent CF last year were:

    Edmonds
    Matthews
    Pierre
    Roberts

    Next year’s class is:

    Eric Byrnes ARZ
    Mike Cameron SD
    Kosuke Fukudome, Chunichi, Japan
    Torii Hunter MIN
    Andruw Jones ATL
    Aaron Rowand PHI

A lot of teams are going to be looking for CF.

I dropped players in both years who aren’t top-end, which includes Bradley, Erstad, etc. If Juan Pierre and Gary Matthews got 9-10M per, Eric Byrnes sure can.

  28. who will be looking for a CF in the offseason with money to burn? CWS, Bos, NYY, Atl, and Balt. I dont even think Byrens will be playing CF next year.

GMJ and Peire got big money deals becuse they were the best two CF available on the open market Byrnes is 5th maybe sixth this season.

  29. There’s something I don’t like about Byrnes. Yeah he plays hard but I think some of that is false hustle, like diving into first when there wasn’t even a play. And then there’s boneheaded plays like trying to stretch a routine single into a double. I’d rather resign Cameron or break the bank for Jones.

  30. No reason for the Pads to panic yet. Last year they actually dipped beneath .500 after the 120 game mark, though they will need more than 88 wins this year to win the Division. They need to get going sure, but they still have time to right the ship.

  31. OT: Mets called up B-Law

  32. 29.

I totally agree with you on the false hustle thing. He basically admitted it yesterday on the radio. He was talking about playing at Yankee Stadium and he mis-read a fly ball. Once he started running for it he said he realized he wasn’t goin to get to it but because he had mis-read it off the bat he was just going to dive for it anyways and he missed catching the ball by a yard or two.

He annoys me to no end!

  33. 28: Lots of teams have money to burn. Baseball’s rolling in cash now.

You listed 5 teams on your own, with 6 top free agents. More teams than that will be looking for CF.

The Yankees may decide to trade Damon and grab someone else.

Philly might want Rowand back, or a big name instead of using Victorino.

SF now knows what SD knows, that Roberts is stretched in CF. If they don’t resign Bonds they have 20M to spend.

Texas has a hole there and isn’t afraid to spend.

Some scouts think Pence is stretched at CF in Houston, and they have all that money they’re not paying Pettite and Clemens
    anymore.

Baltimore can usually be counted on to spend on free agents, even if unwisely, and they’re currently using Cory Patterson.

Some of those teams will go with second-tier guys, some may fill the spot from within, but there are still more teams in need than there are top free agents.

  34. 29.

I’m totally with you there. I can’t stand Byrnes.

He’s like some kind of pathetic clown.

  35. I dont see him going to SF because with bonds finaly being gone I think they are going to go with a youth movement and they just traded for a young CF.

I think philly will go with Victorino because they know Rowand is not worth big money and they are going to save teh cash to sign Howard to a long term deal.

I didnt really think of the rangers but they refused to give GMJ 5y/$50 so I cant see them giving Byrens that kind of money.

The astros are not hurting for OF between Pence, Lee and Scott, they also have to many other holes to fill in the IF and BP.

I don’t see Byrens making a return to Balt after the debacle a few years ago.

  36. 35: None of those teams have to give Byrnes the money. They’re going to be bidding on the other free agent CF, though. There’s more demand than there is supply.

  37. Well part of my point was that I dont think Philly, or Houston will be looking for a CF.

  38. Speaking of Damon and the Yankees, do yuo guys think there is any shot of the Padres trading for Damon if the Yankees take over at least half of his contract?

  39. 38.

He might be cool in left. But if they were not picking up a ton of money HELL NO!

  40. well no way would the Pads do it if the yanks didnt pick up atleast 7 of the 13 mil, but he would only be signed though 09, he can play CF and lead off if he stays healthy.

  41. I seem to recall a knock on Byrnes from his days as an Athletic–his playmaking ability is more about hustle than being a polished, expert route-taker.

  42. 40.

I wouldn’t trust him to play center. I think that’s why the Yanks are thinking about moving him. He would probably be above average left fielder though. $5 mil a year through 2009 might be cool.

  43. 37: And they might not be, but then again, they might. Even if you take them out of the equation, there are a lot of teams looking for CF, and very few teams can legitimately say they can’t afford one. Might not want to pay one (us), but they can afford to if they wanted.

  44. Do you think the Pads would look to get rid of Barrett?

  45. Re: 43 thats what I meant “want” to afford one I know every team can afford one.

Re: 44 Barrett is gone at the end of the season (hello draft pick).

  46. As someone who lives in Oakland, I remember Byrnes in CF very well. He took bad routes but made a lot of awesome catches. He threw his body all over the field, which resulted in him consistently being banged up and slumping after hot starts. He’s much better suited to LF, where he can defer to the CF and not wear himself out so much.

Bradley has in my experience always been a good but not great centerfielder. I’d be happy to have him there since he might be considerably cheaper than those other guys, but I also wouldn’t mind if the Padres actually spent some money on two good outfielders next year, whoever they happened to be.

  48. I wouldn’t suprise me if the Pads do a half ass job this off season patching the holes that they have (LF, CF, 2B, SP), selling at the deadline next year and calling up all the top guys in Aug.

  49. Sorry for the duplicate post, the first one can be deleted!

  50. Mackowiak is leading off and starting in right. Bard gets the start behind the plate, NOG at second, and Ensberg at third.
