first pitch: 6:40 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: David Wells (0-1, 5.06 ERA) vs Randy Johnson (0-0, –)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
David Wells? Randy Johnson? I think Messrs. Flansburgh and Linnell said it best:
You’re older than you’ve ever been.
And now you’re even older.
And now you’re even older.
And now you’re even older.
You’re older than you’ve ever been.
And now you’re even older.
And now you’re older still.
Johnson makes his first start since returning to the Diamondbacks. Unfortunately he’s had tremendous success against just about everyone on the current Padres roster. Combined, they’re batting just .124/.154/.301 against Johnson in 117 plate appearances. Brian Giles and Mike Cameron account for 60 of those, and it ain’t pretty — they have five hits and 30 strikeouts between them.
The good news? I dunno, I was hoping you might have some.
… and we shoulda PH’d for him when we had an opportunity
Oy, get him out of there.
His last outing was fantastic, its tough to see him getting touched up so bad.
100: Agreed. He’s a helluva #5
Heath Bell warming up in the forest
Holy cow, back to back triples?
Sounds like something we will read too much about in the paper tomorrow
So we’re ok paying 5M+ for a below average starter just because he’s our worst one?
How much worse would Mike Thompson have been?
105: Let’s hope not. We have four innings of AZ bullpen coming up that we should be able to pound.
way to go Marcus
Nice play by NOG to end an ugly inning.
Thank god for NOG. His D is far superior to Barfield’s.
Thru 5 …
Pitches-strikes – D Wells 79-49; Ra Johnson 97-53.
Ground balls-fly balls – D Wells 6-6; Ra Johnson 3-5.
Batters faced – D Wells 23; Ra Johnson 27.
… and I vote that Wells is now done for the evening …
111 : all in favor of the bull pen raise your hands
Oh how I love other team’s bll pens .. YEAH NOG
106 … what Mike Thompson are you talking about? This Mike Thompson … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7764 … that’s a 7.84 ERA there fella … OK, so Wells sits at 6.00 … I’m willing to (friendly) wager that Wells ends the season at under 6.00 …
#112: Absolutely. If you’re going to carry seven guys in the bullpen, you might as well use them.
115 : they are rested .. with the day off yesterday
So then aren’t you also willing to wager Thompson would end at lower then 7.84?
117 : I would not exchange Wells for Thompson … but I am thinking they will both lower their ERA’s … I still like Thompson better as long relief .. once he gets his form back
Seriously though Thompson was kind of a joke, but somebody like Kip Wells or Randy Wolf would certainly been a big improvement.
None of these pitchers coming off an injury was interested in pitching at Petco, with this bullpen?
A-Gon is swinging the bat very well tonight.
Medders K’s/Walks 8/7
I think that everyone is going to want to pitch for the Padres after this season. Boomer can still get a win after coughing up 5 runs in 5 innings. People will love that.
King Adrian is having a brilliant nite.
96 … in 2006, the “park factor” at Chase was pretty near Coors … http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor?season=2006 … and it’s lookin’ that way tonight!
Niiccee.
And now the Snakes have forgotten how to play baseball.
OMG KHALIL
Little league rocks!
KG is on fire!
Is that an error or a hit?
re: 125
He is seeing the ball real well.
inside the park error
And Kouz struggles on…
127 .. Double , RBI and a 2 base error
117 … well, M Thompson’s ERA at AAA is 22.50 … David Wells is better …
119 … 2 good questions … how much did they sign for? When they signed, did you think they were going to be better in 2007 than Wells? Did signing them cost any draft picks?
Khalil’s 4 for 4 tonite, simply beautiful.
Can somebody describe the Greene hit for those of us in flyoverland?
Thanks
134 – baseballdirect.com says …
K.Greene singled to left, Ad.Gonzalez scored. Advance on throw, K.Greene to second. On error by pitcher Medders, K.Greene scored.
… I’d appreciate an eye-witness report also.
Beautiful breaking ball by Bell to get Quentin fishing.
#134: Khalil hit a sinking line drive to left that Byrnes trapped. Byrnes threw to the plate; Medders (!) cut off the throw and tried to nail Khalil at second, but the ball sailed into right-center, allowing Khalil to score.
134: line drive to left .. fielded by Byrnes .. throw to home .. no play at home fielded by Medderrs with a throw to 2nd that went to the outfield …. KG scored from 2nd
It’s certainly arguable that the ball would have nailed the runner at home, too. But Medders decided that major league baseball wasn’t nearly as fun as little league, hence Khalil plating himself.
119 … Kip Wells didn’t make it out of the 5th tonight … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270424124
I was hoping Bud would use Robles before Blum.
KG’s having a day, but what a line by El Hombre! 2 ABs; 3 Runs; 2 Hits (1 HR, 1 GRDB); 3 RBIS; 1 BB,,,,, WOW!
well done Man Bo … good eye .. nice at bat
By the way, why the hell is Blum in the game?
Here’s hoping that non-existent Giants bullpen can hold up the lead.
123 : thanks for the link … did not realize it was so much like Coors … maybe because the Padres have a history of not playing well at the BOB /Chase
And Blum reinforces his status as the super sub.
Thanks, 137/8. Gameday is vague.
Nice inning by Bell. We needed it. I have never seen a game in which the opposing team got 3 two-out triples. Sheesh.
Gotta love Black’s man-crush on Blum – he’s actually hitting 40 points lower than Kouz, but gets the call anyway.
Cameron and Kouzmanoff are struggling, but five regulars are really hitting.
At this juncture, who gets player of the game? Khalil or King Adrian?
144 … what makes you think the Gi’nts will need the pen? Matt Morris is healthy this year (I heard he pitched with a broken rib last year) … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270424119
