World Series IGD: Astros @ White Sox, Game 1

first pitch: 4:30 p.m., PT
television: Fox
matchup: Roger Clemens (13-8, 1.87 ERA) vs Jose Contreras (15-7, 3.61 ERA)
preview: MLB.com

Feels weird doing one of these without the Padres in it, but if you’re watching the game and you want to hang out and chat, please feel free. I’m really looking forward to what should be some great pitching matchups. I can only imagine how folks in Chicago and Houston must feel. Here’s hoping for an outstanding series.

  1. well geoff,

i can’t speak for chi-town, but here in houston, the whole town astro crazy!!!

of all the teams we’ve had who reached the postseason, this one looks like the least likely to succeed.

i like writing the WS scores in my ASTROS SCOREBOOK 2005, yes i do…

    lisa

  2. I believe it, Lisa. I remember what it was like here in ’98 (and ’94 for the Chargers). Best of luck, and whatever the outcome, enjoy the ride!

  3. That’s some real cheesy music they’re playing during introductions. Nice to see Bagwell getting the start at DH.

  4. If they’re going to do that to the Star-Spangled Banner, they just shouldn’t sing it. Who else could they have gotten from Chicago – Peter Cetera? Richard Marx? Trent Reznor?

  5. From chicago they could have gotten Konye West, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Billy (Cub fan though) Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins… a little hipper than Richard Marx and Peter Cetera. Although those guys are about at the right dork level for a national sports event.

  6. Thanks, tbone. Didn’t realize Tweedy was from Chicago. Should’ve rememebered Corgan. Yeah, Marx and Cetera were sort of jokes. I grew up in an era where bands like REO Speedwagon were the rage.

Nice at-bat by Dye homering in the first. As someone who doesn’t follow the AL much, I was shocked to find out he hit 31 bombs this year.

  7. Good baserunning by Carl Everett to steal a run. Anyone expect the score to be 3-1 in the second?

  8. Two things:

    1. What’s up with all the runs?
    2. Suggestions for future National Anthem singers in Chicago: Kurt Elling, Buddy Guy.

  9. Two questions:

    1. How do the Astros let Lamb hit against Cotts?
    2. How do the Angels release Jenks? Seems like just about any team in either league could use a guy like that.

  10. Jenks was designated for assignment to make room for Kendry Morales. Since he was recovering from a serious injury(pin in the elbow) they figured no one would claim him. White Sox claimed him either the same day or the next day..something like that anyway. I dont think the Angels meant to give up on Jenks, just an error in judgement.

  11. Yeah, Kurt Elling would be great. With a big band. Not gonna happen but that would be great.

  12. Wasn’t it technically bad baserunning and worse fielding that allowed Everett to score? He was too far off third (bad baserunning) and Mike Lamb went to second instead of third where they could have had Everett in a run down and avoided letting a run score while still recording a damn out (bad fielding).

  13. Dear who ever it concerns,

I am very happy that the white sox finally won the World Series. If u could send me the scores to all the World Series game A.S.A.P that would be great!!
    GO CHICAGO WHITE SOX!! :)

    Yors truly Cody
