Padres vs Braves 7:15 p.m. PT Channel 4SD, DIRECTV 737 AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 189 MLB, B-R We had a great time at the Baseball Prospectus event Friday night. Big thanks to Dave Pease and Joe Sheehan for organizing, the Padres for hosting, and of course Paul DePodesta for being incredibly generous with his time. I'm sworn under threat of Very Nasty Things, Indeed (TM) not to repeat what was said, but I think it's safe to note that DePo referenced Schopenhauer, Thomas Paine, and Malcolm Gladwell in his talk. He also answered all of our questions with patience, thoughtfulness, and as much candor as his position permits. Several Ducksnorters made it ...

Series Preview: Joe Aiello Talks Cubs

Monday, May 12, 2008
by Geoff Young
With the Padres headed to Chicago for a four-game series, I decided to check in with Joe Aiello of View from the Bleachers for the latest info on the Cubs. We now turn the blog over to Joe... Ducksnorts: The Cubs have gotten off to a terrific start and have a very balanced attack. Can they sustain this level of play and, in the suddenly revitalized NL Central, will it be enough for a return trip to the post-season? Aiello: I think they can. I'm not just saying that as a fan of the team. If you look around the NL, everyone is beatable. When the Mets traded for [Johan] Santana, everyone ...

Series Preview: Rox Girl Talks Rockies

Tuesday, April 15, 2008
by Geoff Young
The Padres and Rockies hook up for the first time since that fateful Game 163 in Denver last October. I recently had a chance to chat with Rox Girl of the excellent Rockies blog Purple Row about her expectations for the 2008 season, the challenges of marketing a team that plays half its games west of Connecticut, and more. Ducksnorts: Coming off their first World Series appearance, I'd imagine the Rockies are a hot item in town right about now. How optimistic are fans that this team can return to the playoffs in a very competitive NL West? How do you see this club doing in '08? Rox Girl: The mood around Lodo is very optimistic. Well, at least it was before we got pummeled ...

Prior Returns Home to San Diego

Thursday, December 27, 2007
by Geoff Young
The Padres have signed right-hander Mark Prior to a 1-year deal worth a guaranteed $1 million plus incentives that vary depending on whom you ask. ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the total package could be worth "over $3 million", while Dan Hayes at the North County Times places the high end at $5.5 million. Quoth GM Kevin Towers: Mark Prior is a competitor and is working hard to regain the form that made him one of the great young pitchers in the game. The good news is that Prior is 27 years old and has name recognition. The bad news ...

Interview: Steve Poltz, Part 5

Thursday, December 13, 2007
by Geoff Young
In Part 4 of our chat with singer/songwriter/Padre fan Steve Poltz poltz.com, Steve talked about Steve Garvey's homer in the NLCS in '84, shagging fly balls while Tony Gwynn took batting practice, and more. In our final segment, Steve discusses his meeting of Ken Caminiti, the heartbreak of watching USD alum Brady Clark struggle in Colorado, and his favorite baseball movies. *** Ducksnorts: How about the '98 team? Steve Poltz: Back in '98, Kevin Brown did it all. He was such a gamer; I f***in' loved that guy... [Ken] Caminiti, down in Mexico getting an IV... I have a memory of him driving on his motorcycle at Windansea -- that was the year I knew the whole ...

Weekend Winter Wrapup (29 Oct 07)

Monday, October 29, 2007
by Geoff Young
Congrats to the Red Sox on their World Series victory or whatever. Stephen said it best in the comments: Nothing warms my heart more than seeing Tom Werner standing on the podium to accept the WS trophy. For those who may have forgotten why we detest Werner in these parts, here's a handy reminder. Aside from the fact that he almost destroyed baseball in San Diego, I've got no real problems with the guy. To the winter leagues... Friday, October 26 East Rising Stars 3, West Rising Stars 2 (box | recap). Matt Antonelli batted second and went 0-for-2 with a walk. Interesting that he bats in the #7 or #8 hole for the ...
