Tied for First

The Padres are tied for first again after Wednesday night's 3-1 victory over Arizona at Petco Park (box score). That's nice, but let's not get carried away just yet. Not to bring everyone down, but being in first place on August 30 isn't the goal, it's just a signpost along the highway. The Padres have 30 games remaining on the schedule, and if the fact that they've picked up 5 games in the standings over the past 11 games doesn't convince you that anything can happen, then I don't know what will. Back to Wednesday, Greg Maddux gave another solid performance. He got himself into trouble a ...

Game #132 time:7:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (10-9, 3.90) vs Micah Owings (6-7, 4.69) pre:Padres.com, B-R.com Greg Maddux hasn't issued a walk all month. He's issued just three over 210 plate appearances since the All-Star break. Two of those came in the same game. Maddux has walked zero or one batters in 22 of his 27 starts this year. In 1997, he did that in 28 of 32 starts. Maddux is averaging 1.17 walks per nine innings, best in baseball, and he's already walked more batters than he did in 71 more innings in '97. It's sick, is what it is. So is the fact that Micah Owings has outhomered ex-Padre Josh Barfield ...

Game #127 time:4:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (9-9, 3.90) vs Jamie Moyer (11-6, 4.12) pre:Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer both made their big-league debuts in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs. Moyer's first game came on June 16. He beat Steve Carlton and the Phillies, 7-5, at Wrigley Field. The first batter Moyer faced, ex-Padre Ron Roenicke, doubled but was left stranded when Mike Schmidt rapped into a 5-4-3 double play started by Davey Lopes. Ryne Sandberg and Gary Matthews each collected two hits in support of Moyer, as did ex-Padres Keith Moreland (technically he ...

Game #118 time:7:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (7-9, 4.15) vs Jeff Francis (13-5, 4.06) pre:Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com I understand that it is customary to panic when a team is three games out of first place with 45 remaining on the schedule. According to Wikipedia, "the word panic derives from the name of the Greek god Pan." The Greek god, of course, is named after the Pan flute. Since some folks seem to believe that the Padres are sinking, this only seems appropriate:

This chart was supposed to be useful; instead, it's just... colorful? Kinda reminds me of a Dead show I once saw in Vegas. Santana opened; we slept in a tent at a rest stop on the way home. That probably wasn't the best idea. Go Padres!

Game #98 time:6:05 p.m. PT tv:4SD sp:Greg Maddux (7-7, 4.17) vs Jeff Francis (10-5, 4.07) Before the season I thought that Colorado's pitching would surprise folks, and it has. I also suggested that Jeff Francis could finish in the top 10 in the NL in ERA. That probably won't happen, but for a kid who plays half his games, he is putting up some terrific numbers. On second thought, lose the qualifier. Francis is putting up some terrific numbers, period. Go Padres!
