Nothing has happened yet, but all indications are that life is about to get real interesting around these parts. With that in mind, here's a little something to help you through as we move forward into the unknown... Q: What the heck is going on with the Padres? A: Principle owners John and Becky Moores have filed for divorce. Custody of the team will be a part of the proceedings, although as of early October, "no decision regarding the Padres has been made." Some reports suggest that total payroll could plummet to as low as $40 million in 2009. This may or may not be the result of a desire to make the franchise ...

Padres vs Braves 1:05 p.m. PT Channel 4SD, DIRECTV 740 AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 188 MLB, B-R Saturday night's game can be broken into two distinct categories: Good: The '98 team was honored before the contest (Gaslamp Ball has sweet photos). Chase Headley drew his first walk of the year. Greg Maddux stole a base. The post-game fireworks show rocked. Not so much: A Braves fan sitting near us kept asking Tim Hudson for his warmup jacket throughout the game. Joe Thatcher gave up a mammoth homer to a Ferengi (I'm pretty sure that violates at least one rule of acquisition). The fireworks show included "Hero" as sung by Bob Dylan's ...

Padres vs Braves 7:15 p.m. PT Channel 4SD, DIRECTV 737 AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 189 MLB, B-R We had a great time at the Baseball Prospectus event Friday night. Big thanks to Dave Pease and Joe Sheehan for organizing, the Padres for hosting, and of course Paul DePodesta for being incredibly generous with his time. I'm sworn under threat of Very Nasty Things, Indeed (TM) not to repeat what was said, but I think it's safe to note that DePo referenced Schopenhauer, Thomas Paine, and Malcolm Gladwell in his talk. He also answered all of our questions with patience, thoughtfulness, and as much candor as his position permits. Several Ducksnorters made it ...

Falling Off the Bandwagon

We are all products of our environment. The recent environment in San Diego baseball has been one of winning. Since moving downtown for the 2004 season, the Padres have seen unprecedented on-field success. For the first time in franchise history they've enjoyed four straight winning seasons. In 2005 and 2006, they reached the post-season in back-to-back seasons, another first. And as fans in these parts are all too aware, they came within a strike of making it three straight. Through Monday, the Padres have won 360 games since 2004. That's more wins than all but three teams in the National League (Cardinals, 389; Phillies, 369; Braves, 368) over the same period. Only the Padres and Phillies have posted winning records in each of the past four ...

Padres (12-21) @ Braves (16-15) Randy Wolf vs Tim Hudson 4:00 p.m. PT Channel 4SD AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 186 MLB, B-R I saw Hudson's big-league debut, against the Padres at the Q. Despite his dominant showing that evening, it took me a while to accept Hudson as front-line starter. From July 2001: I've been slow to jump on the Hudson bandwagon but he's making it very difficult for me to maintain my position. I was at his big-league debut, ...
