IGD: Padres vs Diamondbacks (30 Aug 07)
Thu, Aug 30, 2007by Geoff Young

| sp: | Chris Young (9-4, 2.12) vs Doug Davis (11-11, 4.09) |

How sweet would a sweep be? Pretty sweet.
Also, is it just me or is anyone else offended by the fact that the pitcher with the best ERA in the league (Chris Young) has the same number of wins as the pitcher with the worst ERA in the league (Adam Eaton, 9-8, 6.23)?
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

Here’s a source to back up the fact that GY is offended by …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/st.....p;sort=137
… which would be more interesting with a “Run Support” column added to it … which would likely explain the root cause of the offense … pun intended …
August 30, 2007 at 6:20 pm
Wow, CY’s home stats are fun to look at …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/pl.....JVFq6FCLcF
… 0.66 ERA, 0.88 WHIP … yow!
August 30, 2007 at 6:35 pm
Between the Padres, the Chargers preseason tilt, college football getting started, and Team USA playing a presumably competitive game against Argentina, the remote control is going to get a workout tonight…
Do we know anything more about the starter tomorrow night? Cassel, according to the latest news?
August 30, 2007 at 6:41 pm
3 - answering my own question…the Channel 4 pregame show just said it will be Cassel. corresponding roster move to be announced…
Other news - Bell is unavailable for tonight’s game, Hoffman is ready to go
And lastly, Barrett will be active on Saturday when the rosters are expanded.

The Game Notes at mlb.com says TBA …

#3: I’m half tempted to move our bedroom TV into the living room so I *won’t* wear out my remote. No PIP with HD unfortunately. God, this is my favorite time of year!
August 30, 2007 at 6:58 pm
Okay, I’m gonna stay up a bit and watch the game.
BUT ONLY THE FIRST FOUR INNINGS!
Geoff, can you block my IP from accessing the site after the bottom of the 4th? Thanks!
August 30, 2007 at 7:00 pm
#7: Steve, you may be screwed if Geoff went to the game tonight! LOL
August 30, 2007 at 7:05 pm
8: Geoff should really announce in the description which games he’s going to or not. If only so we know that while he’s at a game we can curse as much as we want.
August 30, 2007 at 7:07 pm
#9: LOL. Okay, then; I’m here.
August 30, 2007 at 7:07 pm
10: *nuts*
August 30, 2007 at 7:08 pm
Chargers go three-and-out to start, as Arizona’s Chris Young does the exact same thing.
August 30, 2007 at 7:08 pm
Nice to see Young hump it up there to 90. If he starts throwing in the mid 80s again, we know he’s not well.
August 30, 2007 at 7:11 pm
KOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZZZZZZ!
August 30, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Holy smokes; Kouz caught that? Wow!
August 30, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Kouz with a sick web gem of a catch. That will play on SportsCenter.
August 30, 2007 at 7:11 pm
That was a fantastic catch!
August 30, 2007 at 7:12 pm
How would you like to be the fan that has to catch Kouz? LOL
August 30, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Sweet Christ Kouz! Unbelievable!!!
August 30, 2007 at 7:14 pm
KK playing like a Charger fighting for a roster position.
August 30, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Unfortunately, commercials are happening at the same time for the Padres and Charger games. Grrr.
August 30, 2007 at 7:20 pm
CY vs. Tony Clark = two very tall baseball players.
August 30, 2007 at 7:20 pm
After 1 …
Pitches-strikes - D Davis 11-8; C Young 11-8.
Ground balls-fly balls - D Davis 0-2; C Young 0-2.
Batters faced - D Davis 3; C Young 3.
… things are pretty even so far
August 30, 2007 at 7:25 pm
So what the over-under on the total runs scored today? 4?
August 30, 2007 at 7:26 pm
That’s not good.
August 30, 2007 at 7:26 pm
that ball was hit hard and got out in a hurry
August 30, 2007 at 7:27 pm
Yeah, ouch. The offense need to pick up CY tonite. He looks like he’s struggling to locate his pitches big time. Hopefully it’s just jitters.
August 30, 2007 at 7:32 pm
CY just gave up the ERA lead
August 30, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Way OT, but more Chargers - Clinton Hart picked off Alex Smith just now
August 30, 2007 at 7:33 pm
#29: His 2nd in the Pre-Season.
August 30, 2007 at 7:35 pm
Nice to see this umpire is in consistent too. Pitches 2 and 5 were similar and in the same location inside, but one was a strike and one was a ball.
August 30, 2007 at 7:36 pm
28 … to Jake, right? I actually think that helps Jake’s chances for the CYA
August 30, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Chargers just scored a field goal.
August 30, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Thru 2 …
Pitches-strikes - D Davis 21-14; C Young 35-21.
Ground balls-fly balls - D Davis 0-4; C Young 1-3.
Batters faced - D Davis 6; C Young 9.
… ah, yes, a bit of separation now …
August 30, 2007 at 7:37 pm
32 … to phrase it positively, Peavy just took over the ERA lead
August 30, 2007 at 7:39 pm
So, Gameday makes the homerun look like it was mammoth… any word on how far it really was? I saw a replay and it appeared like it might be the farthest one I’ve seen at Petco… is that possible?
August 30, 2007 at 7:40 pm
This is bad. CY should never ever walk anyone with any speed at all. It’s basically handing the bad Chris Young second and maybe even third base.
August 30, 2007 at 7:40 pm
Baserunners have now stolen successfully on all 31 attempts against CY this year.
August 30, 2007 at 7:41 pm
is anyone else frustrated with our complete inability to hold runners? this is a serious problem and (assuming we get there) will bite the Padres in the posterior come postseason.
August 30, 2007 at 7:43 pm
36 - it was well up in the 2nd deck in left. haven’t heard anything on distance.
August 30, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Last time a runner was caught stealing with CY on the mound came on September 22, 2006, the night that he flirted with a no-no at Petco. Mike Piazza gunned down Rajai Davis at second base to end the sixth.
August 30, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Why is the postseason any different than the regular season?
August 30, 2007 at 7:45 pm
42 was directed at 39.
August 30, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Another Charger field goal.
August 30, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Cocteau Twins on cut to commercial. Very nice…
August 30, 2007 at 7:48 pm
55 pitches for CY, 21 for Davis (although CY has an extra IP). Yikes. And Davis has a NO-HITTER too. That’s right, a NO-HITTER. Just fyi.
Make that 22 pitches for Davis through 2.1.
August 30, 2007 at 7:48 pm
OT: I need to fire up a new poll. Any ideas?
August 30, 2007 at 7:51 pm
43 - only because, in my highly unscientific opinion, everything bad about a team gets magnified in the postseason. the margin for error is much tighter, and opponents make a point of emphasizing flaws. it’s all too easy for me to picture a team like the Mets w/ Jose Reyes (how I hate playing against him) stealing every time a batter reaches first. that sort of thing, if successful, is quite demoralizing.
I know there’s Maddux’s contention that holding baserunners isn’t worth the effort b/c a runner who steals 2nd only scores 16% of the time. but I can’t shake the (again, highly unscientific) feeling that our inability to limit stolen bases will burn us in October.
August 30, 2007 at 7:51 pm
47: What is more probable:
-Padres win playoff series
-Chargers win playoff game
August 30, 2007 at 7:52 pm
48: Yeah, but we just finished up a series against the Mets where they did steal every single time they were on base, and we won 2 of the 3 games.
August 30, 2007 at 7:53 pm
47: NL Cy Young winner should be? Peavy, Webb, Harang, et al.
August 30, 2007 at 7:54 pm
47 … How many games will the Padres win in Sept?
August 30, 2007 at 7:54 pm
50 - true, and those games were as close as possible and could have gone either way. I just fear that we’ll get burned by a team running aggressively when we can’t do much to stop it.
August 30, 2007 at 7:54 pm
46: He has a perfect game.
August 30, 2007 at 7:54 pm
That was about as ugly a three innings as you can get offensively. 4 k’s, and Davis threw a whopping 33 pitches.
August 30, 2007 at 7:56 pm
47 … How many hits will Brian Myrow get for the Padres this season?
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_tucaaa_1
… hmm, Barrett’s in the Portland lineup tonight … and they are winning!
August 30, 2007 at 7:56 pm
47 - Saves for Trevor in Sept….
August 30, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Thru 3 …
Pitches-strikes - D Davis 33-21; C Young 55-32.
Ground balls-fly balls - D Davis 1-4; C Young 3-4.
Batters faced - D Davis 9; C Young 13.
… ‘nuf said …
August 30, 2007 at 7:57 pm
And there goes CY handing people second base again.
August 30, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Thanks, guys; I’m going with Cy Young award for now.
August 30, 2007 at 7:58 pm
57 … ooh, I like that one … or how about “Saves for Trevor in October”?
August 30, 2007 at 7:58 pm
60 … weak … I predict Peavy will win that poll … shocking!
August 30, 2007 at 8:01 pm
#57: Ginger or Mary Ann?
August 30, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Chase Headley with double #37 tonight …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_sanaax_1
August 30, 2007 at 8:03 pm
64 … which reminds me, in case you missed it in today’s earlier comments …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....;fext=.jsp
Headley = Texas League Player of the Year
Geer = Texas League Pitcher of the Year
… plus Hundley and Venable on the All-Star team … nice!
August 30, 2007 at 8:07 pm
#63: I meant to direct that to #47. Sorry.
August 30, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Nice dbl, Cammy!
August 30, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Mike Cameron = doubles machine
August 30, 2007 at 8:11 pm
63: Huh? You lost me there…
August 30, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Hey, it’s a hit!
August 30, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Uh oh, Matty V is talking about Canepa’s column on Milton…
August 30, 2007 at 8:12 pm
There goes the perfect game and the no-hitter. Now let’s take away the shutout and the lead….
August 30, 2007 at 8:13 pm
#69 see #66
August 30, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Stupid baserunning Cameron. We can’t afford that kind of thing tonite.
August 30, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Why are you popping out on a 3-0 pitch?
August 30, 2007 at 8:18 pm
A 3-0 pitch that was ball 4.
August 30, 2007 at 8:18 pm
71 … what’d he say?
August 30, 2007 at 8:19 pm
Pitiful execution that inning.
August 30, 2007 at 8:20 pm
I have to admit… of COURSE I want to see the sweep. But I feel good already with taking the first three. It’s like this game would just be bonus.
Hope the boys don’t feel the same way…
August 30, 2007 at 8:21 pm
BTW, Touchdown, Buster Davis…
August 30, 2007 at 8:21 pm
OT - touchdown Bolts, Whitehurst to Davis
August 30, 2007 at 8:22 pm
77 - not much, fortunately. Talked about how Milton’s intensity is rubbing off on Adrian. They didn’t get into anything as inflammatory as we did on this morning’s thread.
August 30, 2007 at 8:25 pm
oh well… sets up the double play, right?
August 30, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Speaking of football, this is probably a good time to pimp Rich’s Chargers blog:
http://mvn.com/nfl-chargers/
August 30, 2007 at 8:25 pm
CY not on his game tonight.
August 30, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Maybe it wasn’t such a great idea to rush CY back for tonight’s start. He’s been pretty bad.
August 30, 2007 at 8:26 pm
okay, they need to get CY outa there… a HBP and then two nasty misses with location
August 30, 2007 at 8:27 pm
86: Unfortunately tonite, so has the Padres’ offense.
August 30, 2007 at 8:27 pm
An interesting sequence on paper …
- O. Hudson stole second
- E. Byrnes hit by pitch
August 30, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Thanks Geoff… I seem to be getting a lot of angry Giant and Raider fans… So I must be doing something right.
August 30, 2007 at 8:29 pm
yeesh. can I get a Cla Meredith from the congregation?
August 30, 2007 at 8:29 pm
Anybody up in the pen? If not, it’s too late now …
August 30, 2007 at 8:29 pm
90 - you’re in the RSS reader. if the Raider fans are vexed, you’re doing God’s work
August 30, 2007 at 8:30 pm
#92: Thatcher coming in…
August 30, 2007 at 8:31 pm
This game is far from over … one GIDP comin’ up, boyz!
August 30, 2007 at 8:34 pm
Ya know, despite having said that earlier about the “bonus feeling”… a victory tonight would be huge as far as momentum.
August 30, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Damn, that was an impressive at-bat by Drew.
August 30, 2007 at 8:35 pm
shoot.
August 30, 2007 at 8:36 pm
#90: I just posted there. The first guy that posted was typical of Raider gang bangers.
August 30, 2007 at 8:38 pm
nicely done there, Olise
August 30, 2007 at 8:40 pm
More on the Reynolds home run - 451 feet, 2nd longest in Petco history.
“That ball wouldn’t have been out of a lot of parks…”
“Name one.”
“Yellowstone.”
August 30, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Nice fielding by Nina!!!
August 30, 2007 at 8:43 pm
This is a disaster. I think I’ll watch football for awhile…
August 30, 2007 at 8:44 pm
So much for damage control.
Tip your caps to Drew and Reynolds. Those were fantastic at-bats right there.
August 30, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Ouch.
#99: Thanks Rick! Shoulda seen the comments I got out of NY Giants fans after I mentioned that LT was a bigger presence in The City than Eli was…
so… six run deficit. The positive? If we come back and win we will crush their spirits. If we lose, we still take 3 out of 4 in the series.
August 30, 2007 at 8:52 pm
A true MVP would hit a HR here … to start the team on the comeback trail …
August 30, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Who should PH here?
August 30, 2007 at 8:57 pm
This seems like a much better match-up than we could muster earlier in the season … what’s Ensberg’s health status? If not for health-releated reasons, why hasn’t he played since Aug 18th?
