My latest article at Hardball Times deals with the limits of our knowledge and understanding in a baseball context. It’s a bit esoteric, even by my standards, but maybe you’ll enjoy it…
* * *
Meanwhile, back at the ballpark, Peavy makes his first start since May 14. He’s 1-3 with a 4.71 ERA over his last five starts. Here’s hoping the rest will have done him some good. Go Padres!
#50@Kevin: As long as you accept the responsibility for the possible jinx.
I go to one little meeting, and it is 5-0.
I forgot that the Padres are at Cleveland starting tomorrow. I guess we’ll know whether they plan on calling up Headley tomorrow if he’s not in the lineup tonight. Portland is playing at Fresno tonight at 7:05.
4-3 Mets, No outs, Snakes on 2nd, 3rd.
Wagner walks the next guy on four pitches. Snakes have bases full with no outs, bases full.
#52@Field39: Go to another one.
Two runs in now for Snakes, tied at 4, 2 outs, runners on 1st, 3rd, Reynolds up.
Did the Pads jinx Wagner or what?
I’m going to lunch. The Mets and Snakes are tied going into the bottom of the ninth.
Wagner is *done* … he coughs up another save … Mets and DBacks tied 4-4 in top of 9th
Box score shows KK striking out between an AGon walk and a PMac walk … could he have been more patient in his AB?
Mac should be a good option as long as we keep him hitting against righties. ML teams use way too few platoons these days, but our Huber/Mac and Hairston/Gerut style OFs are actually not bad and quite inexpensive.
#60@LynchMob: Waved at three sliders.
#61@Alan: Agree, although it might be nice to have PMac’s right-handed partner be someone who can hit lefties and play good defense. I like Huber on the bench, and he’s made a couple of tough catches, but he generally doesn’t look too good out there.
6 runs on 6 hits, and it still seems like we should have 2 or 3 more easy.
#62@Phantom: Bleh I hope Pedro Cerano Syndrome is not contagious….
#48@Kevin: How much of a factor is Petco on OBP ?
#65@JP: Not sure. But average is a large part of on-base. And either way, his on-base is quite good for an average park.
Good to see Jake out with just 72 pitches. They really could have waited longer so it’s nice to see a relatively low stress outing.
How did he look? Was his velocity fine?
Hey, I like what Jake’s doing on 27 days rest … after top of 6th …
Pitches-strikes – H Kuroda 63-33; C Park 24-17; J Peavy 72-52.
Ground balls-fly balls – H Kuroda 4-1; C Park 6-1; J Peavy 7-7.
Batters faced – H Kuroda 17; C Park 7; J Peavy 21.
#59@LynchMob: Are you at least sort of joking?
#63@Tom Waits: You have convinced me that it is too early to write off Huber (you made a comparison I liked with Bubba Trammell) but you think by now that Huber would be showing a bit more power (150+ PA’s with only 7 extra base hits – not too mention that he has only walked 9 times).
#66@Kevin: PMAC gets on base-no doubt about it.
#65@JP:
#66@Kevin:
Since it opened, all hitters at Petco have gone 244/312/377. Across all NL parks including Petco, the line is 265/335/425. So it’s a pretty serious dip, and as Kevin suggests, it’s largely driven by batted balls not falling.
#69@Kevin: Yes, poking fun at myself a bit for my stance on Trevor … Wagner is in a small-sample-size-slump, however … which was OK when it was versus Padres … but now that it’s versus DBacks, it’s not pretty …
#72@Tom Waits: How do those number split between day and night games? Perhaps the fans would be happier with day games … in more ways than one!
#70@JP: I’d just throw away his 78 at-bats as a 22 year old. They’re basically useless in predicting anything. Not that he’s been great since then, but not only is he still getting his feet wet in the majors, he’s doing it while getting 1 start every 8 games or so.
#73@LynchMob: Yeah, it’s hard to say a closer with a 2.33 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and 10.67 K rate is done.
Edgar (small sample size) has a .316 average and a .381 on-base. Not only very good, but clearly better than Iguchi at .259/.324.
#74@LynchMob: No idea.
#73@LynchMob: I’ve never really liked Wagner. He seems to have some Nevin in him, “Being a good teammate is what I say it is.” That could be totally unfair of me.
#77@Kevin: Better than that, now. He’s having himself a day.
#72@Tom Waits: I’d be curious to see what the BABIP numbers are.
bRoBI!
And we add on a bit more. Love to see them do this.
It’s been an awesome homestand. I hope we can carry this level of play through the ASB.
Geez, Kouz. Maybe Stansberry gets the start tomorrow.
#79@Tom Waits: Those numbers were through his first three at-bats today. He is now batting .328.
Not sure if I’m the last one to know this, but Thatcher was the pitcher who was sent down for Peavy.
#76@Kevin: But it’s not hard to say a closer who’s blown 3 saves in a row “done” … it’s not right … but it’s not hard to say … his ERA was 0.36 until Tony Clark started him on this tailspin …
#77@Kevin: Ha I was just about to post that Guchi may turn into Wally Pip.
#86@LynchMob: It may not be hard to say. But it’s over-reactionary. Three bad outings after the epitome of dominance is the consumate defintion of small sample size.
#87@Steve C: If Edgar maintains .300/.350, there’s no reason to sit him when Iguchi comes back.
Nothing but good at-bats from McAnulty today.
#90@Tom Waits: to bad we can’t say the same about his base running…
Too bad for Greene that Young made a highlight reel catch.
“Now the Dodgers know they could have spent the day at the beach. — Scully
Greene was out on an incredible catch. The other two outs came on really hard hit balls right at outfielders.
Sorry, Edgar lined out to third on a hard hit ball.
Stansberry’s new line: 1.000/1.000/1.500 in two plate appearances.
Giles: nice catch on warning track.
#81@Tom Waits: bRoBI?
#98@LynchMob: Adrian knocked in Edgar.
#88@Kevin: Agree 100% … which is what I meant by poking fun at myself for my stance on Hoffy …
#83@Tom Waits: Great idea … I think getting KK a day off might help him …
#89@Kevin: Edgar sure looked like a real hitter when I saw him @ Peoria … and his approach at the plate looks very solid in these recent games … I like him …
