Do you suppose Eaton misses San Diego? I’m thinking maybe he does. Let’s take a closer look at everyone’s favorite perpetual breakout candidate:

Adam Eaton, with or without the Padres

  G IP/G ERA H/9 HR/9 BB/9 SO/9
Statistics are courtesy of David Pinto’s Day-by-Day Database.
with Padres 133 5.98 4.34 8.90 1.14 3.18 7.04
with other teams 48 5.31 5.86 10.55 1.52 3.74 5.54

Once upon a time, I liked Eaton as much as I liked Jake Peavy. Sad to say, the train has left the station…

  1. GY your intro speaks of Jake in the past tense. Has he fallen out of favor with you?

  2. I know what he means. There was a time when both Peavy and Eaton were grouped together as the future arms of the club. I used to link them also.

  3. Buzzie Bavasi has passed away at 93.

  4. I think we would still have Adam if not for the injuries.

  5. Peavy, Eaton, and Lawrence called themselves the Three Amigos. Some newspaper types likened them to Glavine/Maddux/Smoltz, because newspaper ink makes you bat-shit crazy.

When Eaton debuted with the Padres, his curveball was almost too good, it broke so much many umpires would miss it.

  6. #4@parlo: He did a lot for baseball. Including getting San Diego a MLB team.

  7. Hey I love Eaton! He has probably contributed more to this team than any other player has.

I mean last year alone he brought us 30 HR’s, a 100 RBI’s, 9 wins, 167 strikeouts, an all star appearance and a LF who now lives in Japan!

    Now that’s production!

  8. #6@Tom Waits: “Some newspaper types likened them to Glavine/Maddux/Smoltz, because newspaper ink makes you bat-shit crazy.”

    That is f-ing classic!

Geoff, you’ve been soliciting suggestions lately. How about starting a “Classic Posts” section, or a “Classic Quotes” section? Folks could nominate posts or quotes from posts, which you could review for inclusion in the section if deemed worthy. It’s a way to memorialize worthy contributions and/or funny stuff. Just a thought.

  9. AGONE! This is like de jevu all over again.

  10. You did NOT throw him an 88 mph fastball in Philadelphia, did you, Adam?

  11. #11@Tom Waits: In Petco: Does that ball hit the mystery wall?

  12. Did Edmonds really get a hit? Now he’s 2 for his last 39! Maybe he got a Philly “slumpbuster.”

  13. Damn, I thought Wolf was going yard there.

  14. Heckuva play by Utley to double up Giles. Is there *anything* that guy can’t do?

  15. Khalil finally takes an outside pitch the other way and Howard makes a leaping catch to rob him. We should have scored a couple runs that inning.

  16. Was the double play a great play, or a base running muff?

  17. #18@Field39: Great play. Giles was barely off the bag, Utley flipped the ball from his glove hand.

Nice pitch by Wolf to strike out Werth.

  18. Great pitch there to strike out Utley for the 2nd time this game. Not a terrible pitch to Howard there — I guess we know why Edmonds plays CF and Hairston plays LF as Hairston didn’t look very good on that hit.

So much for the lead. Teams that win get hits with 2 outs, teams that suck, like the Padres, leave runners on.

  19. Wolf freezes Utley on a 3-2 fastball. Very nice.

Hairston is not having a good game in left tonight.

  20. you know, it sure would be nice to win this series.

  21. Dang it. I turned off the radio for a little bit and now it’s tied.
    Sorry, folks. My fault.

  22. wife’s at a meeting, kids are asleep. I’ve got the Sox Blue Jays game on TV, the Pads on XM (Harry Kalas doing play by play), DS on the ‘net and a Newcastle in my hand.

Life is pretty damn good right now.

  23. so much for the good life, stupid XM just went out.

  24. Thru 3 full …

    Pitches-strikes – R Wolf 56-39; A Eaton 61-35.

    Ground balls-fly balls – R Wolf 2-3; A Eaton 0-7.

    Batters faced – R Wolf 15; A Eaton 14.

  25. #23@Didi: Way to go. Thanks a lot, man. ;-)

    #24@Nick G: Mmm, Newcastle…

  26. Are we conducting an experiment on how many games is too many for a catcher? Hopefully this will un-jinx Bard, but he looks like he’s swinging a 54 ounce bat sometimes. How did Morton not start against one of Philly’s LHP?

  27. OT: Beer. Those of you in San Diego should check out the Green Flash Brewery. Their West Coast IPA is, IMO, outstanding.

  28. #28@Tom Waits: You know, I was just going to bring up the Bard thing. They have to get him a day off here and there. Right now, Morton is just taking up a roster spot.

  29. I don’t know if it as obvious to people watching as it is on MLB Gameday, but Eaton is throwing everything on the outer half or off the outer half. Even to Wolf.

  30. the flyin Hawaiian. He would look good in CF in Petco.

  31. Bardo! Nice job

  32. 4 pitch walk to Victorino, not good.

  33. Werth-less. Buh bye.

  34. Thru 4 full …

    Pitches-strikes – R Wolf 76-48; A Eaton 86-49.

    Ground balls-fly balls – R Wolf 3-4; A Eaton 1-9.

    Batters faced – R Wolf 20; A Eaton 18.

… Eaton with a pretty good CY impersonation … that’s some GB/FB ratio!

  35. Sometimes hitters drive me nuts. Wolf has just struggled through a long inning, and our first two hitters see 3 pitches total.

  36. 3 of the first 4 hitters to face Meredith will be lefties. That’s some bad managing by Black.

  37. That DP was huge.

  38. DP — nice!

  39. #38@Ben B.: Oops. Retracted. Good managing by Black to not let Meredith face Utley and Howard.

  40. 39/40 … can one of you describe the DP for those of us that didn’t see it? thx …

  41. #42@LynchMob: didn’t see it, heard it on the radio. Liner to Edmonds, Flyin’ Hawaiian was running, Edmonds throws out Victorino at 1B.

  42. Howard. That SOB. Ruined my night.

  43. damn. lost again

  44. Another game, another loss. I would push the panic button again, but there doesn’t seeem to be much left of it.

  45. MadFriars is reporting that Kellen Kulbacki has been promoted to Lake Elsinore from Fort Wayne … they must think a “change of scenary” will help …

  46. #47@LynchMob: It might, I don’t think anyone hits at Fort Wayne.

  47. 47: I heard it’s because he’s fully healthy now.

27: Yup, my bad. Of course, I listened in to that Ryan Howard’s HR so I don’t know what to do now. To listen or not to listen (while I’m holding the transistor radio in my left hand)?

Does this lost mean the coaches are going to shave now?

Why in the world is Colt Morton not starting even one game yet? Even the much travelling troupe of Shakespeare from days o’yonder stop to rest in the meadows along the way. Didn’t they?

  48. I saw “Iron Man.” It was great.
