Seven useless facts about Estes:

  1. His first name is Aaron.
  2. He shares a birthday with Jerry Morales, a member of the 1969 Padres.
  3. The Mariners selected him with the 11th pick overall in 1991, three picks after the Padres took Joey Hamilton and two before the Cleveland Indians nabbed Manny Ramirez.
  4. Deion Sanders was the center fielder behind him in his first big-league start.
  5. He wore #36 on first arriving in the big leagues, but soon switched to #55, which he has donned since 1996.
  6. He once was traded for ex-Padre Desi Relaford.
  7. He later was traded for ex-Padre Brady Clark.

  1. Desi Relaford was also a Mariner if memory serves me correctly.

  2. Great information on Shawn “Schlom” Estes.

Come on Schlom – stop fighting it. You’re a closet Estes Fan and it’s time that you started admitting it…..

  3. It’s probably not fair to say this, but just based on game 163 from last year I hate Brady Clark.

  4. #2@Marsh: Estes would be a lot more palpable for me if his first initial was “T”. Then at least it would be funny everytime I thought about it.

  5. #4@Masticore317: You’re on a roll Masticore !!!

  6. Peavy missing next start with elbow soreness. The wheels keep falling off this bus.

  7. Wow ! Look at that Padre’s lineup. I am sure Felix the Cat is shaking in his cleats !

  8. Jake Peavy will miss his scheduled start on Monday for the San Diego Padres, bothered by soreness in his pitching elbow.

  9. #6@Zagz:

    #8@Kevin:

I wonder if NOW it will be okay to talk about trades that are geared towards 2009 and beyond.

  10. #9@Tom Waits: How many years do you guess Giles has left in the tank ?

  11. #9@Tom Waits: If Jakes goes down hard, and they trade Wolf and Maddux, it will be a very ugly second half.

  12. #11

As opposed to the lightning quick start we’ve experienced thus far? :P

  13. #9@Tom Waits: If Peavy misses one start, I don’t see what has changed.

You can talk about anything you want.

It was the posts that said: “The season is over!” after one month that made little sense.

  14. I think I remember Bud Black saying that P-Mac could fall out of bed and hit the ball….Um, yeah, sure…

  15. More atrocious baserunning to kill an inning. Just another day at the ol’ ballpark for the Pads

#13@Kevin: If Jake is gone for awhile (and from reading that ESPN article it’s pretty easy to see that he’s going to end up on the DL – elbow soreness on *every* pitch for the last couple of weeks is never good), then I’m ready to talk about trades for 2009 and beyond. There is absolutely no sense in taking the slightest risk with Jake’s elbow this year. None.

  16. Repeat after me – “No matter how well Estes pitches he is bad”. “No matter how well Estes pitches he is bad”.”No matter how well Estes pitches he is bad”.”No matter how well Estes pitches he is bad”.

  17. #15@Jefe: Kouz was gambeling there. The upside is a run, the downside a double play.

  18. #13@Kevin: If by “the season is over” we are referring to the chances of the Padres making the postseason, it was entirely reasonable by May 1 to say so. By that point the Padres chances of making the playoffs had fallen from perhaps 25% at the beginning of the season to below 2% by at least one measure (BP’s Post Season Odds). Since then we’ve fallen less than 1% more, to about 1.1% today.

  19. wow !!!!!!!!!

  20. #16@JP: Good start from Schlom Estes…..

  21. #18@dprat: All good organizations have a down year or two..hopefully spread out. It would be huge if our down year was right about .500

  22. I’m a Carlin fan. Really would like to have Barrett around as well.

  23. Repeat after me: Freeze on a line drive!

  24. #21@JP: I’d be pretty happy if the Padres finish around .500 given where they are now. And, BTW, I appreciate and value the enthusiasm for the Padres of most posters here at DS. It’s what fandom is about; as Turbine Dude has said, we love this team, good times and bad. I just wanted to point out that the naysayers on May 1 were looking at 49-1 odds against, and calling it as they saw it.

  25. #24@dprat: It’s a love of the game our fathers taught us.

  26. Tony Clark is three pianos slow.

  27. #15@Jefe: I agree with that. I don’t think my post disagreed with that.

  28. Estes has nearly as many balls as strikes….this is just like when Germano gave us that 2nd great start last year (also against the M’s) after being called up… you knew it was too good to last, but you had to hope…..

  29. I’m at the point that I don’t want to see any of our middle relievers in the game.

  30. #24@dprat: But “calling it” was premature because of the sample size.

  31. Another great inning by Schlom Estes!

  32. #31@Kevin: There is a point where the FO will have to make that call, if they are to use this season in a constructive manner.

  33. #25@Turbine Dude: Do you mean Fathers as in Padres?

  34. P-mac is dead to me.

  35. #22@Turbine Dude: I dont see any reason to have Barrett on the squad.

  36. #33@Field39: I totally agree. The thing is that is not a one or the other argument. Pushing the restart button and starting Headley and others could make the team better. It is not necessarily a concession move.

One of my friends who is a Red Sox fan said 1987 was an exciting year for him even though the team went 78-84 because they brought up Mike Greenwell, Ellis Burks and Sam Horn, and it was fun to see the future.

  37. Estes is entering the Bermuda triangle of Padre starters, the seventh inning.

  38. this feels eerily similar to last night…..

  39. Padre starters are averaging 5.9 innings per start. St Louis is leading the NL, with 6.0.

  40. #25@Turbine Dude: In my case, more my mother. ;-) But your point is well-taken… it’s a game that gets in your blood.

  41. Estes threw 80+ in six innings. If Bud doesn’t have “confidence” in Meredith, he has issues.

  42. Thank you for putting Meredith in.

  43. Great job all around there. Buddy didn’t wait too long and he played the matchups beautifully. It was bad luck Cla didn’t roll us a pair… Sweet heat from Heath…

  44. ESPN.com’s GameCast is screwy.

  45. #29@Marsh: It is VERY reminiscent of Germano last year. He started off not allowing runs even though his peripherals were terrible. It wasn’t long before he started allowing all kinds of runs.

I’m glad Estes gave up only one run. But no pitcher is successful with 1 strikeout every 3 innings.

  46. What is happening right now?

  47. I blame those really cheap hits by Vidro and Betancourt.

  48. Another day, another loss. This season has gone down the pocelain fixture, all that’s left is the stench.
