IGD: Padres vs Giants (15 Sep 07)

Great win Friday night (box score). Don’t believe me? Look at Saturday’s pitching matchup.
Five things:
- Certain promotions notwithstanding, the ’90s are not “retro,” although one day they will be.
- Chris Young is slowly returning to form, which is good because without him, the Padres are hosed.
- Khalil Greene and Kevin Kouzmanoff are carrying this team on offense right now. Khalil, Kouz, Brian Giles, and Adrian Gonzalez all have a SLG of .500 or better since August 1. Small sample, but nice.
- Extra mad props to USD alum and ex-Padre farmhand Dan Giese for serving up the walkoff homer to Khalil. Way to do right by your city.
- Paging Matt Vasgersian: Please return to your assigned post. Regards, my sanity.
Go Padres!

Quis is killing me. I was preparing to celebrate Khalil’s walkoff, but Quis managed to ruin that moment for me. I can’t get my head around the idea of someone enjoying his broadcasts enough to have hired him. It boggles the mind.
September 15, 2007 at 10:50 am
We may not have Silent L for the moment, but we have Quis.
September 15, 2007 at 11:18 am
Masticore asked about pics of last night games to see the uni’s … and I did some surfing and came up with a few links …
http://ducksnorts.com/blog/200.....ment-83105
Those 97/98 uni’s were nice … they’ll look good on a “90’s retro” night for many decades to come!
September 15, 2007 at 11:20 am
I wish they still used those uniforms
September 15, 2007 at 11:27 am
#4: Agreed, that was a good look for the Pads.
September 15, 2007 at 11:34 am
i just listened to the condensed game cause i missed most of it. I dont know how everyone is puuting up with Quis
September 15, 2007 at 11:40 am
Yo … org sweep last night …

… to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-5 Texas League Championship Series. Leblanc gets the W.
September 15, 2007 at 11:44 am
And a strong start by Nate Culp leads the Storm …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....p;did=milb
… RBIs by Freese and Cooper are enough … Storm now up 2-0 in the California League Championship Series.
September 15, 2007 at 11:55 am
Mets up, mild threat in the 5th.
September 15, 2007 at 11:56 am
8 … I just noticed that Cedric Hunter PH’d for San Antonio last night … good to get him exposed to some post-season baseball!
September 15, 2007 at 1:09 pm
OT- some really cool analysis of Maddux’s pitches this year using the enhanced Gameday data.
http://fastballs.wordpress.com.....-mishmash/
Mets bullpen doing its best to screw us over. 4 runs allowed by them in two innings to put Philly up 5-3 in the top of the 8th.
September 15, 2007 at 1:33 pm
Dodgers up 4-0 too.
I know stranger things have happened, but Tomko is so awful I can’t see how we pull out a win tonight.
September 15, 2007 at 1:50 pm
If David Wright is the NL MVP, he’ll hit a game-winning HR right here.
September 15, 2007 at 3:51 pm
Heading to Petco with son Danny……Go Padres and pray Tomko at least gives us a chance……..
September 15, 2007 at 5:00 pm
San Antonio are 7-0 up after the second: looks quite promising given that they are already 2-1 in the TCL series. So, two groups of Padre farmhands, some serious prospects among them, are being successful playing post-season baseball. That can’t be bad experience. And it does look as though the farm system was not quite as poor at the start of the season as the experts claimed.
Let’s hope both they and Lake Elsinore can see it though today.

4 … I posted a comment at uniwatchblog.com asking about last night uni’s (which were advertised as 1997, the last year TG won a batting title) … asking if the ‘97 & ‘98 were the same (Based on the pics at Dressed To The Nines, the Padre unis from 95 thru 2000 where the same) … and got this reply …
Essentially the blue pinstripe jersey remained unchanged from its inception in 1991 through the early 2000s (aside from various shoulder patches). In 1999, the Padres introduced the white jersey with no pinstripes and no orange as a second alternate jersey (the local papers here hated them because they thought they looked like Dodgers south in them). Dressed to the Nines shows this jersey starting in 2002, which was probably the year it replaced the blue pinstripe as the offial home jersey. It was definitely around before then though, because it’s easy to find pictures of Gwynn (who retired in 2001) wearing it.
Beginning in the late 1990’s, Padres starting pitchers were given the choice of what jersey they wanted to wear (pinstripe, solid blue, or all white) and barely any of them chose to go with the blue pinstripes. Eventually, the blue pinstripe was just gone. I’ve always wondered what was the last date the Padres wore the blue pinstripes (aside from last night of course).
… any uni afficianados here who can add to and/or comment on this?
ps. A link to this pic was posted at uniwatchblog.com and it crack’d me up …

16 … oh, ya … a whole lot o’ hittin’ goin’ on for the San Antonio Missions …

September 15, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Tomko better have a short leash tonight. We have plenty of fresh arms in the bullpen.
Let’s Look at what’s in front of us, not behind. Play aggressive, keep the heat on the D’backs, instead of playing defensively and trying to hold off the Dogs and Phils. Control our fate, not depend on someone helping us out.
September 15, 2007 at 5:24 pm
I just noticed that these comparisons make surprising reading:
Player 1 has hit .253, with an OBP of .331 and an SLG of .424; 24 doubles, 20 home runs.
Player 2 you’ll recognize: he has 39 doubles, 22 homers, and comes out at .255/.293/.461.
Player 3 will also be familiar: just 21 doubles and 11 homers, but he walks a lot: .282 /.371/.422.
So the trade of 1+ for 3 is not looking as one-sided this year as it has in the past; and the subsequent career paths are not now confirming the wisdom of the voters for the NL RoY 2004 as firmly as the last two years have. But of course it has been Jay Bay’s year to be injured.
September 15, 2007 at 5:50 pm
18 … Ekstrom with a no-no thru 5!
September 15, 2007 at 6:09 pm
It’s interesting looking at Blum’s numbers last year and comparing them to this year….they are almost exactly the same.
September 15, 2007 at 6:14 pm
22 … Ekstrom’s no-hitter has now reached the end of the sixth; but he’s thrown 91 pitches, so it’s not likely to go much further, even if he has just struck out bunting in the 7th. Dowdy’s added a homer to his earlier triple; so it’s now 8-0.
LES 1-0 down after four.
September 15, 2007 at 6:22 pm
Ekstrom’s given up a single with two out in the 7th.
September 15, 2007 at 6:37 pm
Now 10-0 to the Missions, with Dowdy just a single short of the cycle, and six outs to go.
September 15, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Thru 1 …
Pitches-strikes - M Cain 12-7; B Tomko 15-11.
Ground balls-fly balls - M Cain 1-1; B Tomko 2-0.
Batters faced - M Cain 3; B Tomko 3.
… looks like enough of us have our fingers crossed!
September 15, 2007 at 7:26 pm
23 - it’s a final … Storm boyz shutout 2-0 …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_sjgafa_1
… Storm up 2-1 … Game 4 tomorrow @ San Jose.
September 15, 2007 at 7:28 pm
25 … Springfield not going quietly … they’ve scored 6 in bottom of 9th … and there’s still only 1 out … 11-6 Missions still on top …
September 15, 2007 at 7:32 pm
At last San Antonio won: 11-7! In the top of the ninth Dowdy had a chance for the cycle, but made the final out.
September 15, 2007 at 7:33 pm
28 … looks like a final … Missions win 11-7 … whew!
September 15, 2007 at 7:34 pm
Adrian with a triple … how long did that take?
September 15, 2007 at 7:36 pm
1 run won’t be enough … but it’s nice to get things started … KG with SF …
September 15, 2007 at 7:40 pm
Thru 2 …
Pitches-strikes - M Cain 28-17; B Tomko 33-22.
Ground balls-fly balls - M Cain 2-2; B Tomko 2-2.
Batters faced - M Cain 7; B Tomko 8.
… I’m outta here … somebody take over … get the job done!
September 15, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Tomko actually looks good. I really think he might do ok if he only pitches at Petco
September 15, 2007 at 7:49 pm
Barrett just looks awful at the plate
September 15, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Can we just be thankful for the three shutout innings and pinch hit for Tomko now?
September 15, 2007 at 7:55 pm
36: He is pitching well. I dont mind him pitching at Petco
September 15, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Nobody really cares about the D-Backs here in AZ… sad.
Go Padres
September 15, 2007 at 8:16 pm
If anyone follows Aztec football, they are playing a good game against ASU. Its acually on Fox College Atlantic if you get the channel. 14-10 ASU in the 2nd
September 15, 2007 at 8:19 pm
Re: 39 what provider do you have, im stuck with checking ESPN.com every few min?
September 15, 2007 at 8:27 pm
40: COX (Ch. 332), but Time Warner has it too (Ch. 408)
September 15, 2007 at 8:31 pm
do you live in SD 332 is the NFL network
September 15, 2007 at 8:35 pm
42: Orange County now, I lived in SD about a month ago… Just look for FCS ATL, should be near the NFL network.
September 15, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Pretty high leverage for Brocail here
September 15, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Not sure why they pulled Tomko there, only 77 pitches and 52 strikes?
September 15, 2007 at 8:45 pm
Nice cleanup job by Thatcher
September 15, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Thatcher! Excellent work. He should start the eighth and pitch to Roberts too, ideally, then let Bell come in.
September 15, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Re: 43 bleh I dont think Cox SD has it
September 15, 2007 at 8:48 pm
anyone else think cammy should drop a bunt here?
September 15, 2007 at 8:49 pm
ha wow he made me look like an idot!
September 15, 2007 at 8:49 pm
there we go. Alright Cammy!
September 15, 2007 at 8:49 pm

September 15, 2007 at 8:50 pm
49: No…. haha
September 15, 2007 at 8:51 pm
Cameron!
September 15, 2007 at 8:51 pm
Quis celebrating a home run is like a big juicy **** after a delicious bean dinner.
September 15, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Quis is only a little unbearable on that one. Love Grant’s KISS riff. That’s how you do it, Steve-o.
September 15, 2007 at 8:53 pm
55. unclear if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
related note, I just spend $30 on burgers and ate it all by myself.
September 15, 2007 at 8:54 pm
57: Both
September 15, 2007 at 8:54 pm
I wish we could hit against the Giants bullpen all the time.
September 15, 2007 at 8:54 pm
Quis’ call on the double play when thatcher was in was actually more annoying than Cam’s HR
September 15, 2007 at 8:54 pm
Re: 55 ha have the sound off cause I cant stand Quis!
September 15, 2007 at 8:58 pm
They need to start looking for a decent replacement for Matty V. I actually like that new guy they got on the radio from the Cubs, maybe they could ask him. I have no idea how Quis got his job.
September 15, 2007 at 8:58 pm
do you guys agree with me that his excitement calls are the only major negative?
September 15, 2007 at 8:58 pm
cuz I don’t think he’s THAT bad otherwise.
September 15, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Hilariously prescient post from mccoveychronicles before the game:
” Matt Cain well pitch well, but throw 100 pitches before the 7th. (turns out he was removed before the 7th for other reasons, though)
The Giants won’t be able to hit Brett Tomko.
The bullpen will give up a run or five.
Scott Hairston and/or Khalil Greene will drive in some runs.
Thanks for visiting my site. I just saved you three hours. Come again tomorrow.”
September 15, 2007 at 9:00 pm
wow could Barrett be any more worthless this game?
September 15, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Re: 63 nope I think he lacks baseball knowledge and is increadibly boring as well.
September 15, 2007 at 9:02 pm
63: No way. He is terrible, boring as hell, tries way too hard and is either misimformed or incredibly stupid.
September 15, 2007 at 9:09 pm
yeah I guess
September 15, 2007 at 9:18 pm
69: Alright. I’ll agree with you Eric. To me Quis is “okay” the rest of the time. To me, it’s only in those excited moments of his when he’s trying to be Matty V he becomes mutable.
September 15, 2007 at 9:19 pm
that AB was epic
September 15, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Dirty slider by HEAT on a 15+ pitch AB it seemed like
September 15, 2007 at 9:21 pm
70- agreed
September 15, 2007 at 9:24 pm
Woah, check out the tatoo on that pitcher’s arm.
Which begs the question… what’s stopping a pitcher from tattooing cheat notes on his arm? Would that be an unfair advantage? You know, pulling a Belichick?
September 15, 2007 at 9:26 pm
nice game for Blummer
September 15, 2007 at 9:27 pm
It was still a mistake to let Blum hit against the lefty in the 8th ?
September 15, 2007 at 9:28 pm
Wow, just got home, dreading seeing the score and am happily surprised.
As for Quis, he is just as awful on the Chargers too, hopefully someday people just stop giving him work.
September 15, 2007 at 9:28 pm
between quis and blum, this must be “admit they’re sort of OK sometimes” week
September 15, 2007 at 9:29 pm
Blum has way more upside than Quis hahaha
September 15, 2007 at 9:30 pm
Now I’m starting to feel bad about all this Quis and Blum bashing. What if either one of them read this blog?
I’d feel so horrible if I ever found out there was people blogging about how crappy a web designer I was.
September 15, 2007 at 9:32 pm
dodgers beat the Dbacks. Longshot, but I think it’d be great if both SD and LA passed AZ. Teams that are pythagoreically lucky really annoy me.
September 15, 2007 at 9:34 pm
80: Could be a good thing for Quis, maybe he would take it as constructive criticism. I’m a web designer as well, it would be funny if someone actually blogged about it.
September 15, 2007 at 9:35 pm
80: I’ve been thinking that for weeks. We all know Matty V has checked in here, why not Quis, yknow?
September 15, 2007 at 9:38 pm
“I hate Geoff Blum with a passion.”
quote from a Giants fan on McCovey Chronicles, Interesting to see the other perspective.
September 15, 2007 at 9:40 pm
I am glad everyone else seems to agree that Steve Quis is awful. I have been hoping to see something in one of the newspapers. Besides shutting up he needs to at least get a clue about the rules of the game.
September 15, 2007 at 9:45 pm
Ah, that was a fun win. (Aren’t they all?)
#80: You’d be surprised who reads us. No, I’m not going to drop names.
#82: I blogged about web design at my old job; there are a lot of blogs out there on the subject.
September 15, 2007 at 9:52 pm
86: I meant about my web design in particular.
Very fun win, fun game to watch. Tomko looked good and he seems as good an option as any for the back end of the rotation.
