Look at Saturday's pitching matchup. Five things: Certain promotions notwithstanding, the '90s are not "retro," although one day they will be. Chris Young is slowly returning to form, which is good because without him, the Padres are hosed. Khalil Greene and Kevin Kouzmanoff are carrying this team on offense right now. Khalil, Kouz, Brian Giles, and Adrian Gonzalez all have a SLG of .500 or better ...

I thought we agreed that the bullpen can't afford that. The good news is that the Padres are off Thursday, so it shouldn't hurt much this time. Still, not the best idea. Like Wells, Maddux gets pounded once he reaches the sixth inning (.314/.338/.629 in 70 AB) or 76 pitches (.313/.368/.594 in 32 AB). Start getting those arms loose, and go Padres!

Do you notice any themes emerging early in the season? Here's one: Keep the game close and then let the bullpen take care of things. It happened again Monday night (recap | box score). San Francisco's Matt Cain took a no-hitter into the seventh. That inning, Khalil Greene smashed a double down the left field line. After falling behind in the count, 0-2, Russell Branyan drew a walk.
