IGD: Padres vs Giants (14 Sep 07)

Game #146
time: 7:05 p.m. PT
tv: 4SD
sp: Chris Young (9-7, 2.72) vs Barry Zito (9-12, 4.46)
pre: Padres.com, B-R.com

From the Baseball America 2004 Prospect Handbook (aff link), here’s a quick look back at two Montreal Expos prospects:

#9: Terrmel Sledge, OF:

Sledge needs to add more power in order to start on a corner. He needs to work on his routes on fly balls and his throwing.

#19: Chris Young, RHP:

…he developed slowly and fell out of favor with the new regime after general manager Dave Littlefield took over. Pittsburgh traded Young and righthander Jon Searles for Matt Herges in December 2002, then released Herges at the end of spring training.

Yep, there were 18 prospects rated more highly than CY in the Expos system in ‘04. Of those, guys currently in the big leagues include RHP Chad Cordero (#5), RHP Shawn Hill (#6), RHP Darrell Rasner (#7), Sledge, OF Ryan Church (#10), RHP Jason Bergmann (#12), and Jerry Owens (#17).

Now you know why I don’t sweat too much over what some experts might think about, say, Matt Antonelli…

The Padres are getting about what they should have expected as far as games played by Bradley. I see him playing 190 of 395 (48%) in 2005,06,& 07 pre-acquisition, and 29 of 59 (49%) once he started playing for SD. Then again, KC rejected their trade for him due to injury questions. At this point we gotta hope he plays half the remaining games— the last half.

#1: I totally agree with your last sentence.

This is going to be a BIG weekend for San Diego sports. The Padres really need to hang on to their bid for the wildcard.

The Chargers going into New England with this big scandal hanging over Belichick and his organization and Moss with a potential “team decision.” I’m anticipating that game with some trepidation.

    Go Padres! Go Chargers!

We picked a really bad time to go ice cold.

When you have as big a lead (in the wild card) this late in the season, you really have to work hard to blow it.

Friars better fix this soon, our this will be the most painful off-season in a long time.

At Lake Elsinore, the Storm win 3-2 to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five series. Now take a bus to San Jose. Tonight. Ahhh, the perks of Class A baseball.

The worst part about losing is that it will be due to not being able to get the opposing pitcher with two outs and giving up a two-out triple followed by a wild pitch.

Stop the torture!!! I hope we loose 10 in a row and are mathmatically eliminated so I and the rest of DS can live again. This team is the most torturous of all. Pathetic, waiting for Jenga to return so they can have some fire. God damn it!!!! The fricking giants and we don’t even give it a good go.

There, I said it, may I be damned from DS forever for being down on the team, maybe I;m a lousy Padre fan, but at least I said what we are all feeling.

44: PM, I’m with you – if they can’t find it in themselves to actually win some games down the stretch, why get your hopes up that they’ll suddenly pull their heads out for the playoffs?

Yes, I know, St Louis did it last year.

Do I want them to win? Of course, but they’re hardly playing inspiring baseball at the critical part of the season.

Their best hope of doing well in the postseason is to rest CY and Jenga and hope they recover 100% to carry the team.

57 – If you’re negative and they lose, you don’t feel so bad. If they win, you feel better.

If you’re positive and they lose, you feel disappointed. If they win, it was just what you expected.

I only have a quarter century of rooting for the Padres, so longer-term fans that are still positive can roast me all they want for the negativity…

Right there, two game winning long balls that got caught. OG and Camy with SHOTS! that would win the game, taken away by Petco. And you don’t think every play in both dugouts isn’t thinking the same thing. Lets face it people, its a lousy park for hitting and all of MLB knows it. 75: Sorry to keep flogging this dead horse, but Blum is hitting .217 against lefties this year. None of his home runs have come against lefties. His OBP and SLG% are both under .300. His OPS is .550. Basically, he hits like Jake Peavy against lefties (except Peavy’s SLG% is over .300 this year). Blum is definitely the guy to start against righties now, but he should never be hitting against lefties if it can be avoided.

But man was that an awesome hit tonight. Great win. CY was back to looking dominant again, too.
