| sp: | Jake Peavy (12-5, 2.21) vs Bronson Arroyo (5-12, 4.51) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com, B-R.com |
Went and watched Rush Hour 3 on Saturday. Wait till it comes out on cable. As Morrissey says, “that joke isn’t funny anymore.”
On another note, the Padres have played 116 games this year. For reference, here are their best records at this point in the season throughout history:
- 1998: 75-41
- 1984: 69-47
- 1992: 64-52
- 1982: 62-54
1985: 62-54
2004: 62-54
2007: 62-54
We’re still in good shape here, folks. Let’s take the series…

I hope “Everyday is Like Sunday” — Jake Peavy pitching gives us a good chance to win. Go Padres.
August 12, 2007 at 9:18 am
any chance they call up Antonelli?
August 12, 2007 at 9:18 am
“don’t stop believing, hold onto that feeling…” And for you young people, that isn’t the ending to the Sopranos.
August 12, 2007 at 9:28 am
#2: Doubt it. Maybe in September, but even then…
#3: Didn’t the White Sox use that during their World Series run in ‘05?
August 12, 2007 at 9:55 am
Jake Peavy is 7-2 after a Padres loss this season. How about a happy flight home today?!
August 12, 2007 at 9:56 am
Oh, and the Reds DFA’d Mark Bellhorn today if the Padres wanna scrape the barrel for more bench help. Kidding.
August 12, 2007 at 10:10 am
#3: Also, you’ve inspired a new poll…
August 12, 2007 at 10:17 am
So, I guess OG likes that park in Cincy.
August 12, 2007 at 10:21 am
I wonder if the lack of a player to rally around contributes to the negativity.
August 12, 2007 at 10:23 am
8: No kidding eh? When was the last time a Padre player hit 4 HRs in a 3 game series?
August 12, 2007 at 10:24 am
We scored a point! I like when we score points.
Time to move Giles the Elder out of the leadoff spot?
August 12, 2007 at 10:31 am
After going curveball crazy the past two starts, Jake came out and through fastballs on every pitch but the last one of that inning.
August 12, 2007 at 10:35 am
11: Never! OG is thriving in that spot and he’s still one of our best on-base guys. Besides, 3 games does not make a season…
August 12, 2007 at 10:42 am
Love those eight-pitch innings. I hope Jake and Bard noticed that the plate umpire is giving them that pitch low and away.
August 12, 2007 at 10:47 am
Nice stroke by Adrian, just bad luck there.
August 12, 2007 at 10:50 am
Be… aggressive. Be, be… aggressive!
August 12, 2007 at 10:50 am
That was an unexpected clutch hit from Greene. I’ll take it.
August 12, 2007 at 10:51 am
I don’t know why the crowd is booing Cameron; Ross was standing between him and the plate. Not a lot of options.
August 12, 2007 at 10:53 am
16: B-E-A-GG-R-E-SS-I-V-E……….
Not sure Cameron had another choice considering where the bat was sitting…
August 12, 2007 at 10:54 am
Thanks to Bronson Arroyo for throwing Khalil a fastball.
August 12, 2007 at 10:59 am
So did anyone see the replay? Was the catcher really blocking the plate, was that contact needed? I saw the bat might have been in the way. Not saying it was dirty, but …
August 12, 2007 at 11:00 am
Whoa, that was a little scary. Makes up for Ross’ bloop base hit, I guess…
August 12, 2007 at 11:02 am
#21: See #18. There was nowhere else for Cameron to go if he wanted to score the run.
August 12, 2007 at 11:04 am
Nifty play by Ensberg to end the inning. Anyone have a pitch count on Peavy through three?
August 12, 2007 at 11:07 am
24: 35
August 12, 2007 at 11:07 am
From what I head on the radio, it was go through Ross or not score the run. Considering our offensive struggles, I’ll take the run.
And 17: Khalil had a bunch of clutch hits on Friday nite. He hits pretty well with the bases juiced (not sure if this was the case in this AB or not, I didn’t see it). He gets a ton of flack, but Khalil hits a bunch of sac flys.
And that right there is why Adam Dunn should never be a Padre.
August 12, 2007 at 11:12 am
So Josh Bard has given up on hitting lefty? It’s funny because up until this year he really has not had a bad split between lefty and righty.
August 12, 2007 at 11:13 am
Okay, OG is officially ridiculous.
August 12, 2007 at 11:13 am
What is Giles smoking? I guess he’s feeling better!
August 12, 2007 at 11:13 am
OG should probably ask for a trade to the Reds and play here full-time.
August 12, 2007 at 11:13 am
What the hell is Brian Giles on? Sweet Jesus!
August 12, 2007 at 11:15 am
Hey Geoff,
How ’bout the U-T using the word “penurious” in one of their headlines (at least in the on-ine edition)? Is that somehow more palatable than “tightwads”?
August 12, 2007 at 11:21 am
43 pitches for Jake through 4.
August 12, 2007 at 11:22 am
Can we trade Brian to the Reds? Maybe they will want him after this series haha.
August 12, 2007 at 11:23 am
I wouldn’t be surprised if Brian Giles flirts with the Petco porch and starts hitting some homeruns at home as well. Wouldn’t that be something if Giles goes off and ends up hitting 15-20 homers on the season ?
Also, doesn’t make sense, with his experience in the heat of a pennant drive, to have Ensberg in this lineup everyday ? He brings a vet prescence on the diamond that I think will help the Pads.
The future is now, especially with a healthy Peavy and CY (who are having career years).
August 12, 2007 at 11:23 am
Jake looks Maddux-esque this game
August 12, 2007 at 11:25 am
35: I’d prefer Giles think of this series as a bit of luck and keep slapping line drives at Petco.
August 12, 2007 at 11:30 am
#32: Yeah, that was amusing. Both words, of course, miss the point that we’re in a pennant race…
August 12, 2007 at 11:33 am
anyone else stuck watching the Reds broadcasters who are treating the game like an afterthought?
August 12, 2007 at 11:33 am
Conceding the run…
August 12, 2007 at 11:33 am
The one thing with OG is that I don’t think he even tries to take swings like this at PETCO. Those are the swings we saw a lot of in 2004 and even into 2005 but since then I think he has just given up. Those balls die in the PETCO air. It’s nice that maybe he can silence some critics talking about how all his power is gone but I just think he is a good hitter that has totally changed his philiosophy because of his home park.
August 12, 2007 at 11:34 am
39: Yup… doesnt much matter to me, what they have been saying the whole serious has sounded like useless rambling
August 12, 2007 at 11:35 am
it doesn’t matter to me because the Padres are winning…but it is a bit annoying because they seem like they’re doing a radio talk show..
August 12, 2007 at 11:36 am
40: Conceding the run is absolutely the right call in that situation. Up 5 in the fifth inning, you just want outs and to limit the possibility of a big inning.
August 12, 2007 at 11:38 am
#39: Isn’t the season pretty much an afterthought for the Reds at this point?
August 12, 2007 at 11:38 am
44: I didnt say it was the wrong thing to do. I said they were doing it. I just wanted to see Jake throw another shut out.
August 12, 2007 at 11:40 am
65 pitches for Jake through 5
August 12, 2007 at 11:41 am
Now Bard’s hitting lefty?
August 12, 2007 at 11:42 am
Great hustle by Jake, but maybe he can turn down the intensity just a tad?
August 12, 2007 at 11:42 am
48: Ever since Joyner came, he has been hitting from a random sie of the plate. I guess they are working on something.
August 12, 2007 at 11:43 am
“Now if you’re a Red’s player right now and you were involved in that play, you should be embarrassed.” -Red’s announcer.
August 12, 2007 at 11:43 am
Hahaha, they’re intentionally walking OG. Boooooo! Give him his chance to hit more homers! He’s not going to get many more the rest of the year.
August 12, 2007 at 11:44 am
49: Its hard to ask a guy to stop having fun playing baseball. We just gotta hope he doesnt hurt himself.
August 12, 2007 at 11:45 am
And now the Reds announcers are on some tangent talking about Phil Nevin. The poor guy is taking crap when he hasn’t been on the team in 3 years..
August 12, 2007 at 11:46 am
Okay, this is a classic trouble inning for Jake… he just ran the bases aggressively and now…. (crossing fingers)…..
August 12, 2007 at 11:50 am
When did Carmelo Martinez st art playing left?
August 12, 2007 at 11:50 am
What the hell was that?
August 12, 2007 at 11:52 am
#56: It’s okay; he only has trouble with fly balls.
August 12, 2007 at 11:54 am
Ugh.
August 12, 2007 at 11:54 am
#53: Hard, but not impossible.
#55: Yep, here it comes. This looks a lot like the day game against the Snakes at Petco earlier in the season.
August 12, 2007 at 11:56 am
60: That error in left most likely wont help Jakes intensity.
August 12, 2007 at 11:57 am
60: That’s exactly the game I was thinking of I think… when he hit the triple and then fell apart….
August 12, 2007 at 11:58 am
#62: Thankfully, he gets out of it this time.
August 12, 2007 at 11:59 am
Could had been worse, we just gotta hang on. Hopefully we can depend on the ‘pen
August 12, 2007 at 12:01 pm
I’d like to see us pick up a couple insurance runs here.
August 12, 2007 at 12:04 pm
Great job by Cammy to take that ball the other way.
August 12, 2007 at 12:04 pm
Nice triple by Cam
August 12, 2007 at 12:05 pm
Gotta get Cameron in here and get a run back.
August 12, 2007 at 12:05 pm
Brutal AB by Adrian. Nobody up in the ‘pen; looks like we get another inning out of Jake. More runs would be real nice right about now.
August 12, 2007 at 12:06 pm
Awful AB by Gonzo there
August 12, 2007 at 12:07 pm
Khalil comes through again. He is having a terrific day.
August 12, 2007 at 12:08 pm
Khalil has had a couple of very nice games this week
August 12, 2007 at 12:08 pm
Khalil’s having himself a fine day at the dish. In fact, he’s had a great series.
August 12, 2007 at 12:08 pm
Nice bloop by KG to score the run
August 12, 2007 at 12:08 pm
74: Bloop? That was a solid “single” that became a double.
August 12, 2007 at 12:09 pm
it would be nice if we could get any sort of consistancy from him down the stretch
August 12, 2007 at 12:11 pm
Nice hustle out of the box by Mackowiak.
75: Looked like a bloop single to me, they were playing Greene pretty deep and with Dunn in LF anything an turn into a double.
August 12, 2007 at 12:19 pm
Damn, looked to be a fairly quick inning for Jake too
August 12, 2007 at 12:19 pm
well that makes that hit by Khalil a whole lot bigger…
August 12, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Wish we could do things the easy way just once..
August 12, 2007 at 12:24 pm
#77: He shot the gap. Not sure which Dunn you’ve been watching this weekend, but the one I’m seeing has made some real strong throws.
Meanwhile, Jake is done. Here’s hoping Bell can put out the fire…
August 12, 2007 at 12:27 pm
C’mon Heat!
August 12, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Damnit! Khalil’s gotta make a better throw.
August 12, 2007 at 12:29 pm
83: Of course, if he doesn’t get to it, it’s a run. So I guess I can’t complain too much. Plus, it really looked like Adrian’s foot was on the bag.
August 12, 2007 at 12:30 pm
….and breathe. We gotta put up some more runs. Nothing feels safe in this ballpark.
August 12, 2007 at 12:31 pm
#80: Where is the fun in that?
August 12, 2007 at 12:31 pm
Wow that was scary
August 12, 2007 at 12:34 pm
81: Strong throws yes, but he has misplayed nearly every ball hit to him. Shooting the gap to me seems like it should be a line drive, I saw a bloop, but hey I’m watching it on MLB.tv so what do I know
August 12, 2007 at 12:36 pm
The Dodgers are getting pounded again in St. Louis, 8-2 in the fourth.
August 12, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Wow, B. Giles was intentionally walked twice today, that matches his total for the year.
August 12, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Is Geoff Blum really one of our three best hitters? Why is he batting second?
August 12, 2007 at 12:38 pm
C’mon Cameron. All I’m asking for is a single. That’s it.
August 12, 2007 at 12:39 pm
91: To answer my own question, he’s not. Cameron is a better hitter. Why isn’t Cameron hitting second?
August 12, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Yuck.
August 12, 2007 at 12:41 pm
91: .342/.414/.434/.848 since the ASB, Bud is going with the hot bat I guess
August 12, 2007 at 12:42 pm
93: I guess it didnt really matter anyway
August 12, 2007 at 12:42 pm
96: Well, Blum probably shouldn’t be hitting in the top five spots, but yeah.
August 12, 2007 at 12:43 pm
Thank you, Adam Dunn. Weak grounder on the first pitch. We’ll take it.
August 12, 2007 at 12:45 pm
#97: The scary thing is that since May 1, only Brian Giles has a higher OBP than Blum for the Padres.
August 12, 2007 at 12:45 pm
97: Well most of our roster shouldnt be hitting in the top five spots either haha .
August 12, 2007 at 12:47 pm
99: If Blum keeps hitting I guess we cant really argue the move to keep him in the line-up.
August 12, 2007 at 12:49 pm
Blum is fine with me if the alternative is Marcus Giles at this point.
Good work by Bell again. Bell has a strong argument for team MVP.
August 12, 2007 at 12:53 pm
KG loves the GAB.
August 12, 2007 at 1:00 pm
I guess Guardado settles the debate for Bard whether he should hit left or right by being left-handed.
August 12, 2007 at 1:00 pm
You realize how lucky you are as a Pads fan when you hear the Reds announcers spending 10 minutes to talk about the future’s of Mike Stanton and Eddie Guard. and how they fit into the 2008 Reds bullpen.
August 12, 2007 at 1:01 pm
Our offense sucks.
August 12, 2007 at 1:02 pm
Yes!!!!! We get to see OG again!
August 12, 2007 at 1:02 pm
Big 2 run double for Bardo. That ought to dampen the hopes of a 9th inning comeback today.
August 12, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Ooh, maybe we’ll get to watch Sledge try for hi first hit off of a lefty this year!
11 (!!!) extra base hits by the Padres today.
August 12, 2007 at 1:05 pm
First hit off of a lefty for Sledge
