IGD: Padres @ Mariners (19 May 07)
Sat, May 19, 2007by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Greg Maddux (3-2, 3.20 ERA) vs Horacio Ramirez (3-2, 6.40 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
Why would a team trade Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez? On an unrelated but impressive note, LynchMob pointed out in the comments that Class-A Lake Elsinore beat Lancaster, 30-0, on Friday night. Three players had five or more hits.

Why would a team trade Chris Snelling for Jose Vidro, with limited salary help for Vidro, when Vidro is only going to DH?
On an unrelated note, the Astros gave Adam Everett the day off today by playing Mark Loretta at short. I remember bringing back Loretta was discussed here and some wondered if we would be capable of spelling Greene at short. The Astros apparently think so, though I bet if Everett went down for an extended period of time they’d want a better defensive option there.

Nice to see every team in the NL West lost last night, except the Padres. It starting to look like Arizona is on their way to another loss tonight. Just need to keep an eye on the Dodger game (tied 1-1 in the 2nd). I’d just like to see us sit in 1st place for a little while before the break.
May 19, 2007 at 6:48 pm
Roof is open. Chilly and breazy at Safeco tonight. Those hits that weren’t making it to the fence last night might have a chance this evening.
May 19, 2007 at 6:58 pm
Arizona has come back to tie it up 7-7. Dodgers are down by one.
May 19, 2007 at 7:04 pm
Was the Storm playing the Jethawks T-Ball team last night?
May 19, 2007 at 7:04 pm
Roof now closed.
May 19, 2007 at 7:06 pm
Storm jumped out to a 9-1 lead after two tonight, game is now 10-8 in the sixth:

Blanks and Huffman have homered. One of the Lancaster guys has three home runs. That park is nuts.
May 19, 2007 at 7:12 pm
NOG!
Disappointing to see that Sexson isn’t playing tonight. He was one of our assets last night.
May 19, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Geoff Blum is DH-ing for us tonight. Yes, we should have picked up Craig Wilson.
May 19, 2007 at 7:14 pm
It’s ok, TD, Willie Bloomquist is playing for them tonight, and he can be just as much of an asset for us.
May 19, 2007 at 7:14 pm
9: Shoulda stayed with Branyan.

Notes from AP:
SAN DIEGO: Right-hander Chris Young, coming off his 8-1 victory Friday over the Mariners, is quietly having an outstanding season, now 5-3 with a 2.89 earned run average. He held the Mariners to six hits and one run in 6 2-3 innings. Manager Bud Black said Young, whose fastball ranges from 87 to 93, doesn’t need velocity to be effective. “He’s one of those pitchers who doesn’t pitch to a gun,” Black said. “There are pitchers that do, which I think is a mistake. But I don’t see Chris changing his mechanics or altering his delivery to try to get more velocity.” Black said Young’s advantage is his 6-foot-10 frame, as he is able to deliver the pitch from a plane higher than most batters see. “That’s the advantage,” Black added. “It’s just coming from a different angle. That’s the physics.” … According to research forwarded by veteran right-hander Greg Maddux, only 17 percent of runners who steal a base end up scoring. In Friday’s win, the Padres was unfazed by four steals, the most for the Mariners since they had five on Sept. 3 last season. None of the stealers scored.
I’m not sure why Maddux would forward that info to AP, but it’s interesting.
May 19, 2007 at 7:21 pm
#12: My understanding is that Maddux forwarded that info to CY.
Ugh. Jose Guillen? Ugh.
May 19, 2007 at 7:24 pm
OK, now I get it.
May 19, 2007 at 7:24 pm
That was a fortunate bounce. Maddux is getting tagged.
May 19, 2007 at 7:25 pm
That looked like it hit off his cleats.
May 19, 2007 at 7:26 pm
That was a veteran strike call.
May 19, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Maddux - location = batting practice. Hopefully he gets it figured out soon.
May 19, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Kouuuuuuuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
May 19, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Kouz does it again. That’s a strong dude.
May 19, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Here we go Ben B.
May 19, 2007 at 7:40 pm
There we go Ben B.
May 19, 2007 at 7:41 pm
I’m declaring that a successful at bat by Blum. He saw 7 pitches, fouled off a two strike pitch, and Gameday says he hit a line drive. Can’t really ask for more than that from Blum.
Angels have added 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-2.
May 19, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Willie Bloomquist is the Geoff Blum of the Mariners.
May 19, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Unfortunatly Arizona won.
May 19, 2007 at 7:45 pm
Who made up the nickname ‘Silent L’?
May 19, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Ichiro should change his last name to Lamborgini. That dude is ‘hella fast’ (as my 20 yr. old would say).
May 19, 2007 at 7:53 pm
This is not good. Maddux is just getting painted all over the field.
May 19, 2007 at 7:54 pm
The two infield hits didn’t help either.
May 19, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Ok, Jack Cust homered again, but it was against the Giants. Clearly trading him to the A’s was just a plot to hurt the Giants, and thus completely justified.
May 19, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Stop making outs on the first pitch!
May 19, 2007 at 8:03 pm
I hate to say this, but I think Bud should start warming up the Bull Pen.
May 19, 2007 at 8:04 pm
here I thought I’d check up on the boys to see how they were doing after the rousing game yesterday. Guess I’m better off working on the “honey do” list instead….
May 19, 2007 at 8:05 pm
The whole Jack Cust saga was an elaborate plan conjured up by Billy Beane and KT to deceive potential trade partners into thinking that KT is fallible. That’s why the A’s waived him and the Padres traded him. And now you know the rest of the story…
May 19, 2007 at 8:08 pm
34: Brilliant! And just like KT to remind everyone this with a guy that wasn’t going to play much if he were on the Padres.
May 19, 2007 at 8:12 pm
9 pitches and three groundouts. Way to go, Padres hitters.
May 19, 2007 at 8:25 pm
I blame Geoff Blum for all that’s gone wrong this game.
May 19, 2007 at 9:08 pm
A base knock here might score 2.
May 19, 2007 at 9:10 pm
38: Or, one.
May 19, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Time for a A-Gon Homer!
May 19, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Wow. Lining into a double play? Wow.
May 19, 2007 at 9:27 pm
Why can’t these hits come when we have the bases loaded?
May 19, 2007 at 9:30 pm
Oh crap, Silent L is on deck.
May 19, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Black is one hitter late in putting Branyan in the on-deck circle (i.e. BLUM SUCKS AND SHOULD BE PINCH HIT FOR).
May 19, 2007 at 9:34 pm
Silent L needs to put the lighter down, step back from the crack pipe, and pull his head out of his ass.
May 19, 2007 at 9:38 pm
The continued existence of Blum on the roster, and the continued use of him in positions he should never be (like when he pinch-hits in high leverage positions or DHs) make me question my faith in Black, Towers, and Alderson. Why is he still on the team? Why haven’t Towers or Alderson had a talk with Black about his ridiculous usage of Blum? Why hasn’t Towers picked up a better right handed hitter to replace him or Robles? It seems so obvious to me; what am I missing?
May 19, 2007 at 9:44 pm
I feel like Randy Quade sitting in the stands in left field in the movie ‘Major League’ ragging on Charlie Sheen when it comes to Silent L.
May 19, 2007 at 9:45 pm
Why Robles instead of Branyan or Sledge? Both are better hitters and more likely to reach base, and you’re not reserving either for when runners reach base because the top of the lineup is coming up.
May 19, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Good play by Beltre.
48: I agree.
May 19, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Arg. Let’s get ‘em tommorow.
May 19, 2007 at 9:53 pm
It was a nice little rally, but oh well. Good to see Kouz is still hitting.
Maybe if Adrian doesn’t hit the line drive right to the second baseman with the bases loaded things are different.
