television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Chris Young (4-3, 3.11 ERA) vs Miguel Batista (3-3, 6.98 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
What can I say about this storied and sometimes bitter rivalry that hasn’t already been said? The history, the drama, the passion, the intrigue, the intensity, the sushi, the double soy lattes — I hardly know where to start.
So I won’t. Go Padres!

hey buddies
May 18, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Alright NOG!
May 18, 2007 at 7:12 pm
God, I hate inter-league games.
May 18, 2007 at 7:13 pm
perfect bunt….im going to take credit for picking up cruz
May 18, 2007 at 7:14 pm
A sac bunt in the first inning by the guy who has been our best hitter?
May 18, 2007 at 7:15 pm
but but but noooooo
May 18, 2007 at 7:15 pm
A-Gone for a double!
May 18, 2007 at 7:16 pm
Does the fact that double was a ground-rule one rob us of a run?
May 18, 2007 at 7:16 pm
Who is our DH for tonight?
May 18, 2007 at 7:17 pm
9: Branyan.
May 18, 2007 at 7:19 pm
10: Thanks. Not a bad choice.
May 18, 2007 at 7:19 pm
God damn ground rule doubles. And then Khalil can’t get it done.
God that’s a frustrating first inning.
May 18, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Absolutely. Branyan’s certainly better than the Mariners’ DH, Jose Vidro, so we get an advantage by playing in Seattle.
May 18, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Ugh, that was telegraphed.
May 18, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Ugh. And it’s only first inning. I wanna hear the Coach defend that 1st inning sac bunt. 2 doubles and no runs?
May 18, 2007 at 7:22 pm
I was going to write “that’s effectively a double” but then Ichiro had stolen second before I could post it.
May 18, 2007 at 7:25 pm
XX put the over/under for stolen bases this weekend by Ichiro at 5. I’m taking the over.
May 18, 2007 at 7:28 pm
Nice to see that other teams strand lead off base runners too.
May 18, 2007 at 7:29 pm
that bunt was stupid.
May 18, 2007 at 7:31 pm
How does Safeco play in terms of pitchers vs. hitters ballparks.
May 18, 2007 at 7:33 pm
It’s a pitcher’s park. Big, big outfield.
Nice to see roughing up Zito in his return to Oakland. He his given up 3 runs through 1 inning.
May 18, 2007 at 7:36 pm
21: Thanks Ben. I had no idea how it would play. The first inning was promising, but we’ve played true to form thus far.
May 18, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Roof is closed also. ‘Dead’ air?
May 18, 2007 at 7:39 pm
This series already has me worried. The Tokyo, I mean Seatle Mariners ‘owned’ us last year taking 5 out of 6.
May 18, 2007 at 7:43 pm
24: The Mariners’ starting pitching is pretty bad, King Felix aside. And their lineup ain’t too great either, with Raul Ibanez experiencing OG-level sudden decline and complete loss of power and Sexson really, really struggling so far.
May 18, 2007 at 7:45 pm
25: Sorry, I just feel the mojo.
May 18, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Anyone else listening to this tripe on MLB.TV? I officially detest the old Seattle announcer that sounds like he had a coronary when Johjima threw out NOG.
May 18, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Chris, Chris, you CANNOT walk Ichiro. It’s an automatic double. Just throw it down the middle, Ichiro doesn’t haven’t much power.
May 18, 2007 at 7:57 pm
I can’t recall, has Bard thrown anybody out at 2nd yet this season?
May 18, 2007 at 7:59 pm
It doesn’t matter how well Bard throws, because CY gives him zero chance of throwing out a fast runner like Ichiro.
So we have two doubles in an inning and don’t score, but the Mariners get a walk and a pop up single and score.
May 18, 2007 at 8:03 pm
25: You weren’t off base about Sexson.
May 18, 2007 at 8:07 pm
They outa tell Beltre this is a Baseball game and not Soccer.
May 18, 2007 at 8:10 pm
At least we got an RBI out of that.
May 18, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Was that as weak a hit as Gameday makes it look?
May 18, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Bard has two caught steals, I think, all in last few games.
May 18, 2007 at 8:11 pm
34: No. I was drilled right down the 3rd base line and hit the base.
May 18, 2007 at 8:12 pm
36: ‘It’
May 18, 2007 at 8:13 pm
Howdy, folks. Nice PA by Shakespeare.
May 18, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Disclaimer: I’m on some heavy pain meds tonight for an old injury. Ergo, spelling and grammer will completely suck in most of my posts.
May 18, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Indeed. And I was just ranting and raving to myself about how the Padres never work the pitcher and take walks.
May 18, 2007 at 8:16 pm
Damn, that was ball four.
May 18, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Kouz, baby! It’s all about Kouz!
May 18, 2007 at 8:18 pm
KOUUUUUUZ!
May 18, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Russ Branyan = Adam Dunn - Home Runs!!!!!
on another note… KOUZ!!!!!!!!!!
May 18, 2007 at 8:18 pm
41: No kidding, but KK hits paydirt with that deep right knock.
May 18, 2007 at 8:19 pm
NOG is hitting pretty good tonight.
May 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm
I think if NOG hadn’t shattered his bat, that would have scored two more.
May 18, 2007 at 8:25 pm
SD4 just freaked me out. They had the score 3-4 (now fixed)! I’m thinking to myself that this is some damn good Percocet.
Now Cammi with a stupid error. Grrrr.
May 18, 2007 at 8:26 pm
48: It’s ok, he was going to steal second anyway.
May 18, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Beltrane trying to atone for his error.
May 18, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Hallelujah, Ichiro has been retired.
May 18, 2007 at 8:43 pm
AND KHALIL WALKS!
May 18, 2007 at 8:57 pm
Well, CY looks good so far on Gameday, although maybe a few more pitches than you’d like.
In other news, Dodgers trail the other “LA” team 5-1 in the sixth, the Giants are losing 7-2 in the sixth, and the Rockies and the D-Backs already lost.
May 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Ugh. Good thing we didn’t have a runner on first when Cruz hit that double…
May 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm
What Geoff said.
May 18, 2007 at 9:02 pm
Cedric with 3 hits for Ft Wayne tonight … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....p;did=milb … no XBH …
May 18, 2007 at 9:04 pm
OG makes it moot point. Nice hit to the opposite field.
May 18, 2007 at 9:04 pm
That will score Cruz! Finally OG gets a knock.
May 18, 2007 at 9:04 pm
The Storm must have made a 2-point conversion … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_lncafa_1 … up 22-0 after 6 … that’s *not* a typo! Pairs of HRs by Huffman and Cooper …
May 18, 2007 at 9:05 pm
Attaway to have your brother’s back, OG!
May 18, 2007 at 9:07 pm
Headley with HR #7 and S Thompson with an OK outing for AA San Antonio … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_sanaax_1
May 18, 2007 at 9:09 pm
24: I take it back.
May 18, 2007 at 9:12 pm
62: Shhh. Don’t take it back until the game is over if we win.
May 18, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Who names their kid Yuniesky (sp?)?
May 18, 2007 at 9:13 pm
Most of us love Matty V, right? Then he goes and compares Bentancourt’s “bad-ball” tendencies to Vlady Guerrero’s.
Results, Matty, results. There’s no comparison.
May 18, 2007 at 9:13 pm
Bell at this point is probably a good move.
May 18, 2007 at 9:14 pm
64 … Mr & Mrs Betancourt … but I suspect you already knew that … or was it a trick question?
May 18, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Hey guys, I just realized a great benefit of interleague play in AL parks: Geoff Blum can’t pinch hit for the pitcher!
May 18, 2007 at 9:17 pm
Nice going by Bell.
May 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm
Mark Grant’s Motoworld commercials are really bad.
May 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Nice double for Greene.
May 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm
Origin of NOG?
May 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm
Cammy RBI! Right on.
May 18, 2007 at 9:22 pm
What is up with the doubles? We now have 7 doubles by 7 players, yet no triples or home runs.
May 18, 2007 at 9:23 pm
I should hastily add that I am by no means complaining. Doubles are awesome.
May 18, 2007 at 9:24 pm
74: It’s two for one night at Safeco. I think it’s ladies night tomorrow.
May 18, 2007 at 9:25 pm
I’ve run out of adjectives for Branyan’s home runs.
May 18, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Branyan was a really good call for DH tonight! Long ball just crushed over the center field wall.
May 18, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Damn you, Branyan, you were only supposed to double.
May 18, 2007 at 9:26 pm
Re: 44, that was his 3rd in the past week
May 18, 2007 at 9:26 pm
I hate to bring the cliche here, but - ummm, save some for tomorrow night, guys?
May 18, 2007 at 9:29 pm
Looks really good standings wise for the Padres in the NL West. I think we are the only team winning.
May 18, 2007 at 9:32 pm
82 cont.: tonight
May 18, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Can someone please tell me where OG and NOG came from? Is it just Older Giles and Non-Older Giles?
May 18, 2007 at 9:37 pm
OG - orange Giles (Brian)
NOG - non-orange Giles (Marcus)
May 18, 2007 at 9:41 pm
Great recovery by Bell. Damn, that was a bullet at his head.
May 18, 2007 at 9:42 pm
orange?
May 18, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Mark Grant is now having post traumatic syndrom disorders from baseball?
May 18, 2007 at 9:45 pm
87: Yep. All that time spent tanning. I believe Clayton is the one responsible for labeling Brian orange when he would bemoan orange Giles’ groundouts to second base in clutch situations last year.
May 18, 2007 at 9:45 pm
88: correction…stress.
May 18, 2007 at 9:46 pm
IJSKG: Orange for his “unusual” colored tan.
May 18, 2007 at 9:47 pm
59 … Storm tack on 5 more … now up 27-0 … again, that is *not* a typo … HR by Kyle Blanks …
May 18, 2007 at 9:48 pm
92: That has to be some kind of record.
May 18, 2007 at 9:51 pm
LM: How many hits for the Storm in that game?
May 18, 2007 at 9:56 pm
24 hits + 8 walks … talk about “save some for tomorrow”
May 18, 2007 at 9:58 pm
That’ll help the ole Pythagorean record.
May 18, 2007 at 10:00 pm
95 … check that … Antonelli finished the splurge with a 2-run double … final line for Storm: 30 runs on 28 hits … Jose Lobaton was the slacker: 0-for-3 with 0 RBI … *everyone* else had 4-10 hits+rbi … that’s one amazing box score … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_lncafa_1
May 18, 2007 at 10:03 pm
Ha! You can’t steal bases if we don’t care about you stealing, Ichiro!
May 18, 2007 at 10:04 pm
Nice.
May 18, 2007 at 10:16 pm
Lesson from the Storm. If your top 5 hitters go 22-32 with 6 2B and 5 HR you are likely to win the game.
May 18, 2007 at 10:21 pm
That LE boxscore is insane. I’ve never seen anything like that. I don’t know what impresses me more: the 30 runs scored, or the fact that it was a shut out.
May 18, 2007 at 10:26 pm
I was kinda hoping that Lancaster would score 31 in the bottom of the 9th for the greatest come-from-behind-victory ever
100 … good point!
May 19, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Here’s the recap of the Storm game … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....;fext=.jsp … 1 hit short of record for hits in a game … and 4 runs short of record for runs in a game …
May 19, 2007 at 2:28 pm
It made the front page of ESPN’s baseball site. Pretty cool.
