I have some friends who have been to Ulan Bator … they didn’t report any MLB sightings … they are going back next month … want me to have them pick up you a souvenier, GY?

April 18, 2007 at 7:00 pm
Carillo is pitching tonight @ Portland … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_poraaa_1 … McAnulty is not in the lineup … perhaps tomorrow …
April 18, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Game on … Wells not starting out like he’s planning on going 6+ …
April 18, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Cameron needs to start fielding his position.
April 18, 2007 at 7:13 pm
6 - seriously. biggest shock so far this season is his bad fielding
April 18, 2007 at 7:14 pm
Thirteen pitchers? Because of three games in Coors? hmm
April 18, 2007 at 7:15 pm
I hate the hit and run, but that was pretty.
April 18, 2007 at 7:16 pm
8: Because the bullpen has thrown a ton of innings lately.
April 18, 2007 at 7:20 pm
10: I understand that, but this seems a bit extreme.
Here’s a question, are there any statistics that support that one more pitcher in the bullpen leads to better success in Coors?
April 18, 2007 at 7:21 pm
11: It would seem to me that if you need the extra pitcher, you’re probably losing.
April 18, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Seems likely we’ll use the extra pitcher tonight … not sure that Coors is the dominant factor in the decision …
April 18, 2007 at 7:24 pm
After 1 inning …
Pitches-strikes - B Webb 20-16; D Wells 10-7.
Ground balls-fly balls - B Webb 1-0; D Wells 1-1.
Batters faced - B Webb 6; D Wells 4.
April 18, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Exciting inning.
April 18, 2007 at 7:27 pm
Nice to see Wells looking like he belongs in something over A ball
April 18, 2007 at 7:28 pm
should’ve gotten more off Webb there
April 18, 2007 at 7:29 pm
17: It certainly would have been nice especially after Cameron gifted the D’Backs a run in the top half.
April 18, 2007 at 7:29 pm
17 … yup, that has the look & feel of being something we’ll regret … and opportunity missed …
April 18, 2007 at 7:33 pm
OT … King Felix didn’t get out of the 1st inning tonight … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270418112 … whassup?
April 18, 2007 at 7:34 pm
20: Good. I’m told we’re supposed to dislike the Mariners.
April 18, 2007 at 7:35 pm
21 … ya, that’s why I thought it was worth mentioning … arch-rivals and all that … LOL …
April 18, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Wells get some value out of his AB …
April 18, 2007 at 7:40 pm
Sportsline.com’s “game center” shows NOG taking a called 3rd strike right in the middle of the strike zone … both vertically and horizontally … NOG musta been looking for something completly different than Webb threw … or the “game center” was off …
April 18, 2007 at 7:45 pm
Kouzy looking good in the field again tonight. If he keeps this up, it won’t be worth mentioning any longer.
April 18, 2007 at 7:46 pm
It was a nice two seam fastball or sinker that started out outside and ran back over the plate. Not down the middle, though. It was about belt high.
April 18, 2007 at 7:46 pm
Kouz has been playing well on D…
April 18, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Boomer at 40 pitches thru 3 innings … I take back comment #5
April 18, 2007 at 7:50 pm
The Nats wearing the VT hats today is pretty cool…
April 18, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Well that was ugly.
April 18, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Ouch … 3 Ks in bottom of 3rd … now 7 K’s for Webb … he’s at 46 pitches …
April 18, 2007 at 7:54 pm
re: 29
They did it last night also.
April 18, 2007 at 7:55 pm
yeah, definitely should have scored more in that first inning, Webb’s got the sinker going
April 18, 2007 at 7:56 pm
29 - as a grad of UVA, I’ve always loathed Va Tech, but that all seems pretty damn silly now
April 18, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Wells is looking sharp. D’Backs might want to start thinking about hitting more pop flies to Cammy.
April 18, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Wells at 46 pitches thru 4 … NICE!
April 18, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Wells looks great….of course our bats seem to be afraid of the ball at this point
April 18, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Nice PA by Kouzy.
April 18, 2007 at 8:03 pm
11: It’s not because of Coors. It’s because the BP has thrown something like 30 innings the last 4 games.
I turned on GameDay ten minutes ago. It told me it was the top of the second. Now its bottom 4. Is the game really going that fast?
April 18, 2007 at 8:04 pm
What’s with Webb throwing over to KK 2 times?
April 18, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Webb now at 62 pitches … yup, it’s going fast …
April 18, 2007 at 8:11 pm
The play-by-play looked dangerous for Wells that inning … but it went down 1-2-3 … now at 55 pitches thru 5 … keep that bully sittin’ down!
April 18, 2007 at 8:12 pm
routine fly ball to left….hard line drive to left and routine ground ball to 2nd… not really that bad of an inning.. and not a lot of pitches throw..
April 18, 2007 at 8:13 pm
Wells with a 5-pitch AB … sweet … dude is ON tonight!
April 18, 2007 at 8:13 pm
Impressive at bat by Wells. Fouled off a two strike pitch, made Webb throw 6 pitches, and then ended it by not striking out.
April 18, 2007 at 8:14 pm
it was an impressive at bat by the big guy… then NOG goes out and hacks first pitch and grounds out..
April 18, 2007 at 8:15 pm
43 … play-by-play i was looking said first fly ball was to “deep left” … and then he fell behind 3-1 on the last batter … those things, and the “hard line drive” in the middle AB seemed like early-warning-signs …
April 18, 2007 at 8:16 pm
NOG had a good pitch to hit, so it was probably a good decision to go after it. OG and Cameron had bad pitches to hit and swung at them poorly.
April 18, 2007 at 8:16 pm
What was that inning? Wells has a better AB than NOG and Cameron? The last three hitters see three pitches?
More of that Merv Magic.
April 18, 2007 at 8:16 pm
yep, definitely should’ve scored more in that 1st inning when the sinker was up
April 18, 2007 at 8:16 pm
47: the first was short of the warning track. It looked more impressive off the bat than it really was. The 2nd ball was hit hard…the last one was not hit well at all…
April 18, 2007 at 8:17 pm
The sabre side of me says “Lineup construction doesn’t matter.” The other side of me says “You don’t put your coldest hitter in the 3 hole.”
April 18, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Webb at 70 thru 5 … he’s on a pretty decent pace also …
April 18, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Wells looks very good tonight boys and girls…
April 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm
52: Lineup construction matters. It just doesn’t matter that much.
April 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm
I have to also say that I”m enjoying listening to the D-back announcers tonight as much as I’ve enjoyed any other teams announcers…
April 18, 2007 at 8:21 pm
If you’re the D’backs, don’t you come into this game tonight wanting to be patient and take as many pitches as you can to force Bud into the bullpen? Pays dividends tomorrow too.
April 18, 2007 at 8:22 pm
re: 52
It has nothing to do with cold. He isn’t a No. 3 hitter at any time.
April 18, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Wells has retired 18 in a row!!! (is that the longest streak so far this season?) … now at 66 pitches thru 6 … I’m impressed!
April 18, 2007 at 8:23 pm
58: Why’s that?
April 18, 2007 at 8:25 pm
57: I think that’s a great strategy for a veteran lineup relatively comfortable hitting behind in the count (can more or less count on strikes from Wells). doesn’t sound too much like the d-backs…
April 18, 2007 at 8:25 pm
57 … a bit late for that now …
But that kind of thinking doesn’t ever seem to happen … perhaps it’s not easy (and/or long-term beneficial) to be thinking about “be patient tonight” … I think a counter-arguement is that Wells is a control pitcher who’s past his prime and so it makes sense to be aggressive against him … if you hit him hard and early, then he’s KO’d and it’s win-win …
April 18, 2007 at 8:26 pm
Because I think you should put your best all-round hitter there (best OPS). Adrian Gonzalez, for example.
Then fourth, I would put Bard or Kouzmanoff, going into the season.
Of course, just about any order seems bad when half of the lineup is hitting poorly.
April 18, 2007 at 8:27 pm
Webb at 79 thru 6 … looking dominant also …
April 18, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Cameron is our second best hitter by OPS last year, I believe. I guess Bard had a higher OPS, but no one expects him to repeat his numbers from last year over the full season.
But yeah, ultimately it’s irrelevant today, when Kouzmanoff is the only one that’s had a couple good at bats.
April 18, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Tell me about the “infield single”?
April 18, 2007 at 8:33 pm
Bouncing grounder to Khalil’s right, back hands, jumps and throws to second, close play ruled safe but on slow-mo review they barely got him.
April 18, 2007 at 8:34 pm
65 … 2006 OPS rank was Bard, Adrian, Piazza, Cameron …
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....pe=batting
April 18, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Deep do-do … anybody warming up?
April 18, 2007 at 8:36 pm
Wells still looks fine. Neither hit was hit well at all, and the pitch that hit him was just a slow curve that broke too far and hit his foot.
April 18, 2007 at 8:37 pm
But, yes, Kevin Cameron is up.
April 18, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Blame that one on the first base ump. Quentin pretty clearly came around on his check swing on 1-2.
April 18, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Sorry, Jackson clearly did.
April 18, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Camy caught one? And they didn’t tag?
April 18, 2007 at 8:41 pm
One more, Boomer, one more!
April 18, 2007 at 8:42 pm
Great glove work by Cameron and Wells.
April 18, 2007 at 8:45 pm
That was a decent escape, let’s hope we can muster up a run or two…
April 18, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Wells got thru 7 in 85 pitches … very valuable!
Webb is at 90 now after 7 innings … and with 12 K’s, he seems to be going strong …
April 18, 2007 at 8:52 pm
career high Ks for Webb
April 18, 2007 at 8:53 pm
I love how fast Cameron works. They don’t have enough time to put up graphics between his pitches.
April 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm
74…if the runner had tagged…he would’ve been out by 20 feet on the throw from Cameron..it was very impressive.
April 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Hey boys…how about a couple hits here…Wells doesn’t deserve to lose this game..
April 18, 2007 at 8:58 pm
hey - okay, because I’m fat and apparently have weak calf muscles (I have now torn both calf muscles in 6 months), I missed the game up until now. Can someone explain quickly how Cameron gave up the first run this evening?
April 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Error by Young. We got the Cameron error back there.
April 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Webb’s pitches are staying up this inning. This is a good sign.
April 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Adrian’s AB here feels key …
April 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Ahead in count 2-0 …
April 18, 2007 at 9:02 pm
Respect for Adrian? Mixed with disrespect for Greene, etc?
April 18, 2007 at 9:03 pm
ANYONE? SEE Q: 83
April 18, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Here comes pitch #100 … on a 1-2 count to Khalil …
April 18, 2007 at 9:05 pm
great ab from KG!
April 18, 2007 at 9:06 pm
Greene … nice …
April 18, 2007 at 9:06 pm
89, sorry, i don”t know either…
April 18, 2007 at 9:06 pm
Now the Padres got a run off a CF error. There you go.
April 18, 2007 at 9:07 pm
C’mon rook (KK)!
April 18, 2007 at 9:08 pm
Everyone up for 6 more innings?
April 18, 2007 at 9:08 pm
at least we got Wells off the hook
April 18, 2007 at 9:09 pm
GameCenter makes it look like Webb played KK like a fiddle … going “down the ladder” … ie. first pitch strike called … then 2nd pitch down out of the strike zone with KK swining … then 3rd strike even lower for swinging strike 3 … classic Webb …
April 18, 2007 at 9:09 pm
96 … sure, I’m up for it … let’s go!
Ben B … can you answer Marsh’s question in #83?
April 18, 2007 at 9:10 pm
Yeah, Webb has had a few great sequences on hitters tonight. 13 Ks, I think.
April 18, 2007 at 9:10 pm
98: Cut him up like cake.
April 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Hoffman in for non-save situation.
April 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Wow, we go to Hoffy … wonder if Bud thought about letting KCamy go another inning?
April 18, 2007 at 9:12 pm
99, 83: Nope, I was late to the party too, not getting here until the second.
Apparently Black’s not planning on going 14, though, because Cameron only goes 1.
April 18, 2007 at 9:13 pm
103 … I guess with the 4-5-6 hitters coming up, you go to Hoffy … cool.
April 18, 2007 at 9:14 pm
104 … I hope we do go 14 … then let Blum hit … either way we win … either he comes thru and we literally win … or he blows it and bust the myth …
April 18, 2007 at 9:15 pm
LynchMob - can you throw me a bone here? How was Arizona’s first run Mike Cameron’s fault?? (it looks like you were blogging at that time)
April 18, 2007 at 9:17 pm
Oops, Hoffy diggin’ a hole …
April 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Consecutive walks by Hoffman, a rare happening.
April 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm
107 … I’m just “watching” at http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/.....418_ARI@SD … all I know is that Drew led off the game with a “double to center” …
April 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Whew … trouble averted …
If I’m Bud … I’m thinking about when to use McAnulty … and I’d like to see him hit for Laforest … even with short bench … and especially if KK gets on …
April 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm
The San Diego gun has Hoffman’s changeup coming in 12 mph slower than his fastball.
