IGD: Padres @ Dodgers (15 Apr 07)

first pitch: 5:05 p.m. PT
television: ESPN
matchup: Chris Young (1-0, 2.13 ERA) vs Randy Wolf (1-1, 3.75 ERA)
preview: Padres.com

Major League Baseball is branding this as the “Jackie Robinson Game.” As such, it will be televised on ESPN at a time that makes no sense whatsoever. Every member of the Dodgers will be wearing #42 in Robinson’s honor.

Others have pointed out the absurdity of “unretiring” a number that was retired in perpetuity (unless that word doesn’t mean what I think it means). Robinson deserves every possible accolade we can give him, and then some. That said, there are probably better ways to celebrate one of the game’s true pioneers. None, of course, will generate as much revenue as this — think of the uniform sales.

Anyway, you may want to find an alternate feed today if possible. There’s a real good chance the ESPN broadcasters won’t even acknowledge the Padres.

  1. 145: They have better things to do than to broadcast the action on the field.

  2. If you have a DVR, rewind it. It’s well worth seeing.

  3. 129: How can you ignore active players in a discussion of living players?

  4. The commentators on this game really suck. I can’t believe I’m actually wanting to hear Mug.

  5. 154: Joe Morgan is ridiculously bad at his job.

  6. Honestly, I’m not big on “God Bless America” at the seventh inning stretch, but if you’re going to do it, make sure it’s the actual song and not an individual singer’s “interpretation” of it.

  7. 153: I said I don’t count them unless they’ve played a long time. Pujols is great but how long has he played. 7 years? If you don’t include steroids in the discussion Bonds is clearly the best living hitter.

Man, this game is really an afterthought to ESPN.

  8. 157: Pujols has played 6 seasons and should only now be hitting his prime and he is clearly a better hitter than Aaron was.

  9. First chance to visit Ducksnorts during a game. Hoping our boys can rally in the last 2 innings here.

  10. Is there any chance that the umpiring is biased tonight due to the Jackie Robinson thing? Hmmm???

  11. Broxton coming in

  12. Welcome, Bob. If you’re who I think you are, I wish you guys were broadcasting this one. Let’s get some runs!

  13. 158: Over 6 seasons certainly, and he will probably keep playing like this for years. Without looking at the numbers I’d say A Rod is up there too, and he’s played longer.

I put a lot of weight on Aaron’s longevity and the era he played. Again, not saying he’s best but I don’t think Morgan was out of line with the statement, especially since Hank was right there. I’m no mind reader but I’m sure Morgan thinks all modern players are inferior to the greats of his era. In his mind there’s probably no doubt Aaron is the greatest. Of course he probably would have called Willie Mays the greatest if he was there.

  14. for some reason no web page is working for be except this one

unfortunately, we’re not talking about the game in here either!

  15. Linebrink coming in now for some work.

  16. 163: Well, what about Musial, Mays and Allen?

  17. Hiya Geoff! Yep, I’m that guy. Sitting here in LA waiting to head to ChiTown

  18. I don’t know that the umpiring is biased so much as we’re having trouble bouncing back from C.Y.’s poor start. I think that C.Y. was out of sorts… he certainly may have been affected by the emotion. He also may have been thinking about the record, or he might have simply had his normal routine thrown off enough by the ceremonies that it made a difference.

Morgan is more than a little ridiculous. Joe, my son doesn’t know about Jackie because of ESPN. A little egocentric there, maybe?

  19. 160:

Continuing the other night’s discussion, are you the guy from “Silver Spoons” and “NYPD Blue”?

  20. Is this Bob Chandler?

  21. Nice to have you here, Bob…

BTW, I think Dave Winfield represented the Padres and San Diego very well there. The man is a class act.

  22. I don’t think we’re coming back tonight, gang. Considering the two pitching staffs in question, I find the scoring in this series quite out of whack.

  23. 169: Ack! I’m a nobody as far as that goes. I just happen to have had that name before he did.

  24. 170. ChyronBob, with Channel 4 Padres.

  25. And I just can’t WAIT for the flight outta here! That last shot makes me wanna toss the scorecard away.

  26. I really enjoyed the Jane Mitchell interview with Bob. Made me want to buy his book.

  27. 175. Better tonight than during a closer game…

  28. Saito coming in . . . that’ll do the trick.

  29. Bob, what was your take on the J.Robinson thing tonight?

  30. I just posted a chart of CY’s fastballs tonight over at FriarWatch.com. It shows what we all saw: he was all over the place and when was in the strike zone he got hit.

  31. It does seem weird that this many runs were scored in an April series in Chavez Ravine. Is the weather unseasonably strange out there?

  32. Overall, I think the JR salute was pretty well done here at the stadium. He had a remarkable influence, needless to say, and it was nice how they handled things. I imagine ESPN has gone overboard though, judging from the comments.

  33. Adrian Gonzalez…2 for 13 in the series. That hurt us… Cameron is still slumping bad…

  34. Weather here is a bit cooler than usual, but expect a 20 degree drop when we play in Chicago tomorrow.

  35. Hope the boys rest on the flight. Gonna arrive around 4AM in Chicago.

  36. So much for that. We’ll have to pay them back when they come to San Diego…

  37. Thanks for dropping in Bob. You are as much Mr. San Diego as Tony G. and Jerry Coleman!

  38. CY just didn’t have it tonight, and that pretty much set the tone. Still trying to find consistency throughout this lineup too.

  39. Bus at 9:45-ish.

  40. Anthony… nice work. Yeah, Chris just didn’t have it. Maybe I’ll actually write about baseball tonight. My post this morning was more about politics…

  41. Thanks guys for letting me be a part of your community. Hope to give you a better show tomorrow!

  42. Bob, don’t be a stranger. When I get a copy of your book, would you sign it for me?

  43. I’m not Bob Chandler, Rick, but enjoy the book. I know Bob, and he is as fine a man as there is to talk to.

  44. Now I feel like an idiot.

  45. Even when we were only down 3 it seemed like we were getting blown out. Blame it all on ESPN, we’ll get back in the W column when Channel 4 is back on the job.

  46. Thanks for coming by Bob…..unfortunate game tonight…but we’ll be ready for the Cubs tomorrow…

  47. I’m sorry for any identity confusion I may have caused you, Rick. I’m the guy providing the stats and graphics on Channel 4 Padres.

  48. Cubbies got skunked at Wrigley today . . . hopefully Hensley can bring some more of that tomorrow!

  49. That’s even better (I think). I’ve been teaching myself MS Exel and using the Padres as my database.

  50. 197: I had to start using my full name because someone thought I was Rick Suttcliff.
