IGD: Padres @ Diamondbacks (24 Apr 07)
Tue, Apr 24, 2007by Geoff Young
first pitch: 6:40 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: David Wells (0-1, 5.06 ERA) vs Randy Johnson (0-0, –)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
David Wells? Randy Johnson? I think Messrs. Flansburgh and Linnell said it best:
You’re older than you’ve ever been.
And now you’re even older.
And now you’re even older.
And now you’re even older.
You’re older than you’ve ever been.
And now you’re even older.
And now you’re older still.
Johnson makes his first start since returning to the Diamondbacks. Unfortunately he’s had tremendous success against just about everyone on the current Padres roster. Combined, they’re batting just .124/.154/.301 against Johnson in 117 plate appearances. Brian Giles and Mike Cameron account for 60 of those, and it ain’t pretty — they have five hits and 30 strikeouts between them.
The good news? I dunno, I was hoping you might have some. ![]()

OK, here’s some good news … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....;fext=.jsp … carrying forward news that TW posted in previous thread … one our minor league pitchers (Drew Miller) toss’d 7 no-hit innings tonight … and in the same game Cedric (The Great) was 2-for-4 with the lone RBI in the game, and a SB …

San Antonio won 2-0 over Frisco (Rangers)
Sean Thompson had men in scoring position in each of the first three innings and allowed the leadoff man to reach base in four of the first five but managed to come away unscathed, thanks in part to Drew Macias who threw out a runner at home plate to end the second inning. He made the pitches when they counted, not allowing a run over 5.2 innings, walking four and giving up six hits while striking out three – seeing his ERA dip to 0.40 on the season. The lefty has allowed one earned run over four starts spanning 22.1 innings, moving to 3-1 on the season.

OT … for your pre-game pleasure … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns … the story of the 2 pitchers who have given up HRs to 4 consecutive hitters … a good read.

April 24, 2007 at 6:31 pm
4 … that Mike Johnson (with HR #3 tonight for AA San Antonio) is Khalil’s teammate from Clemson that we took in the same draft … fyi.
April 24, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Isn’t the good news that he’s a rusty, crippled, old ****?
At least Wells is just a crippled, old ****.
Advantage: Padres!!!
April 24, 2007 at 6:40 pm
6: be nice to see M Johnson have a healthy year … he has the power just never makes it through the year … reminds me of his teammate Khalil …. hmmm what’s with Clemson
April 24, 2007 at 6:41 pm
Damn, nothing wrong with Johnson’s slider.
April 24, 2007 at 6:44 pm
is OG striking out more this year than in the past ?
April 24, 2007 at 6:44 pm
For those of us with MLB.TV, it’s not the Padres vs. the D’backs, it’s Randy Johnson hero worship nite.
April 24, 2007 at 6:46 pm
11: that’s why I listen to the radio on MLB and put the TV to the MLB extr innings ….. don’t have to listen to all the “RANDY” stuff
April 24, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Nice Kouzzzzz
April 24, 2007 at 6:49 pm

April 24, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Shoot, Khalil killed that ball. Tough break short-hopping the wall there.
April 24, 2007 at 6:55 pm
I’d say that we were robbed of a run by that ball bouncing over the wall, but it’s Agon running the bases…who are we kidding?
April 24, 2007 at 6:55 pm

April 24, 2007 at 7:04 pm

April 24, 2007 at 7:06 pm

April 24, 2007 at 7:21 pm

April 24, 2007 at 7:22 pm
ooops that’s jumping
April 24, 2007 at 7:23 pm

Chris Young double off the center field wall
April 24, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Thanks 41. Great turn on that DP.
Bats need to come alive. Pads just need to realize that if they sit on the fastball they can crush the **** out of it tonite.
April 24, 2007 at 7:27 pm

April 24, 2007 at 7:36 pm
NICE NOG
April 24, 2007 at 7:37 pm
and there is one for OG
April 24, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Wells isn’t pitching poorly, he’s just had a few hard hit balls hurt him.
April 24, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Crudge!
April 24, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Cruz was all over that pitch.
April 24, 2007 at 7:47 pm
51: Darnit - I was going to post that! Sluz!!!
April 24, 2007 at 7:49 pm
53: You gotta go with the name that starts Cr. Jose’s been doing most of the damage.
April 24, 2007 at 7:49 pm
was to go Brian … we will take any little hit ….
where did Sludges ball go … I drifted off to sleep …. woke up when Teddy yelled

see I can’t even type …
that’s way to go Brian
April 24, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Johnson wanting balls eight inches off the plate called for strikes. I’m Rick James, *****!
Apologies to anyone offended by Rick James.
April 24, 2007 at 7:51 pm
hmmm…. Johnson pitches around El Hombre! …. chicken…
April 24, 2007 at 7:52 pm

Ground balls-fly balls - D Wells 5-4; Ra Johnson 3-3.
Batters faced - D Wells 16; Ra Johnson 18.
April 24, 2007 at 7:52 pm
they just showed Mark Grace getting hit but a 100mph fast ball by Johnson ….. ouch
April 24, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Johnson is certainly not that fearsome thus far. As I pointed out earlier, Johnson’s supplying all the power, so a nice swing can crush a ball.
April 24, 2007 at 7:53 pm
61: After having to listen to Mark Grace, I wish Johnson would do it again.
April 24, 2007 at 7:53 pm
C’mon Greeney! Time for career slam numero dos!
April 24, 2007 at 7:53 pm
58: LOL.
April 24, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Cameron is really getting beat up on the lower legs .. jammin the ankle … foul ball off the foot and not HBP
April 24, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Yes Greene
April 24, 2007 at 7:55 pm
I picked a good time to finish dinner! Great game for Greenie.
April 24, 2007 at 7:55 pm
those are miserable stats with bases loaded. … UNTIL NOW
April 24, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Khalil is crashing RJ’s party in a big way.
April 24, 2007 at 7:55 pm
I’ll take that. That’s my boy!
April 24, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Pile on. We need a big enough lead to hit a Dback. Or two.
April 24, 2007 at 7:56 pm
Greene 5 for 12 against the unit …
April 24, 2007 at 7:56 pm
Khalil has been extremely hot these past few games. Here’s hoping he can keep up a great pace all season.
I’m hoping Kouz gets a base hit.
April 24, 2007 at 7:57 pm
The DBax TV keeps showing the umpire. Like Johnson’s control has been so good and only the ump is causing any problems.
April 24, 2007 at 7:57 pm
AZ bullpen warming up
April 24, 2007 at 7:58 pm
great cut by Kouz…great time of snap out of slump….
April 24, 2007 at 7:58 pm
A better AB from Kouz.
April 24, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Better AB for Kouz. Popped out, but he took it full after being behind early.
April 24, 2007 at 7:58 pm
great are they gona walk by Man Bo again .. dar^%%@$
April 24, 2007 at 7:59 pm
KK with a ball to the outfield … I’m still seeing that as progress!
April 24, 2007 at 7:59 pm
oh well.
April 24, 2007 at 7:59 pm
oh well….
April 24, 2007 at 7:59 pm
75: Tom, we’ve been over this. It’s Randy Johnson hero worship tonite.
You should have heard the lavish praise heaped upon him after the he K’d NOG to start the game.
I would pee myself if Wells gets a knock here.
April 24, 2007 at 8:00 pm
You can hear the vertebrae groaning in Boomer’s back.
April 24, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Wells has to be upset with this “disrespect”… walking men to get to him? Come on Wellsy, make ‘em pay….
April 24, 2007 at 8:04 pm
84 … Boomer doesn’t need that kinda pressure …
April 24, 2007 at 8:04 pm
so is Randy out ???? 97 pitches
April 24, 2007 at 8:05 pm
88 … I gotta think so … wonder how much more we’ll go with Wells … he seems to be doing well … but those 3 ABs might have taken something outta him too …
April 24, 2007 at 8:06 pm
Looking forward to seeing that vaunted Arizona pen tonight
April 24, 2007 at 8:08 pm
89 : Wells only has 62 pitches … so I would think they would like him to go 7
April 24, 2007 at 8:08 pm
but I am hoping for at least 6
April 24, 2007 at 8:08 pm
Does anyone in MLB have as many wins as us with only 3 saves?
April 24, 2007 at 8:11 pm
93 … Mets only have 3 saves … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/st.....p;sort=806
April 24, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Well I’d say the Wells contract is looking bad, as a lot of people thought
April 24, 2007 at 8:12 pm
are playing at Coors field ….
April 24, 2007 at 8:13 pm
What the hell happened? This inning started off innocent enough.
April 24, 2007 at 8:13 pm
okay, enoughs enough… pull ‘em.
April 24, 2007 at 8:13 pm
How do we explain Dodger Stadium then?
April 24, 2007 at 8:14 pm
95 … I think David Wells is far from the biggest problem/concern with the Padres right now … he’s the #5 starter …
April 24, 2007 at 8:14 pm
… and we shoulda PH’d for him when we had an opportunity
April 24, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Oy, get him out of there.
His last outing was fantastic, its tough to see him getting touched up so bad.
April 24, 2007 at 8:15 pm
100: Agreed. He’s a helluva #5
April 24, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Heath Bell warming up in the forest
April 24, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Holy cow, back to back triples?
Sounds like something we will read too much about in the paper tomorrow
April 24, 2007 at 8:17 pm
So we’re ok paying 5M+ for a below average starter just because he’s our worst one?
How much worse would Mike Thompson have been?
April 24, 2007 at 8:17 pm
105: Let’s hope not. We have four innings of AZ bullpen coming up that we should be able to pound.
April 24, 2007 at 8:17 pm
way to go Marcus
April 24, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Nice play by NOG to end an ugly inning.
April 24, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Thank god for NOG. His D is far superior to Barfield’s.
April 24, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Thru 5 …
Pitches-strikes - D Wells 79-49; Ra Johnson 97-53.
Ground balls-fly balls - D Wells 6-6; Ra Johnson 3-5.
Batters faced - D Wells 23; Ra Johnson 27.
… and I vote that Wells is now done for the evening …
April 24, 2007 at 8:19 pm
111 : all in favor of the bull pen raise your hands
April 24, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Oh how I love other team’s bll pens .. YEAH NOG
April 24, 2007 at 8:21 pm
106 … what Mike Thompson are you talking about? This Mike Thompson … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7764 … that’s a 7.84 ERA there fella … OK, so Wells sits at 6.00 … I’m willing to (friendly) wager that Wells ends the season at under 6.00 …
April 24, 2007 at 8:21 pm
#112: Absolutely. If you’re going to carry seven guys in the bullpen, you might as well use them.
April 24, 2007 at 8:22 pm
115 : they are rested .. with the day off yesterday
April 24, 2007 at 8:22 pm
So then aren’t you also willing to wager Thompson would end at lower then 7.84?
April 24, 2007 at 8:24 pm
117 : I would not exchange Wells for Thompson … but I am thinking they will both lower their ERA’s … I still like Thompson better as long relief .. once he gets his form back
April 24, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Seriously though Thompson was kind of a joke, but somebody like Kip Wells or Randy Wolf would certainly been a big improvement.
None of these pitchers coming off an injury was interested in pitching at Petco, with this bullpen?
April 24, 2007 at 8:27 pm
A-Gon is swinging the bat very well tonight.
April 24, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Medders K’s/Walks 8/7
April 24, 2007 at 8:29 pm
I think that everyone is going to want to pitch for the Padres after this season. Boomer can still get a win after coughing up 5 runs in 5 innings. People will love that.
King Adrian is having a brilliant nite.
April 24, 2007 at 8:30 pm
96 … in 2006, the “park factor” at Chase was pretty near Coors … http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....eason=2006 … and it’s lookin’ that way tonight!
April 24, 2007 at 8:30 pm
Niiccee.
April 24, 2007 at 8:30 pm
And now the Snakes have forgotten how to play baseball.
April 24, 2007 at 8:30 pm
OMG KHALIL
April 24, 2007 at 8:31 pm
