I never saw the morning til I stayed up all night
I never saw the sunshine til you turned out the light
I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with baseball, but this is one of my favorite Tom Waits songs of all time and “San Diego” is in the title.

So there. Go Padres!

  1. Jay, relax, have a cream soda, do some f**ing thing.

    (Jimmy Cerrano)

  2. With our speed on the bases, a long single might clear them.

  3. That’s the second night in a row Tracy has boxed the double play grounder. They’re lucky to get even one out on that play.

  4. Livan can really move the ball left to right for a right hander. The first pitch to Russell was nasty.

  5. Branyan just got under that one.

  6. Can someone explan to me how this washed up junkballer can keep getting us out time and time again? He reminds me of the guy in Major League with the jalepeno up his nose.

  7. yep..just missed making it 3-2… Clay just needs to keep hanging 0′s the rest of the way…

  8. #56 you mean Eddie Harris? He was topping out at 35 on the radar gun..

  9. Yep, that’s him. He may have had a few mph on Livan

  10. Go, Gi– sorry, I can’t say it. Go, team that is playing the Dodgers.

  11. Anybody know how many pitches Livan has “thrown”? Not that the guy can’t throw 150 with that rubber arm.

  12. Still at 74, so plenty left. Getting his pitch count up won’t help much at this point i think. just gotta go after it.

  13. Two pitches, two outs. Good start to the sixth.

  14. am I the only one who’s sick of Tom Petty????

  15. 82 pitches for LH, 79 for Clay. Branyan did just miss that one.

  16. Two-out rally. C’mon, Ryno.

  17. Eric, what’s up with Petty?

  18. Attaboy, Klesko! Let’s get to this guy.

  19. Klesko drives in the 1st Padre run. Is that cheering I hear out there?

  20. Nice move by Bochy.

Love to see a drag bunt by Doc here.

  21. Geoff, the “commercial break” in my mlb.tv broadcast always ends in this little Tom Petty bit. No matter how cool a guy is or how good his music is, when you hear the same 10-second clip 18 times per game, it gets real old.

  22. Roberts swings at ball 4. Oh well.

Gotcha, Eric. That would be pretty irritating.

  23. re: Klesko, it’s an extremely small sample, but he hasn’t had a poor at bat yet.

  24. I can vouch for Eric. The clip is, in fact, of Tom Petty, over and over.

  25. Wow, that’s a fine tag by Branyan. Gutsy play by Adkins.

  26. Sigh. Not that it mattered…

  27. boy these AZ kids can hit

  28. Adkins didn’t fool anyone that inning. Nice catch by Roberts.

  29. The OPS allowed by Atkins fastballs over the last 3 or 4 outings has to be over 2.000. His offspeed is OK, but they are drilling his fastballs.

  30. I don’t think I’ve ever been impressed by Adkins all year. He has decent number and decent-looking stretches, which I think owe much to the defense behind him.

  31. How is that a strike to Barfield (first pitch?)

  32. His pitches don’t appear to have much movement. Meantime, the offense seems to have blown its wad last night.

  33. It is only through 5 in SF. I have no faith in the Giants, at all. Have to hold them, and then we have 3 outs to work some magic.

  34. it really feels weird to say but go giants.

  35. How come I feel like Bochy? If you are not Meredith, Linebrink, Hoffman or Embree, I cringe when I see you on the mound? Sweeney was last night. What about Cassidy?

  36. AZ’s young hitters look very promising. Do they have any pitching on the way?

  37. Through 6 in SF. Lowry is pitching very well and Durham just hit a leadoff 2B.

  38. Feliz Ks for the 3rd time with a man on 3rd, 1 out. Aargh.

  39. Eric, they are so loaded with young hitters it’s not even funny. In addition to the kids we’ve seen this year, they’ve got Carlos Gonzalez and Justin Upton on the way. Fortunately they don’t have a lot of top notch pitching prospects. Dustin Nippert was highly regarded but didn’t have a real strong season.

    But, man, those hitters…

  40. rally caps everyone….everyone get your rally cap on….

  41. Wow, that may be the worst ad I’ve ever seen on TV.

  42. Bloop and a blast, please. Or two bloops and a blast. Two blasts. Whatever.

  43. re 91 – Yeah, but they don’t have Matt Bush!

Let’s get a man on here.

  44. 3-2 SF…Drew with a 2 run HR..

  45. 2-run bomb for Drew. Ouch.

  46. Two-run homer J.D. Drew makes it 3-2 up in SF.

  47. Geoff…I am sitting here, trying to catch up after a long day away…I turn on the TV to catch the rest of the game (been listening to it in the car) and 1 min later this commercial comes on…What the heck was that?

No might be about it…that is the WORST thing I have ever seen on TV…that is worse that the boot world commercials…even worse that the Corky’s Pest Control stuff…

Wow…I almost don’t wan the pads to win when a commercial like that airs…bad luck.
