I never saw the morning til I stayed up all night
I never saw the sunshine til you turned out the light
I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with baseball, but this is one of my favorite Tom Waits songs of all time and “San Diego” is in the title.

So there. Go Padres!

  1. Nice work Geoff….less than an hour till first pitch…

  2. Phillies are up 13-1 in the fifth. So much for fatigue…

  3. From the 70s flashback from a couple of weeks ago, Chicago:

After what you’ve meant to me
    Ooh baby now
    I can make it easily
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
I know that we both agree
The best thing to happen to you
Is the best thing that happened to me
    Yeah, yeah, yeah

    Feelin’ stronger every day
    Feelin’ stronger every day
    Feelin’ stronger every day
    (you know I’m alright now

  4. The Phitin’ Phils . . . It’d be nuts if they made it in. Of course assuming that the Pads would make it in.

  5. Ok . .. hope you guys know that I’m taking those Chicago lyrics completely out of context . . .

  6. No worries, Nick. You picked a good song — before they started churning out those cheesy ballads.

  7. Ok..so St. Louis is winning 3-1 in the 5th… Houston is losing 4-1 in the 8th.. Philly is winning 154-1 against Florida…

Anyone smarter than me want to explain what all that means…

  8. And no Padres on extra innings tonight…

  9. In fact…last night was the last game those of us from out of town get to see on television until the postseason..

  10. quick – go get mlb.tv!

  11. Already did..about a week ago when this crap happened…

  12. I actually prefer it to Extra Innings – cheaper and can multi-task with the TV on another game or show or whatever

  13. true enough…

  14. What does the whole season on mlbtv cost vs. extra innings? I don’t remember what I paid at the beginning of the season for extra innings and I just bought mlb last week for $20

  15. That was ugly. Hernandez had Roberts picked off. Conor Jackson dropped the ball twice and Roberts is safe. Thank you very much.

  16. I think it was $79.99 or something like that. I got it at the beginning

  17. Gee, I thought Mike might beat that out

  18. Houston finally lost a game…

  19. ground ball to short…that’s our Clay!

  20. Ok..one last question regarding mlbtv…is there a way to choose which broadcast you get…I’d rather not listen to the Arizona announcers if i have a choice…

  21. no, it seems to only be one option each game

  22. Filthy pitch by Hensley to strike out Gonzalez, who received a standing ovation before the at-bat. Matt and Tony were noting how many Padres fans they’ve seen out at the ballpark today.

  23. You can’t choose broadcast teams. I paid $15 a month for MLBtv, because if the Padres weren’t out of it at midseason, I would have canceled.

  24. to clarify, they only have one TV feed. They have home and away radio though, but I don’t know if you can make both play at the same time (or keep them in sync)

  25. Padres game notes from AP –

Manager Bruce Bochy said SS Khalil Greene has a “50-50″ chance of being on the Padres’ postseason roster. Greene has been bothered by a sprained ligament in his left middle finger and has not batted since Aug. 17. … LHP David Wells will start at Arizona on Saturday afternoon. In his last start, he gave up four runs and 11 hits in 6 1-3 innings against Arizona on Sept. 20. … RHP Chan Ho Park faced three batters Thursday night in his first appearance since undergoing surgery to stop intestinal bleeding. Entering the game with San Diego leading Arizona 12-2, Park walked a batter and gave up back-to-back doubles before Bochy lifted him. “I’m a little disappointed, but that’s all I could do,” Park said. “It’s not going to be easy.”

  26. Dammit, Livan’s got the nasty stuff working tonight. And he calls his child Jesus, which is odd. Says he likes the name though.

    OK, I’ll stop.

  27. kinda cool – espn.com has the padres ranked fourth in their power rankings

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/powerranking

we’re behind NYY, OAK, MIN. Not too shabby! Stros are 6th, Mets 7th

  28. about time they gave us a bit of respect..only took 158 games…

  29. #27: LOL, Clayton. Could Friday night be all right for fighting?

  30. As long as the sun doesn’t go down on our playoff hopes

  31. Hensley is up this inning. This looks to be a very tough game. Unless Clay gets his “down” stuff working and in better control, there will be walks and hard hit balls.

Livan, thank you, looks, once again, soft and nasty. I keep hoping for easy. I know, greedy, but just hoped a bit of last night would keep rolling.

What’s the over/under on the top of first for LA? 4?

  32. That was a hanging curve, swung through. Making me nervous.

  33. Hensley worked a nice sequence to Drew. His pitches seem to have pretty good movement tonight — that last pitch to Quentin really got in on his hands.

  34. #28: Very cool. Unusual to see such props from the likes of ESPN.

  35. Watching Clay hit is almost as funny as watching Aki.

  36. Nice drive by Giles. Getting the good Livan. I hate that. We should where Dodger Uni’s when playing the West. Actually, DBacks are the only team to have come close to splitting with LA.

  37. Gonzo is the 1B equivalent of Brooks Robinson

  38. Respect doesn’t mean anything. I would rather have the wins.

  39. The Pads look loose. I think that is good. A Gon laughing and joking; same with Blum. I am watching this and am in knots. That’s why some play, some watch.

  40. When I say “I think” as in I think but not sure. Loose hopefully means they can focus.

  41. Yep, that pitch was loose alright

  42. Sweet catch by Piazza to end the inning.

  43. that was actually not a bad pitch I think…looked down but Byrnes went down to get it

  44. Look, Clay’s pitching has not been very Clay. Up in the zone, few grounders. The pitch to Byrnes did not look that high, but it must of hung. Clay does not look loose. He looks nervous. Now maybe more so.

  45. Clay looks okay from where I’m sitting; he just made a bad pitch. Time to get him some runs.

  46. geez, everything we’re hitting is hanging up there forever

  47. solid single from Piazza…..good thing this guy can’t play anymore like most thought before the season…

  48. I guess I am uptight. Clay is OK, but quite the Clay of a sub-3 ERA in the second half. That was a sweet play by Piazza, followed by a nice single. Go guys.
