I never saw the morning til I stayed up all night
I never saw the sunshine til you turned out the light
I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song.
It has nothing whatsoever to do with baseball, but this is one of my favorite Tom Waits songs of all time and “San Diego” is in the title.
So there. Go Padres!
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

Nice work Geoff….less than an hour till first pitch…
September 29, 2006 at 6:06 pm
Phillies are up 13-1 in the fifth. So much for fatigue…
September 29, 2006 at 6:09 pm
From the 70s flashback from a couple of weeks ago, Chicago:
After what you’ve meant to me
Ooh baby now
I can make it easily
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I know that we both agree
The best thing to happen to you
Is the best thing that happened to me
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Feelin’ stronger every day
Feelin’ stronger every day
Feelin’ stronger every day
(you know I’m alright now
September 29, 2006 at 6:10 pm
The Phitin’ Phils . . . It’d be nuts if they made it in. Of course assuming that the Pads would make it in.
September 29, 2006 at 6:12 pm
Ok . .. hope you guys know that I’m taking those Chicago lyrics completely out of context . . .
September 29, 2006 at 6:15 pm
No worries, Nick. You picked a good song — before they started churning out those cheesy ballads.
September 29, 2006 at 6:27 pm
Ok..so St. Louis is winning 3-1 in the 5th… Houston is losing 4-1 in the 8th.. Philly is winning 154-1 against Florida…
Anyone smarter than me want to explain what all that means…
September 29, 2006 at 6:29 pm
And no Padres on extra innings tonight…
September 29, 2006 at 6:32 pm
In fact…last night was the last game those of us from out of town get to see on television until the postseason..
September 29, 2006 at 6:34 pm
quick - go get mlb.tv!
September 29, 2006 at 6:35 pm
Already did..about a week ago when this **** happened…
September 29, 2006 at 6:37 pm
I actually prefer it to Extra Innings - cheaper and can multi-task with the TV on another game or show or whatever
September 29, 2006 at 6:38 pm
true enough…
September 29, 2006 at 6:44 pm
Shoot, nice play by Drew.
September 29, 2006 at 6:46 pm
What does the whole season on mlbtv cost vs. extra innings? I don’t remember what I paid at the beginning of the season for extra innings and I just bought mlb last week for $20
September 29, 2006 at 6:46 pm
That was ugly. Hernandez had Roberts picked off. Conor Jackson dropped the ball twice and Roberts is safe. Thank you very much.
September 29, 2006 at 6:48 pm
I think it was $79.99 or something like that. I got it at the beginning
September 29, 2006 at 6:49 pm
Gee, I thought Mike might beat that out
September 29, 2006 at 6:51 pm
Houston finally lost a game…
September 29, 2006 at 6:52 pm
ground ball to short…that’s our Clay!
September 29, 2006 at 6:52 pm
Ok..one last question regarding mlbtv…is there a way to choose which broadcast you get…I’d rather not listen to the Arizona announcers if i have a choice…
September 29, 2006 at 6:53 pm
no, it seems to only be one option each game
September 29, 2006 at 6:56 pm
Filthy pitch by Hensley to strike out Gonzalez, who received a standing ovation before the at-bat. Matt and Tony were noting how many Padres fans they’ve seen out at the ballpark today.
September 29, 2006 at 6:57 pm
You can’t choose broadcast teams. I paid $15 a month for MLBtv, because if the Padres weren’t out of it at midseason, I would have canceled.
September 29, 2006 at 6:58 pm
to clarify, they only have one TV feed. They have home and away radio though, but I don’t know if you can make both play at the same time (or keep them in sync)
September 29, 2006 at 6:59 pm
Padres game notes from AP –
Manager Bruce Bochy said SS Khalil Greene has a “50-50″ chance of being on the Padres’ postseason roster. Greene has been bothered by a sprained ligament in his left middle finger and has not batted since Aug. 17. … LHP David Wells will start at Arizona on Saturday afternoon. In his last start, he gave up four runs and 11 hits in 6 1-3 innings against Arizona on Sept. 20. … RHP Chan Ho Park faced three batters Thursday night in his first appearance since undergoing surgery to stop intestinal bleeding. Entering the game with San Diego leading Arizona 12-2, Park walked a batter and gave up back-to-back doubles before Bochy lifted him. “I’m a little disappointed, but that’s all I could do,” Park said. “It’s not going to be easy.”
September 29, 2006 at 7:03 pm
Dammit, Livan’s got the nasty stuff working tonight. And he calls his child Jesus, which is odd. Says he likes the name though.
OK, I’ll stop.
September 29, 2006 at 7:09 pm
kinda cool - espn.com has the padres ranked fourth in their power rankings
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/powerranking
we’re behind NYY, OAK, MIN. Not too shabby! Stros are 6th, Mets 7th
September 29, 2006 at 7:10 pm
about time they gave us a bit of respect..only took 158 games…
September 29, 2006 at 7:11 pm
#27: LOL, Clayton. Could Friday night be all right for fighting?
September 29, 2006 at 7:14 pm
As long as the sun doesn’t go down on our playoff hopes
September 29, 2006 at 7:14 pm
Hensley is up this inning. This looks to be a very tough game. Unless Clay gets his “down” stuff working and in better control, there will be walks and hard hit balls.
Livan, thank you, looks, once again, soft and nasty. I keep hoping for easy. I know, greedy, but just hoped a bit of last night would keep rolling.
What’s the over/under on the top of first for LA? 4?
September 29, 2006 at 7:15 pm
That was a hanging curve, swung through. Making me nervous.
September 29, 2006 at 7:16 pm
Hensley worked a nice sequence to Drew. His pitches seem to have pretty good movement tonight — that last pitch to Quentin really got in on his hands.
September 29, 2006 at 7:18 pm
#28: Very cool. Unusual to see such props from the likes of ESPN.
September 29, 2006 at 7:19 pm
Watching Clay hit is almost as funny as watching Aki.
September 29, 2006 at 7:21 pm
Nice drive by Giles. Getting the good Livan. I hate that. We should where Dodger Uni’s when playing the West. Actually, DBacks are the only team to have come close to splitting with LA.
September 29, 2006 at 7:23 pm
Gonzo is the 1B equivalent of Brooks Robinson
September 29, 2006 at 7:25 pm
Respect doesn’t mean anything. I would rather have the wins.
September 29, 2006 at 7:26 pm
The Pads look loose. I think that is good. A Gon laughing and joking; same with Blum. I am watching this and am in knots. That’s why some play, some watch.
September 29, 2006 at 7:27 pm
When I say “I think” as in I think but not sure. Loose hopefully means they can focus.
September 29, 2006 at 7:29 pm
Yuck.
September 29, 2006 at 7:29 pm
Yep, that pitch was loose alright
September 29, 2006 at 7:31 pm
Sweet catch by Piazza to end the inning.
September 29, 2006 at 7:32 pm
that was actually not a bad pitch I think…looked down but Byrnes went down to get it
September 29, 2006 at 7:32 pm
Look, Clay’s pitching has not been very Clay. Up in the zone, few grounders. The pitch to Byrnes did not look that high, but it must of hung. Clay does not look loose. He looks nervous. Now maybe more so.
September 29, 2006 at 7:34 pm
Clay looks okay from where I’m sitting; he just made a bad pitch. Time to get him some runs.
September 29, 2006 at 7:35 pm
geez, everything we’re hitting is hanging up there forever
September 29, 2006 at 7:36 pm
solid single from Piazza…..good thing this guy can’t play anymore like most thought before the season…
September 29, 2006 at 7:37 pm
I guess I am uptight. Clay is OK, but quite the Clay of a sub-3 ERA in the second half. That was a sweet play by Piazza, followed by a nice single. Go guys.
September 29, 2006 at 7:38 pm
Jay, relax, have a cream soda, do some f**ing thing.
(Jimmy Cerrano)
September 29, 2006 at 7:39 pm
With our speed on the bases, a long single might clear them.
September 29, 2006 at 7:39 pm
That’s the second night in a row Tracy has boxed the double play grounder. They’re lucky to get even one out on that play.
September 29, 2006 at 7:41 pm
Livan can really move the ball left to right for a right hander. The first pitch to Russell was nasty.
September 29, 2006 at 7:41 pm
Branyan just got under that one.
September 29, 2006 at 7:42 pm
Can someone explan to me how this washed up junkballer can keep getting us out time and time again? He reminds me of the guy in Major League with the jalepeno up his nose.
September 29, 2006 at 7:43 pm
yep..just missed making it 3-2… Clay just needs to keep hanging 0’s the rest of the way…
September 29, 2006 at 7:44 pm
#56 you mean Eddie Harris? He was topping out at 35 on the radar gun..
September 29, 2006 at 7:45 pm
Yep, that’s him. He may have had a few mph on Livan
September 29, 2006 at 7:47 pm
1-0 Giants..
September 29, 2006 at 7:48 pm
Go, Gi– sorry, I can’t say it. Go, team that is playing the Dodgers.
September 29, 2006 at 7:55 pm
Anybody know how many pitches Livan has “thrown”? Not that the guy can’t throw 150 with that rubber arm.
September 29, 2006 at 7:59 pm
Still at 74, so plenty left. Getting his pitch count up won’t help much at this point i think. just gotta go after it.
September 29, 2006 at 8:09 pm
Two pitches, two outs. Good start to the sixth.
September 29, 2006 at 8:15 pm
am I the only one who’s sick of Tom Petty????
September 29, 2006 at 8:16 pm
82 pitches for LH, 79 for Clay. Branyan did just miss that one.
September 29, 2006 at 8:20 pm
Two-out rally. C’mon, Ryno.
September 29, 2006 at 8:22 pm
Eric, what’s up with Petty?
September 29, 2006 at 8:24 pm
Attaboy, Klesko! Let’s get to this guy.
September 29, 2006 at 8:25 pm
Klesko drives in the 1st Padre run. Is that cheering I hear out there?
September 29, 2006 at 8:26 pm
Nice move by Bochy.
Love to see a drag bunt by Doc here.
September 29, 2006 at 8:26 pm
Geoff, the “commercial break” in my mlb.tv broadcast always ends in this little Tom Petty bit. No matter how cool a guy is or how good his music is, when you hear the same 10-second clip 18 times per game, it gets real old.
September 29, 2006 at 8:28 pm
Roberts swings at ball 4. Oh well.
Gotcha, Eric. That would be pretty irritating.
September 29, 2006 at 8:28 pm
re: Klesko, it’s an extremely small sample, but he hasn’t had a poor at bat yet.
September 29, 2006 at 8:28 pm
I can vouch for Eric. The clip is, in fact, of Tom Petty, over and over.
September 29, 2006 at 8:32 pm
Wow, that’s a fine tag by Branyan. Gutsy play by Adkins.
September 29, 2006 at 8:32 pm
Sigh. Not that it mattered…
September 29, 2006 at 8:33 pm
boy these AZ kids can hit
September 29, 2006 at 8:36 pm
Adkins didn’t fool anyone that inning. Nice catch by Roberts.
September 29, 2006 at 8:38 pm
The OPS allowed by Atkins fastballs over the last 3 or 4 outings has to be over 2.000. His offspeed is OK, but they are drilling his fastballs.
September 29, 2006 at 8:39 pm
2-0 Giants!
September 29, 2006 at 8:40 pm
I don’t think I’ve ever been impressed by Adkins all year. He has decent number and decent-looking stretches, which I think owe much to the defense behind him.
September 29, 2006 at 8:43 pm
3-0 Giants!
September 29, 2006 at 8:44 pm
How is that a strike to Barfield (first pitch?)
September 29, 2006 at 8:44 pm
His pitches don’t appear to have much movement. Meantime, the offense seems to have blown its wad last night.
September 29, 2006 at 8:47 pm
It is only through 5 in SF. I have no faith in the Giants, at all. Have to hold them, and then we have 3 outs to work some magic.
September 29, 2006 at 8:48 pm
it really feels weird to say but go giants.
September 29, 2006 at 8:52 pm
How come I feel like Bochy? If you are not Meredith, Linebrink, Hoffman or Embree, I cringe when I see you on the mound? Sweeney was last night. What about Cassidy?
September 29, 2006 at 8:56 pm
AZ’s young hitters look very promising. Do they have any pitching on the way?
September 29, 2006 at 8:57 pm
Through 6 in SF. Lowry is pitching very well and Durham just hit a leadoff 2B.
September 29, 2006 at 9:01 pm
Feliz Ks for the 3rd time with a man on 3rd, 1 out. Aargh.
September 29, 2006 at 9:01 pm
Eric, they are so loaded with young hitters it’s not even funny. In addition to the kids we’ve seen this year, they’ve got Carlos Gonzalez and Justin Upton on the way. Fortunately they don’t have a lot of top notch pitching prospects. Dustin Nippert was highly regarded but didn’t have a real strong season.
But, man, those hitters…
September 29, 2006 at 9:03 pm
rally caps everyone….everyone get your rally cap on….
September 29, 2006 at 9:03 pm
Wow, that may be the worst ad I’ve ever seen on TV.
September 29, 2006 at 9:05 pm
Bloop and a blast, please. Or two bloops and a blast. Two blasts. Whatever.
September 29, 2006 at 9:05 pm
re 91 - Yeah, but they don’t have Matt Bush!
Let’s get a man on here.
September 29, 2006 at 9:08 pm
3-2 SF…Drew with a 2 run HR..
September 29, 2006 at 9:08 pm
2-run bomb for Drew. Ouch.
September 29, 2006 at 9:09 pm
Two-run homer J.D. Drew makes it 3-2 up in SF.
September 29, 2006 at 9:09 pm
Geoff…I am sitting here, trying to catch up after a long day away…I turn on the TV to catch the rest of the game (been listening to it in the car) and 1 min later this commercial comes on…What the heck was that?
No might be about it…that is the WORST thing I have ever seen on TV…that is worse that the boot world commercials…even worse that the Corky’s Pest Control stuff…
Wow…I almost don’t wan the pads to win when a commercial like that airs…bad luck.
September 29, 2006 at 9:10 pm
Ok..when the game is over…you SD people are going to have to explain the commercial..
September 29, 2006 at 9:11 pm
Who’s the Giants closer this week?
September 29, 2006 at 9:11 pm
Mark…I can’t explain it…it is too painful!!
We deserve to lose after commercials like that!
September 29, 2006 at 9:12 pm
well..i never thought I’d say this…but I think i might be glad i don’t live in San Diego..
September 29, 2006 at 9:13 pm
It’s a bunch of pregnant women singing and dancing around a crib. Something you might see in an early Lynch film. Kind of like tonight’s game, come to think of it.
September 29, 2006 at 9:14 pm
Mark…it was bad. My eyes hurt!
Well, we lost…Like Fat Tony said, the Pads can’t ever do anything the easy way.
September 29, 2006 at 9:14 pm
yipes…that was painful to read…can’t imagine how bad it looked.. give me the Tom Petty video 389 times a game..
September 29, 2006 at 9:18 pm
Ok, Giants bullpen, just give me 6 more outs…
September 29, 2006 at 9:18 pm
I assume the Giants will find a way to blow this one, so I’m off to watch the season premiere of Doctor Who. Better luck tomorrow night.
September 29, 2006 at 9:21 pm
Phil Niekro just struck out pinch hitting for the Gnats…
September 29, 2006 at 9:24 pm
Despite the loss, I’m getting the battle station prepared for Operation:Postseason Tickets at 9 AM tomorrow. I’m hoping 2 phones and 2 computers will be enough…anyone else trying tomorrow?
September 29, 2006 at 9:26 pm
good luck in the morning….if i decide to go…i’ll pay someone who is sellling once the schedule comes out. It was easier to go to the playoffs in ‘98 when I didn’t have kids…
September 29, 2006 at 9:28 pm
Ugh, Cal Poly love and all, but…Kevin Corriea is the best option? I guess when you have the Giants bullpen it is…
September 29, 2006 at 9:32 pm
Hey..he got through the inning… 3-2..bottom of 8
September 29, 2006 at 9:32 pm
Hmm…that was actually a pretty sick inning. Way to represent, Corriea!
September 29, 2006 at 9:55 pm
Keeping with the theory that we can’t do anything easy…LA has 1st and 2nd with 1 out in the top of the 9th…
September 29, 2006 at 9:56 pm
the friggin Giants need a closer
September 29, 2006 at 10:01 pm
wow, mike stanton…thanks for nothin
September 29, 2006 at 10:02 pm
WP…Dodgers lead 4-2.
September 29, 2006 at 10:02 pm
errrrr….4-3
