In-Game Discussion: Padres @ Twins (18 Jun 2005)

first pitch: 4:10 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Brian Lawrence (3-6, 4.76 ERA) vs Brad Radke (5-5, 4.13 ERA)

Friars try to avoid getting their arses handed to them yet again by some team from the midwest. The rest is details. I’ll be eating airplane food tomorrow, so it’s probably best that I won’t be able to watch the game. Mmmm, plastic biscuit.

  1. Speaking of Phil Nevin failing to age well, I really hope Towers doesn’t re-sign Ramon Hernandez for more than two years and/or $12 million.

  2. Twins just got their second hit of the night. Lawrence is tough to hit when he is on…

  3. Uh-oh. Just got their third hit of the night and second of the inning.

  4. On the pitch that Hunter hit, Lawrence matched Radke’s pitch total for the night.

  5. Lawrence had a double play ball, but it got to him so fast, Greene wasn’t to second base yet.

  6. You know my opinion on Ramon.
I’d let lawrence keep going for awile, even if they’re hitting the ball hard. He’ll get the ball in play, and sooner or later they’ll hit it at somebody. He should be able to finish this thing, considering the 4 run lead.

  7. This should be B-Law’s last inning. Hopefully he can get out of it.

  8. How many times has Lawrence plunked two batters in one game?

  9. Last inning, my ass. He can finish. We work our bullpen WAY more than necessary.

  10. Leitner’s raving about B-Law’s slider. How’s it looking?

  11. He’s thrown 96 pitches to this point. He might have one more in him.

    7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 0 HR (13.7 pitches per inning, 74% strikes)

  12. Lawrence has a lot of movement on his pitches tonight. It’s been fun to watch. Double for Greene.

  13. Here’s an instance where a sac bunt increases your odds of scoring one run, but decreases your odds of scoring more than one.

  14. I’d like to see another run. No team has come back at home from a 5 run deficit in the 8th.

  15. No team this year, obviously.

  16. Robert Fick is up. He’s 2 for 4 with a triple.

  17. Richard I saw this at the game thread at Batgirl, and thought you’d appreciate it:

“Honestly, do the Padres really think Bradke hit Nevin on purpose? I mean, I would’ve if given the chance, because I hate his guts. But not Bradke!”

  18. Robert Fick is the best hitter in the whole entire world!

  19. The Padres would have to do something that no other team in baseball has done this year to lose this game. I hope they don’t.

  20. oh that fick, en fuego!!!

  21. I think Lawrence can hold ‘em off now. 7-1 Pads!!!
See what happens when I finaly show up?

  22. Robert Fick has been ridiculous this year. I figured regular playing time would reduce his huge batting average. Instead, he’s batting .372.

  23. C’mon, Nevin. Don’t kill the rally. You’re due!

  24. finalLy…ooops

  25. So much for being due…

  26. At least he didn’t strike out, Richard.

  27. A Nady sighting! Does he still play for us?!?

  28. No team has come back from a deficit this size (home or away) this late in the game.

  29. Why would anyone hate Nevin? That I don’t understand. Few guys try as hard as he does.

  30. a single, two nubbers and a k in rbi situtations. Nevin is trying to tick me off today…

  31. Bochy likes to let Nady play a little and then sit him until his timing is off, then insert him in games that don’t matter.

  32. Hank, they call it regression toward the mean.

  33. I am really starting to wonder what has Nady done to tick off Bochy? It sure seems like he is in the doghouse. Anyone else get that feeling?

  34. That DOES seem to be Bochy’s plan with Nady.
I still say that if they’re not going to use him, they should trade him for something they WILL use.

  35. It does seem that way. All he’s done is be in the team’s top five in EqA all year.

  36. It’s strange. Especially because the organization has always been high on Nady promoting him over more productive players in the minors and such. Now that he’s shown the ability to play in the majors, he’s riding the bench.

  37. Was it really worth making Lawrence throw those extra pitches to get one out in the seventh? I understand the reasoning behind sending him back out, but still.

  38. talk about bochy pushing the right buttons, dj in left was just in time..whats with roberts dropping the ball?

  39. He ALWAYS removes Klesko for defensive reasons late in the game. More often than it pays off (like tonight), it bites him in the ass. More often than either of those, it doesn’t matter at all, though.

  40. I always hate it when he takes Ryno out too early in a too close ballgame..

  41. The main benefit of removing Klesko with a six-run lead is that he isn’t likely to suffer an injury on the bench.
Unless there’s a concern with injuring Lawrence, I’d still have him out there.

  42. sox come back to beat the dodgers, yea!!!

  43. Sox beat the Dodgers?!?!
Leitner was talking like the Dodgers had it put away.

  44. There’s a concern with injuring any pitcher.

  45. The Dodgers were winning by 2 in the ninth.

  46. Chicago scored four in the ninth to win, I guess.

  47. Rowand had a 2 RBI single and then came home on a Pierzynski home run to win it in the bottom of the ninth.

  48. Richard, why would you care about injuring Lawrence, when you’ve got Germano waiting in the wings???? :-)

  49. Pierzynski was an excellent signing by the ChiSox. The only better signing of the off-season by any team was Pedro to the Mets.
