Padres @ Cardinals 5:15 p.m. PT Channel 4SD, DIRECTV 726 AM 1090, FM 105.7, XM 184 MLB, B-R Welcome to the second half. Here's what the Padres need to do the rest of the way to reach certain benchmarks: 28-39 to finish at .400 31-36 to finish at .420 (worst record in NL last year) 36-31 to finish at .450 44-23 to finish at .500 52-15 to finish at .550 (repeat of '07) If they win each of their remaining 67 games, the Padres will finish at 104-58, a game back of the '04 Cardinals. Are we having fun yet?

Reshaping the Padres: Let’s Make a Deal (or Three)

On Thursday, we examined what the Padres have and what they need. Now we turn to the question of which teams might make good trade partners and then consider some possible scenarios. As of this writing, about half the teams in baseball appear to be in contention. Some will fall of the pace, although it's impossible to know which ones. Others may not be interested in adding payroll despite their hot starts -- Oakland, Florida, and Minnesota come to mind. The NL West teams are probably out as well -- Kevin Towers has made a total of four trades (one with each team) within the division in 12 1/2 years. That's out of 139 total trades, at last count. Almost everyone needs pitching to some degree. ...

Shadow Puppets

For those of you who might have "missed" Monday night's game, here is a quick recap: The Cardinals scored their first runs of the game on a fly ball to deep left that Scott Hairston dropped into the stands for a two-run homer. They scored their next run on a bases-loaded HBP to Yadier Molina -- yes, that Yadier Molina. They scored their next run on a homer by Cesar Izturis -- yes, that Cesar Izturis. Then Albert Pujols homered, which is fine because, well, he's Albert Pujols and that's what he does. Then Todd Wellemeyer drove in a run -- yes, that Todd -- wait, who the heck is Todd Wellemeyer? The game ended. I see the white flag. I'm not prepared to acknowledge it just yet, but ...

Falling Off the Bandwagon

We are all products of our environment. The recent environment in San Diego baseball has been one of winning. Since moving downtown for the 2004 season, the Padres have seen unprecedented on-field success. For the first time in franchise history they've enjoyed four straight winning seasons. In 2005 and 2006, they reached the post-season in back-to-back seasons, another first. And as fans in these parts are all too aware, they came within a strike of making it three straight. Through Monday, the Padres have won 360 games since 2004. That's more wins than all but three teams in the National League (Cardinals, 389; Phillies, 369; Braves, 368) over the same period. Only the Padres and Phillies have posted winning records in each of the past four ...

Padres Acquire Edmonds

Saturday, December 15, 2007
by Geoff Young
The Padres are about to pick up center fielder Jim Edmonds from St. Louis for minor-league third baseman David Freese. Reportedly, the Cardinals also will be sending $1 million, which is why the deal hasn't been formally announced yet. Edmonds is in decline, and the Pads will need a contingency plan, but I like this move. They're essentially signing him to a 1-year, $7 million deal. Like the acquisitions of Randy Wolf and Tadahito Iguchi (and the re-signing of Greg Maddux), it's a relatively low-risk move. The last time San Diego brought in a guy that everyone else had written off, it worked out pretty ...
