Welcome to the second half. Here’s what the Padres need to do the rest of the way to reach certain benchmarks:

  • 28-39 to finish at .400
  • 31-36 to finish at .420 (worst record in NL last year)
  • 36-31 to finish at .450
  • 44-23 to finish at .500
  • 52-15 to finish at .550 (repeat of ‘07)

If they win each of their remaining 67 games, the Padres will finish at 104-58, a game back of the ‘04 Cardinals.

Are we having fun yet?

I’d just like to see some positive signs in the seond half, namely KG swinging the bat better, Hairy continuing his tear, and Chase continuing to refine his game.

I’m also looking forward to seeing one or more of the following three: Veneable, LeBlanc, and Inman.

Swore off baseball and the Padres after paying good money to watch crappy padre baseball at Petco last Sunday with my bored son.

But here I am back again. Luckily Petco is an interesting place to stroll around because God knows the action on the field is terrible.

Any idea about who might occupy that older building behind the right field stands? Be a cool restaurant but being only accessible to fans during a game obviously would not work.

How bout a Padre museum. Certainly no one on the current team save Peavy, would be allowed in.

#4@PM: I took the Petco Park tour earlier this year (and met Tony the Gwynn and got his autograph and a picture which totally kicked ass) and they said that they’re currently searching for tenants for the Candle Factory building. They did mention a hope for a restaurant or two.

I know for a fact that there were several attempt to put a small museum devoted to the Padres (including the PCL Padres) and baseball in San Diego, but they were met with no support from the team. A stupid thing considering the Ballpark in Arlington has rotating collections from the Baseball Hall of Fame in their park!

All right! All we need are 67 one game winning streaks that happen to occur in the next 67 games!

Ok, maybe not. I agree with Phantom that it would be great if Greene and Hairston hit, and I would add Gerut and/or Venable and one of the catchers to that list as well. In the rotation, it would be nice if Banks could sustain his success to this point, ideally with an improved strikeout rate. If Baek could hold on to most of the improvement in his strikeout rate he has seen with the move to the NL (he’s got 32 K’s in 42 NL innings against only 9 BB’s), he could be a nice rotation option for next year as well.

Jim Callis answered a couple of Padre-related questions in his last chat. Summarized:

    1. Believes Antonelli will bounce back.
    2. Thinks Dykstra will sign at a slight discount.

#10@Ben B.: Baek has an ERA+ of 75 as a Padre and a career mark of 85. He’s another Germano, a guy you try to stash in AAA. He should not be a starting pitcher on a team that hopes to contend. Banks’ K rate is way down from his minor league numbers, but I have a lot more hope for him than Baek.

The Arizona Republic reports that the Padres are close to trading Tony Clark to the Diamondbacks.

Clark is reportedly going to waive a 500K assignment bonus. Yikes.

We’re rumored to be receiving a AA pitching prospect. Cesar Valdez may be their top pitching prospect in Mobile, but that would be somewhat surprising for Clark. Brooks Brown is another interesting guy, but another one who may be off-limits in return for 3 months of a pinch-hitter.

  14. Ben B. Says:

#11@Tom Waits: I would say that Baek has pitched better than Banks as a Padre. Baek’s got a higher strikeout rate, about the same walk rate, and fewer homers allowed. I couldn’t really tell you which one has better stuff, but both throw harder than Germano at least. Coming into the year, Baek was definitely more highly regarded, but I guess that’s why you have scouts, to find guys under the radar like Banks.

I think they’re about equal, and if one of them pitches very well down the stretch, they would become a good fifth starter candidate for next year. Banks is probably the more likely person to do that, just because I bet Baek gets booted to the bullpen soon when CY comes back.

    Current score: 0
  15. Tom Waits Says:

#14@Ben B.: You would? Baek has got the edge in some peripherals, but Banks’ slow July is the only reason he has “just” a 46 point edge in ERA+. He’s basically been half-again as good as Baek in a Padre uniform, which doesn’t mean it will continue like that, but it’s a substantial gap.

I don’t think there’s a big gulf between them looking forward. On a good team they’re both probably best suited as long men, but if we had to pick one to be the 5th starter, I don’t see how it’s not Banks.

  16. PM Says:

Yes, the Candle Factory. As a restaurant, the tenant would need to arrange an entrance to Petco and a public entrance. I can see where some problems would be. Also its on the wrong side of the Gaslamp. Be dead in the off season. But if Winfield and Gywnn put their names on it, that would drive business. How bout that, Winfield and Gywnns or just Tony Gywnns. But another place to eat in the GL, hmmmm, ton of places are making it as it is.

Now, a Padre museum with a visiting HOF display would be interesting. Include a museum store and be open during the off season too. Seems the perfect size for a Padre museum. Probably not a $$$ maker though.

There is always a restaurant museum combo. Lots of TVs, things to do while the padres continue to, um, suck.

    According to MadFriars …

Cedric Hunter had three hits out of the leadoff spot in five at-bats, adding two RBIs and a run scored. He extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the process and his on-base streak to 22 contests. Hunter has six multi-hit games in his last seven and an RBI in three of his last four. Hunter is hitting .382 over his last 15 games with seven extra base hits and is hitting .383 out of the leadoff spot through 18 contests.

I’d certainly call up Venable to see if he can produce at the major league level but the problem is where does he play? Center and left field seem to be out since Headley needs to play everyday and I think the Padres need to see whether Hairston is capable of being the everyday CF next season.

The only options seem to be to trade either Giles or Kouzmanoff (or Venable). It doesn’t seem like the Padres want to trade Giles or even if they can get fair value for him with his no-trade plus trade escalator. So they will have to determine whether their optimum team has Kouz at 3B and Headley in left, or Headley at 3B and Venable in the OF. It would be a lot easier and better to make that decision this season then doing it for next season.

Re: Clark trade - I forgot that they had to open a spot to add the 12th pitcher again. Is Tomko eligible to return from the DL or will it be someone else?

On a related note, I was able to catch some of the AAA All-Star game on ESPN yesterday. Portland reliever Edwin Moreno can throw some heat. Not sure if it was a fast gun, but he was hitting 97 mph consistently and even hit 98 at least once. The fact that he’s around 28 years old and still in the minors tells you that he probably doesn’t have much of a secondary pitch (he appeared to be throwing a split-fingered type pitch but it wasn’t really missing any bats) but he might be an interesting guy for the Padres to take a look at later this season.

  24. Paul R Says:

I think that the Twins might be a possibility for Kouzmanoff. They’re getting terrible production out of third base and they’ve got interesting young talent. Denard Span, a CF who has come on in the last few months, might be a possibility. He might be blocked by Carlos Gomez ahead of him and the Twins have a similar player in Ben Revere coming up behind him. Span would look good as an athletic CF in Petco.

I think that Brown’s an intriuging prospect. Former closer at U of Ga. Good stuff; former high draft pick. I’d be excited about that acquisition. A few too many walks, but he’s only 23 and in his first full season in AA.

  31. Ben B. Says:

#15@Tom Waits: Well, Baek is striking out a lot more hitters, walking about the same, and giving up fewer home runs. The reason Banks has a nicer ERA is his BABIP is 50 points lower (.290 versus .340), and he’s stranded 81% of his runners, as opposed to 61% for Baek. There could be some discussion here about “lucky” versus “non-predictive”, which you could use to make an argument for Banks having pitched better. However, in terms of core skills likely to translate into future success, Baek has been better at pitching for the Padres to this point.

Also, another in the log odds section is 25 year old Drew Macias. He did pretty well at Portland last year in 120 PA’s and he plays really good defense. Should the Pads give him a look when the rosters expand in September ?

  44. Tom Waits Says:

#21@Schlom: Not sure that its better or easier to do it now; Kouz will be more valuable if he hits 280 with 23 HR for a full season than he is now, Headley isn’t going to forget how to play 3b, and this is Venable’s first sustained success in the high minors.

#31@Ben B.: Striking out 5 more hitters in 8 less innings doesn’t seem like a lot. It’s pretty easy to imagine Baek getting 2 strikeouts in his next 12, while Banks gets 7 in his next 6. If we’re talking who’s pitched better for the Padres this year, then there’s no way it’s Baek. Whether it’s luck or not, he has a Germano-esque ERA+, while Banks ranks 2nd among our starters.

#39@Paul R: Yeah he does. And he’s not too old.

  45. Tom Waits Says:

#41@SDSUBaseball: Or starting the season with Germano in the rotation.

    Current score: 0
  46. JMAR Says:

#36@JP: Macias has been outstanding at San Antonio this season, although I’m not sure it’s enough for the Padres to keep him around. He’ll be a six-year minor league free agent after the season so he would have to be put on the 40-man roster if they want to keep him. I’ve heard that he is probably the best defensive CF in the system. He has some speed (13 SB), some pop (20 doubles, 4 triples, 6 HR), and a great BB/K ratio (58/56). I think he would be a valuable bench player in the future for someone.

    Current score: 0
  47. Schlom Says:

#29@Paul R: But the D-backs probably thought that about Scott Hairston last season. Although since they won the division I guess that trade didn’t really come back and “hurt” them.

#41@SDSUBaseball: Well, since they had Estes from the start of the season, that would mean that they were thinking of tanking from the beginning, which I can’t believe. I thought it was stupid to pitch him when the Padres weren’t out of it, but I think the one-two punch of Tomko and Estes will help the Padres get at least something out of this season.

    Current score: 0
  48. Schlom Says:

#44@Tom Waits: I agree but they need to free up their outfield/3B logjam somehow. Plus I’m not a huge fan of playing a 3B in the outfield. An outfield of Venable/Hairston/Giles with Gerut as the 4th outfielder would certainly be pretty good defensively (not sure if they would hit enough though we should find out the rest of this season).

I could also see if they don’t really trade anyone but Wolf and Maddux. The division is terrible and there is no real reason why they couldn’t contend next season if they make some better off-season moves.

    Current score: 0
  49. Paul R Says:

47: I guess that with a young guy like Hairston (a former top prospect) you do worry about him hurting you in the future. Tony Clark is 36 and this is the last year of his contract.

    Current score: 0
  50. Ben B. Says:

#44@Tom Waits: It’s strikeouts in 18% of PA versus 12%. But you’re right, it’s a small sample size, we’re just splitting hairs. Bottom line, I’d like one of them to pitch well down the stretch, with strong peripherals to match, to become a viable fifth starter option for next year. I don’t feel comfortable with either at this point, Baek because he has struggled in his major league time, and Banks because his stats look like Germano’s with more fly balls.

#47@Schlom: Boy, the D-backs could sure use Hairston in left field now. Their left fielders are hitting .207/.285/.338.

    #55@Phantom:
I was actually stationed in that place for about 4 months in 2004. It was among the worst places I was at — there was absolutely nothing to do and we were sitting on our asses while there was a war going on. Probably 95% of the infantry grunts would have rather have been back in Iraq (we were there in 2003).

You do both realize that people do die just from exercise, don’t you? And, despite what his father thinks, it doesn’t matter whether you are in decent shape. Did he not read about the US Men’s Olympic Trials Marathon? Ryan Shay, a near world-class runner, collapsed and died after only 5 easy miles (at least for him). When it can happen to an athlete like him (who has doctors watching his every move) it can certainly happen to some young kid.

I think everyone involves feels terrible about what happened but they were doing what they thought was right. But to act like there was some conspiracy or cover-up is pretty irresponsible.

#57@Schlom: Thanks for your comments, Schlom, you have some unique perspectives on this! I’m guessing that the family’s uncertainty is a product of their grief and frustration along with what I would describe as inevitable inconsistencies in details that are going to happen with an event such as this. My perception is that the Canham family feels responsible to make sure that what happened is well understood … and it sure seems like the Marines are doing that also, since the investigation is “ongoing”. And it prolly doesn’t help that we’ve all seen too many movies. Indeed, I agree with you that “everyone involved feels terrible about what happened but they were doing what they thought was right” … I think that’s called “tragedy” …

#59@LynchMob: I would largely agree with this. It seems suspicious because they were never given a straight answer. More and more details were leaked, which caused them to question what was going on.

  62. Schlom Says:

#60@Phantom: It’s actually nothing like the Tillman situation. The Army knew right away what happened to Tillman (that he was killed by his fellow Rangers) but decided for various reasons (whether to protect his family and his memory or simply for PR reasons) to put out a different story (which I think rational people can see why they did it).

Dustin Canham, on the other hand, just died exercising — although that “exercise” wasn’t exactly sanctioned by the Marines. But, with a near undetectable heart defect, it probably wasn’t a question of if but rather when he was going to die. Of course, that’s no consolation for his family.

I’ve brought this up before but I don’t think most people realize how deadly the military is even in peacetime. Even today in Iraq and Afghanistan there is a sizable percentage of non-hostile and preventable deaths — mixing young males even without weapons and vehicles doesn’t usually end up well.

The reasons for the cover-up were obvious — why would you want to tell his family that his fellow Rangers killed him? If possible, you’d probably want to protect the Rangers that actually did it. Believe me, he’s not the only person in the military that was killed by “friendly” fire that was reported as KIA. Who wants to hear that their loved one was killed that way? And what is gained by that?

Yeah, but Philly apparently doesn’t know that. Beane strikes again.

#73@parlo: F-!!! That just made my day. Worse than the Mariners - at least they didn’t get the -.

Honestly, Sportsline has been extremely harsh of their assessment of the Padres this season. Yes, the season is a disaster. But they make it sound like the Padres = the Pirates, when it is entirely possible that we have a winning season next year.

“Who wants to hear that their loved one was killed that way? And what is gained by that?”

What is gained by lying to them? (Besides saving face)

#79@SDSUBaseball: A great deal was gained by lying about it. Just as the Jessica Lynch story was fabricated. Their stories were used a a rallying cry to garner support for our invasion and occupation of Iraq.

#74@Pat: Wait, I do know what happened — he died of a heart attack while doing some form of the “Daily Seven” (assuming the article is correct, it seems that fact is clear). I’m not sure how that was preventable. It’s certainly possible that his heart defect wouldn’t have come up at anytime during his life — I’m sure there are people with the same condition that live life fine. Just because some kid dies in a tent in Djibouti while being screamed at by his superiors doesn’t mean that it was caused by them.

However, I understand that most of the time, the mainstream press (and a lot of the regular population) takes a dim view of the military so I understand the tone of the article. Unfortunately, that’s a sign of the times. Since I have experience with this sort of thing, and Jerry Crasnick and you don’t, my perception of it is probably more correct.

#71@Paul R: Hmm, difficult to say, because Blanton’s main value is that he’ll be around for a couple more years and that he’s a durable innings eater. Neither of those could be said about Maddux or Wolf. I think the main consequence of the deal will be removing a possible suitor for Wolf.

  84. Paul R Says:

83: Yeah. You’re right, the most important consequence is probably the loss of a potential suitor. Who are the other potential suitors for Maddux/Wolf?

And FJ reminded me of this fun fact …

An oddity of Clark’s four-month Padres career: He played a total of 22 innings on defense — all in one game! Yes, Clark played the whole 22-inning game against Colorado on April 17, his only appearance at first base this year.

    … truely bizarre!

Some of the conversation about Canham and family has gotten pretty personal and potentially offensive. None of us know what happened and I’m not sure that this is an appropriate forum for the conversations that are happening.
