I woke up this morning with some random Cult song stuck in my head. It wasn’t their earlier stuff, either, but that late-model crap that sounds like a knock-off of a knock-off of AC/DC.

Bleh…

I’m still bewildered as to how you guys manage to post all day and still keep your jobs. I took today off and still couldn’t manage but to just hit the F5 key.
    I’m feeling a win tonight.

SAN DIEGO (AP) – The San Diego Padres claimed right-hander pitcher Brian Falkenborg off outright waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

Falkenborg had a 2-2 record with a 6.17 ERA in 16 relief appearances. Falkenborg was designated for assignment on Friday.

Falkenborg pitched briefly for the Padres in 2005, appearing in 10 games with a 8.18 ERA

Picking up from the last thread’s comments (Hart just tripled in three runs, so there’s not much of a game to discuss…), I think Tom Waits and Co. are failing to hear Schlom’s primary point: for the last two decades, the Padres have a terrible record regarding drafting players who go to major league success in San Diego. I’m probably missing somebody, but I can’t think of anybody in the last fiteen years outside of Peavy and Greene who were particularly successful for the Padres after we drafted them.

You can explain away the failures of each unfruitful pick, but when virtually none of your picks pan out, there’s a problem. I’m not saying Schlom’s right in his analysis of the failures, but he’s certainly correct in his assertion that the failures have been an organizational epidemic.

Note to Schlom: given our record of (not) developing our high draft picks into quality MLB players, maybe we’re better off not signing our high picks, and spending the money elsewhere. I don’t necessarily believe this, but I’m surprised it hasn’t crossed Schlom’s mind while he’s examining the futility of our drafts.

    #24@SDSUBaseball:

Only Nady and Lee were draft picks, if I’m not mistaken.

I was a big fan of the Nady pick, and supported him right up til the time I openly questioned Kevin Towers at a Baseball Prospectus event about the possibility that X was sleeping with Bochy’s wife. He’s become an average corner outfielder.

Lee deserved the MVP in his big year, and has been a quality regular (the best the Padres have drafted and developed since McReynolds, I think) for several seasons.

Bay was acquired from the Mets.

Perez, who of course left with Bay in the OG trade, still has Cy Young potential. I’d love to have him back, and suspect that he may find stardom as someone’s closer one day.

In summary, it appears that I missed Nady and Lee in my recollection. Keep in mind, however, that we drafted X eight years ago, and Lee FIFTEEN years ago.

#22@Lance Richardson: The fact that they should just bag their top picks and spend the money elsewhere has crossed my mind. I could certainly understand if they would do it — I wouldn’t agree with it but I could understand it — but the simple fact is that they probably wouldn’t spend the money elsewhere. If they go cheap there most likely they’d go cheap everywhere else.

#24, #26@LynchMob: Oh ya forgot about Bay.

What 1 inning? I think they should give him some more time there. Its not going to hurt anything and we have 4 outfielders hitting well right now, why not throw him at 2B for a game or two and see how he does. No one is hitting in the middle infield anyway.

Schlom will be happy to hear Strasburg is dominating at the Olympics tonight (tomorrow?). 7 innings, one hit allowed, one BB, 11 K’s. He’ll also be happy to hear that Seattle just scored 3 runs off of Francisco Rodriguez to move ahead 7-6 in the ninth. The two are related.

  36. Schlom
    Posted August 13, 2008 at 9:56 pm | Permalink

#35@Ben B. He’s definitely too good for the Netherlands. I wonder why Davey Johnson pitched him against the 2nd weakest (China is the worst) instead of against a better team? It wouldn’t shock me if he’s the best pitcher on that team — if Ben Sheets can pitch the USA Team to the gold over a pro team, there is no reason why Strasburg, who is even better, can’t do it. Speaking of ace pitchers, the Cubans lit up Yu Darvish yesterday (or today?) for 4 runs in 4 innings. Darvish is probably better then Matsusaka and turns only 22 in two days.

The problem with Strasburg is that the stupid Nationals keep on losing, they’ve lost 6 straight now. It’s going to take a lot for the Padres to stay “ahead” of them in the race for Strasburg.

    #35@Ben B.:

Yes…gotta stay ahead (behind?) Seattle and Washington for the lead in the Strasburg derby.

I think it’s a derby worth winning, too. Dude’s an unbelievable talent (BY FAR the best in the ‘09 draft class) and I think it’s unlikely that Tony Gwynn will treat him like a member of the Rice U staff.

    #32@SDSUBaseball:

I suspect that they are, in fact, getting better. But they have to absolutely FLOOD the system with talent, and not signing top picks is a concern.

I asked Depo at the BP event if the recent international FA signings were a harbinger of things to come, and I got the feeling that the FO intends to sign multiple top Latin FA’s on an annual basis- that’s why they built the Dominican facility. If so, the future will be very bright even if they only have average drafts.

    field39,

I believe Kellen felt some soreness is his right (non-throwing) shoulder. He’s been held out as a precaution.

#44@Ben B.: They also have Jake Arrieta. I guess the plan is to pitch all the starters once and see who pitches best? But whoever starts against the Dutch and Chinese is going to look awesome so I wonder if that means Strasburg is out? He is the youngest and has pitched the longest so maybe it makes sense to pitch him only once.

#22@Lance Richardson: But the current FO has only been in place for about 3 years and there’s no way you can tell whether or not their moves, drafting and philosophy are good, bad or indifferent yet. And I have not seen Schlom say anywhere he’s arguing the FO have been horrible over the past 20 years. I think he’s been quite clearly saying the current FO are idiots, which is absurd.

#29@LynchMob: Dirk needs to get a shot up here before the year is out. There’s certainly more to gain to that then by giving random journeymen like Corey innings.
