The sad thing is that I was looking forward to your being back in town (and presumably posting) more than the Padres.

With Troy Percival’s injury at Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who’d the Padres would want from that organization and who to trade?

I nominate Heath Bell for another arm (one major league ready starter). I haven’t looked into their system nor would I know who’s good even if I had. Or would another prefer a SS?

4: I’d bet that Bell is the closer next year here in San Diego. I doubt that he’s on the market unless we’re overwhelmed. If they were willing to give up Desmond Jennings (CF of the future) or Reid Brignac (SS prospect) I’d listen…

  6. Posted July 7, 2008 at 3:36 pm | Permalink

I wonder if Tampa or Milwaukee would be interested in Trevor? Giving Hoffy one last shot at the post-season might be win-win!

  7. Posted July 7, 2008 at 3:40 pm | Permalink

I don’t want the Padres to trade Heath Bell … he seems too valuable to the Padres … but if Jennings or Brignac are LaPorta-equivalents, then, as PaulR says, listening would seem to be prudent … and I’m confident that KT would … but I suspect he’s not shopping Bell at all …

If the Cubs are interested in Randy Wolf, do you think they’ll part with Rich Hill who’s been demoted to AAA and is struggling to regain his command?

If possible, the Padres should consider getting Pie as well. I don’t know how that’s going to work since the Cubs are not sure what to do with Pie. On one hand, he’s an insurance policy against Edmonds blowing up, on the other hand, they don’t want to hand him any job now that the OF is set with Murton as their 4th OF.

The Cubs cannot decide what to make of their young pitchers in Marshall and Gallagher either. Would the Padres be interested in them in Rich Hill is not available?

10: I doubt that the Cubs will give up Hill for Wolf. I just think that Hill probably has as good or better chance of helping the Cubs get to the postseason. The Padres should be talking to the Cubs though; the Brewers acquisition of Sabathia really puts the onus on the Cubs to do something.

I’d love to get Pie. I think it would take Wolf/Maddux+ young player(s).

Have we already taken a poll about who is going to the Pizza Feed event on Friday? I’m attending and hoping to see several Ducksnorters there. Instructions on how to attend/participate in the pregame talk with DePo are available at BP: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=922

#6@LynchMob: I bet Hoffman doesn’t pitch for another team. That is my desire, at least.

  14. Posted July 7, 2008 at 6:16 pm | Permalink

Also, the Cubs are hot and heavy for Harden, a better target than Wolf or Maddux.

Great….MLBTV not loading due to slow internet connection.
GY: anyway to show current game score on the blog? Just wondering.

  19. Posted July 7, 2008 at 7:18 pm | Permalink

#17@Field39: It’s possible they re-sign him, maybe not as a closer.

    It’s possible he retires.

I think pitching for another team is last on the list. It would seem neither party would want that. It would similar to Gwynn playing for another team.

  20. Posted July 7, 2008 at 7:20 pm | Permalink

    #18@Oside Jon: 0-0 after 1st

  21. Posted July 7, 2008 at 7:23 pm | Permalink

    #19@Kevin:
I think if Trevor has a good second half the Padres may resign him to a smaller deal/short term. Kind of like TGwynn did with contract based on plate appearances. Incentives, but nothing they could get screwed on if he totally collapses. Having said that I think Bell is closing next year.

  22. Posted July 7, 2008 at 7:26 pm | Permalink

#21@Oside Jon: I definitely agree with what you say about Hoffman. I think both sides would be agreeable to that.

As far as Bell, I’m not sure if they will do that.

The thing is, Bell pitches in higher leverage situations right now. Hoffman often comes in with three-run leads and gives up one or two runs and gets the save. Bell is quite a bit better than Hoffman right now and pitches in the tougher situations. He just doesn’t get the “cool” saves next to his name.

  25. Field39

#22@Kevin: Based on everything you said, Bell has high trade value and may not be around in any capacity next season.

  26. Posted July 7, 2008 at 7:36 pm | Permalink

    #25@Field39: I could see that.

    0-0 after 2nd

  27. Posted July 7, 2008 at 7:36 pm | Permalink

#22@Kevin: Well said and agreed. I think Bell will be great in that roll because of the high leverage situations. If Hoffy retires it’s a no brainer that Bell closes unless he’s traded. If he’s traded, and Hoffman retires than what’s the backup plan?

  28. Posted July 7, 2008 at 7:41 pm | Permalink

Wow, a caught stealing. I can’t see how it happened though.

  29. Posted July 7, 2008 at 7:46 pm | Permalink

#27@Oside Jon: Well, Towers has been good at answering those types of questions. The No. 5 starting is more important than any reliever because of the innings each of them pitch.

  62. Schlom
    Posted July 7, 2008 at 9:12 pm | Permalink

This is exactly why I didn’t want the Padres to recall Rodriguez — as the starters in the infield are pretty set and don’t need many days off – he’s going to be used mostly as a pinch-hitter. Unfortunately he can’t hit so it’s just throwing away an out. Why carry an offensive player (especially when you only have 5 bench players) that can’t hit? For that inning or two when you need a defensive replacement?

  63. Didi

Hmmmm. You the FO has got to look at all aspects of hitting at petco. The lighting, batters eye, hieght of the mound, wind direction, there has to be a reason Padres hitters are so bad and ordinary pitchers are so good at petco.

Some enterprising young grad student in physics ought to make a PhD out of it. Sandy should hire an expert to study it, serious.

There has to be a reason.

Of course, it could be that Padre hitters just suck.

BTW, Wally, consider making family plans after the ASB, FO needs a sacraficial lamb.
