The last time Johan Santana faced the Padres, he served up a homer to Dave Roberts (the last time Roberts took a southpaw yard) and lost to Darrell May in what appears to be the final victory of the latter’s big-league career. Baseball is a strange game…

Fun fact: Brian Giles normally comes to the plate accompanied by the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Scar Tissue.” When Wolf pitches, though, he uses Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London.”

  1. Remember when people used to get excited about being first???

  2. #1@Sean Callahan: I’m excited just to be there at all at this point.

  3. Looks like the DBacks are gonna win tonight. They are up 3-1, bottom 9th w/1 out.

  4. #3@Turbine Dude: When we get to .500, then we can start worrying about other teams. BTW, I left you a message on the earlier thread about your Cub youth. Baseball does strange things to the human psyche!

  5. Petco looks very very empty for a Friday night.

  6. In this day and age of baseball, I can’t understand why they place any importance with the W/L record for pitchers given the fact that there are so many middle relievers who can blow a possible no decision for a starter. I’d rather look at a pitcher’s ERA.

  7. Wow. I blinked and that half of the inning is over. Why can’t they do that when I have to get up at 4:30 AM the following morning?

  8. #6@Turbine Dude: Saves and W/L are already facing much more scrutiny.

  9. Hey nice hustle by Scotty. He has done that a few times this year.

  10. #4@parlo: I just went back and read your post. Very cool. In the 70′s (’75 or ’74 I think) my dad took me to watch the then Iowa Oaks play the Oakland A’s in an exibition game and I managed to get Rod Carew to sign my Little Leage glove on the thumb. It was the only glove I had. So, took protect that autograph, I put scotch tape over it. Wish I still had that glove!

  11. #4@parlo: I still wish ill thought upon our NL West ‘enemies’ regardless of our situation.

  12. #6@Turbine Dude: I thought everyone had dismissed W-L records 20 years ago.

  13. #12@Kevin: I know I had. But listen to any broadcast or sports talk radio and they tend to emphasize it. Why, I don’t know.

  14. Does anyone know how many 1st inning double plays the Padres have hit into this year?

  15. #13@Turbine Dude: Cause they are not as smart as us.

  16. #15@Steve: Yes. TOO MANY!

  17. #16@Kevin: Maybe it’s because the average Joe Schmuckatelli likes to hear the words ‘win’ and ‘loss’ and doesn’t understand the rest of the equation.

  18. #17@Turbine Dude: You think the same way I do! It’s good to be among kindred spirits.

  19. #18@Turbine Dude: I do think maybe they are more significant than 20 years ago. Because the amount of decisions can show a starter who is going deep into games.

    Just a thought.

  20. #20@Kevin: Nice thought. But I’d rather refer to the IP/G for that.

  21. #11@Turbine Dude: With age, I have a lot of respect for the 1950s-1960s Dodgers. In retrospect, the 1970s Dodgers were not a very likable team. Interesting point though; the 77-78 WS has a bunch of future MLB managers. Baker, Pinella, Randolph, Russell, etc. There is more!

  22. #22@parlo: IMO, baseball was the ONLY good thing about the ’70s! I cringe everytime some young kid mentions a ‘Retro Night’ or their idea of what was going on then.

  23. Randy is pitching really well tonight.

  24. When will Tony or Matt tell us what rule they claim relates to the player being touched? or did I miss it?

  25. #25@David V: In a round about way they just tried to. He was touched by a coach before he tossed the ball out of the dug out. Should have advance the runner. Spilt milk.

  26. #23@Turbine Dude: The A’s, Reds, Yankees, Pirates, Orioles, Dodgers. It was quite a decade.

  27. It must be Friday. I’ve already made 50% of the posts so far. Yikes! Maybe I’d better STFU for a while…

  28. This was dealt with ad naseum last night. I just don’t know the rule that they are referring to that says if a coach (or any other player off field, etc) touches someone then …

  29. Good work matt the Jinks 0-2

  30. #29@David V: I felt like the Aflak duck in the Yogi Berra commercial after that discussion last night.

  31. It looks like we once again missed our chance to hurt a good starting pitcher early on.

  32. OT: What happened to all of the creative nicknames that we gave players last year? ie. Silent L, OG, NOG, Branyon the Manyon, Shrek, etal.

We need to come up with some more DS nicknames…

  33. Gonzalez is the ninth best player in the league, according to Win Shares.

  34. Santana is only up to 79 pitches. How many more before his wheels fall off? 100 total?

  35. 54 pitches for Wolf through five innings.

  36. Bumper pool in the left field.

  37. #39@Kevin: That is impressive.

  38. 96.8 pitches a game for Santana.

  39. That’s awesome…you hit the guy but since the bat is sort of sticking out it gets called a strike and nothing happens!

  40. Santana just got a wake up call courtesy of R. Wolf!

  41. That is why AGone should be the Padres 2K8 MVP.

  42. #42@Kevin: Do you have your own personal stat team standing by? Just kidding. Good info. Thanks.

  43. What happened on that play? I’m at work.

  44. Ruh rho Raggy!

  45. Pure instinctive great play by AGon. Shades of Keith Hernandez on that one.

  46. #47@Kevin: Shot to shallow right center. OG comes up with it and throws to home.

  47. Scotty just made a play that Edmonds can’t. Only one run scores.

  48. Another great catch by Hairston

  49. #47@Kevin: You have wierd work hours. I think there is a law on the books against working during Padres night games.
