    http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/06/05/sports/padres/zf2d4afc18167dccb88257460000e2317.txt

    For example …

    – “Not one of our top 12 was left when it was our turn.” – Grady Fuson … so that tells me that Dykstra was #13 on the Padres’ board … interesting …

    – Fuson said all nine of the Padres’ first-day picks were in their top 60 … that’s the way it works, I s’pose …

    – “He played at an advanced level in college and could come quicker than most.” – Fuson … mark the tape!

    – Dykstra graduated from Rancho Bernardo with a 4.1 grade-point average and a 1,330 score on the Scholastic Assessment Test … yo, that’s a smart dude!

The result of the first Maddux vs Kent matchup was …

… so I guess the first battle was won by Maddux … but if it was a rope of a line out, then perhaps Kent can claim some semblance of victory also … what did you see in that AB?

We need to win 2 of 3 games vs. the Dodgers to keep our legitimate status. I’m starting to believe we can do it. Let’s keep grinding our way up the standings. Peavy coming back. Ledezma down. This is against an NL West rival so let’s kick some A.

Kershaw kind of reminds me of former Padres Mark Davis.

Kouzmanoff sometimes looks like he doesn’t have a clue up there. I knew after the first swing and miss against Kershaw in the first that he had little chance to make solid contact.

  30. Posted June 10, 2008 at 7:37 pm | Permalink

Something tells me that Maddux was a little PO’d about giving up a run in the 1st inning on 23 pitches :-)

Here’s how top of 2nd went down …

    - B. DeWitt grounded out to pitcher
    - A. Berroa grounded out to second
    - C. Kershaw struck out swinging

    … nothing wasted there!

    Pitches-strikes – C Kershaw 19-11; G Maddux 31-22.

    Ground balls-fly balls – C Kershaw 1-0; G Maddux 3-2.

    Batters faced – C Kershaw 5; G Maddux 9.

    … 8 pitches … sweet!

#31@Richard Wade: My first reaction is that you’ve considered 2 extremes (look at 2008 status vs look at career stats) … what I want the next All-Star team to be primarily based upon is the full 2007 season … and then use 2008 and career numbers as tie-breaker. And I’m much less concerned about including a hot-2008-guy on the team than I am about having him in the starting lineup. I want the starting lineup to be guys who have earned that spot based upon a great 2007 season on top of a great career. More later … I’ve gotta run now …

  107. Tom Waits
    Posted June 11, 2008 at 7:41 am | Permalink

#106@JP: Straight SLG and OPS will always look worse for Padres because of Petco. But even with adjusted stats, Kouz doesn’t fare well. His EQA is 254, one tick below Jose Castillo’s. If we go to GPA by the Hardball Times, he’s dead-center among NL 3b.

His splits are of great concern, like they were last year. He’s fattened up on LHP and starved against righties. I imagine his future relative to Headley is the cause of much discussion in the front office. If not, it sure should be.
