HEAD’S UP … I just noticed this announcement from Baseball Prospectus … Pizza Feed 2008 is *ON*!!!
BP BALLPARK EVENT IN SAN DIEGO

We are fortunate to see Greg Maddux pitch in a Padre uni … he da man!
A few *very* interesting comments about the Padres’ draft …
http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/06/05/sports/padres/zf2d4afc18167dccb88257460000e2317.txt
For example …
– “Not one of our top 12 was left when it was our turn.” – Grady Fuson … so that tells me that Dykstra was #13 on the Padres’ board … interesting …
– Fuson said all nine of the Padres’ first-day picks were in their top 60 … that’s the way it works, I s’pose …
– “He played at an advanced level in college and could come quicker than most.” – Fuson … mark the tape!
– Dykstra graduated from Rancho Bernardo with a 4.1 grade-point average and a 1,330 score on the Scholastic Assessment Test … yo, that’s a smart dude!
A commenter at MadFriars is reporting this …
Three Lake Elsinore players named to the High A All Star
Second baseman Eric Sogard
OF Sam Carter
OF Cedric Hunter
A commentor at MadFriars is reporting this …
Dykstra said he’s expected to report to Eugene in 7 days
… which is good news for me as I expect to be at their home opener on June 22nd
SAN DIEGO (AP)—San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy will come off the disabled list and face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AlXa1.hGHboGw1bcJaymPdsm0bYF?slug=ap-padres-peavy&prov=ap&type=lgns
#6@LynchMob: Eugene, huh? I was hoping we might get to see him at Elsinore by the end of the year.
Geez, Lynch, lay off the coffee.
Three NL teams have no leaders in the All-Star voting — top five at infield and catcher and top 15 in the outfield: Padres, Giants, Nationals.
#9@Pat: You want hyper … check out this oddity …
http://www.fortwayne.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/SE/20080610/SPORTS/806100306
Ft Wayne Wizards starting pitcher Mat Latos switched his jersey number from 22 to 35. He is currently on the disabled list with an injury to his abdomen.
… wonder what the story is behind *that*!!!???
I liked the Dog lineup better when it had the out-machine Andruw Jones in it …
Maddux vs Kent (with 1 out, man on 2nd) … are we watching a battle of future HOFers? I think so … enjoy it now!
DePosta’s current blog is on the concept of process / results. It starts with a link to Dusksnorts.
#13@LynchMob: Well, one Hall of Famer.
That’s frustrating. Maddux really jammed Martin there. Nice job of pitching goes unrewarded.
Anybody on-line watching the game?
The result of the first Maddux vs Kent matchup was …
– J. Kent lined out to third
… so I guess the first battle was won by Maddux … but if it was a rope of a line out, then perhaps Kent can claim some semblance of victory also … what did you see in that AB?
We need to win 2 of 3 games vs. the Dodgers to keep our legitimate status. I’m starting to believe we can do it. Let’s keep grinding our way up the standings. Peavy coming back. Ledezma down. This is against an NL West rival so let’s kick some A.
On Rome show today he reset the Mad Dog “excited on the mound” take. I’m no clone but that was funny stuff.
After top of 1st …
Pitches-strikes – G Maddux 23-14.
Ground balls-fly balls – G Maddux 1-2.
Batters faced – G Maddux 6.
#16@Geoff Young: So, would you say that Maddux was lucky to get Kent out on a line-drive … but unlucky to have Martin get a hit on a jam pitch?
#13@LynchMob: Unless the voters somehow go brain-dead…
#17@LynchMob: Kent hit the ball hard, but right at Kouz.
#16@Geoff Young: When you start off single, stolen base, there isn’t much margin for error.
Hairston still likes the high fastball.
Am I the only one with a frozen Ch. 4?
OT … Pujols was helped off the field in the top of the seventh inning with a strained left calf he suffered while running out a ground ball.
From here (ie. “watching” on the internet), that didn’t appear to be a very good AB for KK … nor OG for that matter … bleh …
GY: I have to tell you how deep this “Ducksnorts thing” has impacted my MLB watching. As I was at the game Sunday, all I wanted to do was get my laptop hoping there was wifi at Petco so I could post….but I didn’t have the laptop (do they even allow?). I kept observing and wondering what people at home were saying. I imagined after the Clark HR we were ecstatic!!! Anyway, you’ve added another dimension to Baseball watching. Gracias.
Having said that….maybe it’s best I just watch the game in person old school style when at Petco? =)
The padres have to win like sunday. I got a free jake peavy glove.
Kershaw kind of reminds me of former Padres Mark Davis.
Kouzmanoff sometimes looks like he doesn’t have a clue up there. I knew after the first swing and miss against Kershaw in the first that he had little chance to make solid contact.
Something tells me that Maddux was a little PO’d about giving up a run in the 1st inning on 23 pitches
Here’s how top of 2nd went down …
- B. DeWitt grounded out to pitcher
- A. Berroa grounded out to second
- C. Kershaw struck out swinging
… nothing wasted there!
Pitches-strikes – C Kershaw 19-11; G Maddux 31-22.
Ground balls-fly balls – C Kershaw 1-0; G Maddux 3-2.
Batters faced – C Kershaw 5; G Maddux 9.
… 8 pitches … sweet!
Howard, any thoughts on my updated list for NL All-Star team?
http://intentionalblogonballs.com/2008/06/10/debating-the-nl-all-star-team/
My (9 yr old) son is going crazy online MLB voting for Adrian and KG for the all star game. 25 times. KG doesn’t deserve it but he’s his favorite so oh well…..
Nice sliding catch by Giles on a sinking liner off the bat of Ethier.
#31@Richard Wade: My first reaction is that you’ve considered 2 extremes (look at 2008 status vs look at career stats) … what I want the next All-Star team to be primarily based upon is the full 2007 season … and then use 2008 and career numbers as tie-breaker. And I’m much less concerned about including a hot-2008-guy on the team than I am about having him in the starting lineup. I want the starting lineup to be guys who have earned that spot based upon a great 2007 season on top of a great career. More later … I’ve gotta run now …
After top of 3rd …
Pitches-strikes – C Kershaw 28-19; G Maddux 37-26.
Ground balls-fly balls – C Kershaw 3-1; G Maddux 4-4.
Batters faced – C Kershaw 9; G Maddux 12.
… 6 pitches … are you kidding me! I hope Jake is charting pitches tonight
Geez, Hairston crushed that pitch. Too bad it was foul.
#31@Richard Wade:
Richard, good work. Hard to see (as a Padre fan) Jason Bay and X Nady in there but!!!…..Adrian deserves at least a selection and I believe he will get it. Nice honest assesment…..Dig it.
#1@LynchMob: Hensley with 2 nice IPs to get his evening underway for Portland at Las Vegas …
Beautiful 10-pitch walk for E-Gon.
I would be terrified to stand in against Kershaw. The guy throws extremely hard and has no idea where the ball is going.
Kooooooz !
Kouz helping Kershaw out there. That was a terrible pitch.
#37@Oside Jon: Thanks Jon. Though I did rule out Nady because of his less than All-Star quality performance in prior seasons.
Today is the day I’ve officially become old. I just realized the Clayton Kershaw is younger than I am.
#43@Richard Wade:
I hear ya and must have mis-read. Listed as back up to back up…..Just seeing him mentioned made me doubt some trades the Pad’s made.
A little late but that was awesome work by Maddux to get outta the inning.
Willie Randolph Mets managerial job in the Gotham City is on life support. His Mets are down, after leading 5-1, to the Dbacks in the 9th by a score of 6-5.
Chip Ambres continues his red-hot hitting by blasting a 3 run homerun to put the Beavers up 4-0
Disclaimer : No Schlom, I am not related to Chip Ambres.
#45@Oside Jon: My proposal would be to base it on 2007 to the present or the last half of 2007 and first half of this season.
Antonelli is 0-2 to start tonight’s game. He must show up every day, waiting for that tap on the shoulder. “Hey Matt, do you got a minute.” Right about now, demoting him would be an act of mercy.
Let’s get a friggen win for Maddux again. This is insane – the luck he’s had this season.

Worth reading..
Here’s one for you – our feared 5th place hit Kevin Kouzmanoff hasn’t hit a two bagger *double* since May16th. He only has 8 doubles for the year !
#51@Oside Jon: Jon, what about the support (or lack of) Randy Wolf has received ?
Nice peg by Hairston to nail Loney at the plate! Great job by Barrett to hold his ground.
What a throw by Hairston ! Right on the money !
Yet another QS for a Padres starter !
#57@JP: Do we know that he has left the game?
After KK walk – Matty V. ” – Good appearance by Kevin (Kouz)”.
With all due respect Matty, none of Kershaw’s pitches were within a foot of the strike zone.
#58@Kevin: Ahhh gotcha ! If he pitches the 7th and gives up 4 runs then it is not a QS. Unlikely but my pronoucement is premature.
#53@JP: Through tonight’s plate appearances Kouzy is just a tick below average. Not what you want out of your third baseman, but he’s still our fifth best hitter among those with at least 100 PA.
And the new pitcher comes bearing gifts.
#61@Richard Wade: I agree that there are no better options which says a lot.
Fifth best hitter on the worst hitting team in the majors.
We got our point. Bullpen needs to take over for Maddux.
Ugly at bat by Tony.
#63@JP: Having your fifth best hitter relative to position be roughly league average isn’t really that bad.
#62@Geoff Young: And more gifts !
I smell another 2-1 victory !
#66@Richard Wade: Can I borrow your rose colored glasses ? Have you taken a peek at Kouzmanoff’s power numbers ?
#67@JP: Don’t jinx it.
What is Huber doing out there? He knows he’s supposed to catch the ball, right?
Someone has to catch that ball. That was just horrible.
What will Clay deliever?
1. Double play grounder.
2. Thousand hop base hit.
3. Bolt into next week.
Poor Maddux.
Poor Maddux.
#68@JP: Feel free to learn how to read a stat line.
Didn’t mean to double post. Sorry.
Well, that’s just bad luck for Bell.
#75@Richard Wade: That was just snippy. Disregard.
When you give them four outs, bad things happen.
Great, Huber’s inability to catch a baseball has cost us the lead. Martin never should have batted this inning.
I’d be pissed off if I were Maddox right now.
Ladies and gentlemen, how not to play baseball.
Why is Huber still even on the team again? It makes no sense that Headley is still in AAA while Huber is wasting a roster spot.
Wouldn’t it be logical to put in a real outfielder instead of a converted catcher/first basemen in the late innings of a close ball game?
Blame this game on Bud (with an assist to Huber)…or maybe the other way around?
Did the Dodgers hit one ball hard that inning?
OMG, OG got on!
Giles’ 50th single of the year there.
#86@Turbine Dude: He only does that about 43% of the time.
Nice play at third. A-Gon was robbed.
That was hit harder than anything the Dodgers hit in the previous half inning.
The Padres show how, not to play defense, and the Dodgers show, how to play defense.
#88@Richard Wade: My point being, he shouldn’t have that time. The Dogs screwed up.
#92@Turbine Dude: Not a great deal more than on any other hit. If he’s not hustling down the line, he’s out anyway.
That was one sweet dp!
Even if they lose, that has to be the play of the game!
Nice moving screen by Adrian to keep Broxton from “running” toward first base… Okay, now Huber decides to catch the ball.
So much for our winning streak. I think I need to go to bed now. Maybe we’ll get ‘em tomorrow.
Oh crap. Glad I missed the carnage. Just turning on TV I could tell by Matt V’s voice we were down….Maddux gets worked by the rest of the team again. Always tomorrow. Or a comeback?
Jon
I am very impressed by Thatcher’s performance.
E-3 is the right call there. Adrian has to come off the bag.
Go get them manana.
#1@LynchMob: The Dirk Hayhurt bubble bursts tonight … 7 hits and 7 ERs in 0.1 IP … ouch …
Chase with a double + 2 walks … Antonelli with a hit (1-for-4) …
#102@LynchMob: Uh, sorry for unintended puny typo … we seem to struggle getting Dirk Hayhurst’s name correct in these comments …
Giles’ on-base is now .423.
#78@Richard Wade: No problem as I was snippy as well.
#78@Richard Wade: But Richard (and you may be long gone for the evening) KK’s SLG % and OPS ranks at the bottom for third baseman throughout the majors. So what I am reading wrong regarding the “stat lines”. I’ll catch you perhaps tomorrow.
#106@JP: Straight SLG and OPS will always look worse for Padres because of Petco. But even with adjusted stats, Kouz doesn’t fare well. His EQA is 254, one tick below Jose Castillo’s. If we go to GPA by the Hardball Times, he’s dead-center among NL 3b.
His splits are of great concern, like they were last year. He’s fattened up on LHP and starved against righties. I imagine his future relative to Headley is the cause of much discussion in the front office. If not, it sure should be.
