One thing I find interesting about this season is how the local media has chosen to portray the Padres when things haven’t gone well. There’s almost an “I told you so” glee in descriptions of the team’s struggles. It makes me wonder what anyone did to piss off Nick Canepa and some of his colleagues…

  1. Clay Hensley has given up 2 HRs in the 2nd inning tonight pitching for Portland …

(ChaseH with a triple in the 1st)

  2. OT … for a pre-game distraction … I guess this is why folks had high expectations for the Tigers this year …

    … yowza!

  3. I dont see it as a form of glee by the UT writers. If anything, the Padres FO was given a free pass for a long time. Does anyone really believe that Headley was not brought up for any reason other than financial ? Yet we are constantly told stories about how he needs to play more night games, or the time isnt just right yet. It will suddenly be the right time after June 1.
Reporters dont like being lied to anymore than the general public does.
It is their job to ask questions. They may tow the line for a while with fluffy stories about Jim Edmonds swagger, or Happy Hairston, but eventually the BS train comes to a halt.
If SA and KT continue to say with a straight face that this was a legitimate 90 win team, then they deserve to be denied credibility.
SA seems to treat the fans intelligence with about as much respect as a Carls Jr employee.

  4. #1@LynchMob: Dirk Hayhurst has also given up a couple of runs but he continues to impress with the strikeout numbers (6 K’s in 3 IP tonight). That gives him 44 K’s in 33.2 innings this season. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t throw very hard. I’m interested in knowing how he’s striking out so many batters. Good breaking ball, maybe?

  5. #2@parlo: The dates of call-ups have nothing to do with eventual arbitration and service time. It’s when Headley is called up compared to other players with similar experience. June 1 is not a magic date, even if the Padres think it is.

Here is how it works (see No. 2):

A player and club who cannot agree on a contract may agree to salary arbitration, provided that the player has enough service time in the majors. The following players are eligible for arbitration:

    (1) Players with at least 3 but less than 6 years of service in Major League Baseball;

    (2) The top 17 percent of players with at least 2 but less than 3 years of Major League service. These are known as “Super 2” players. To qualify as a Super 2, a player must have accumulated at least 86 days of service in the previous year. Historically, the cutoff point for Super 2 status is 2 years, 128 days of service, though the requirement has been as high as 2 years, 140 days in years past.

    (3) Players who have filed for free agency may also go through the arbitration process if their former team makes an offer of arbitration and the player accepts.

  6. #2@parlo:

    Agree 100%. Tired of fluf.

  7. As Jerry Coleman would put it: “He slides into third with a stand up triple!”

  8. This sucks. I’m an educated person, and that is all I can come up with. This sucks.

  9. #8@Kevin: Hard knocks.

  10. Sure is quiet in here tonight.

  11. #9@Turbine Dude: Nice. I did some graduate work in getting my ass kicked.

    Nice triple by McAnulty.

  12. Big E on the Reds there!

  13. They ruled it as a single for Gooch. Good for him. But, that was an error.

  14. I can’t remember the last time there were this few posts in here.

  15. That catch was unbelievable!

  16. Adams getting a lot of work in his brief stint. For those of us out of tv range, how does he look?

  17. #2@parlo: “Does anyone really believe that Headley was not brought up for any reason other than financial ?”

Raises hand. Um, yes, I believe having never played LF and with barely a cup of coffee above AA it was a good idea to have him start the year in AAA, learn to play the position, and get some further seasoning against professional pitching. Is that really so hard to believe?

  18. No worse than Thatcher or Merideth.

  19. Clark finally did something right.

  20. Henn looked great that inning. Great catch, too.

  21. Nice throw by Henn there.

  22. Any word if we’ll see Barrett this weekend?

  23. Crap. I’ve rooted for some VERY bad Padre teams over the last 35 years, so I can handle this.

Sadly, I saw this coming (Geoff can attest that I told him so during Spring Training.). This is a bad team, and Chase Headley in LF wouldn’t add more than one or two wins over the course of a season.

The organization needs to begin stockpiling young talent, by any means necessary. I can deal with a couple of rough seasons, if I have a sense that the FO has a plan. Bell, Young, Giles, Maddux, Meredith, and either Kouz or Headley should all be on the market. If the majority of those players haven’t been flipped by this time next year for talent that might play a role in the next contending Padre team, then I’ll start complaining.

  24. Another shattered maple death stick…

  25. Padres baseball, endure it.

  26. #26@Field39: It’s still baseball. Better than basket ball or hockey. Besides, fair weather fans don’t count anyway.

  27. #27@Turbine Dude: It is difficult for me to deal with the dog days of august, in mid May.

  28. Oh no.

I watched the French Connection instead. Gene Hackman rules. So do the Cocteau Twins. Good night baseball.

  29. #29@Oside Jon:

Jon, I am a HUGE Cocteau Twins fan, and I believe Geoff is, as well.

I’ll put on “Blue Bell Knoll” now, and bid thee goodnight…

  30. #2@parlo: I’m not sure what you’re referring to specifically, but whenever I’ve heard Alderson try to address fans as though they are intelligent, his message invariably isn’t understood.

    #17@Pat: Huh, interesting theory. ;-)

#30@Lance Richardson: Yep, can’t get me enough Cocteaus.

  31. #30@Lance Richardson: #32@Geoff Young:

Just saw “Heaven or Las Vegas” was one of your road albums on the way to Cooperstown from the 2008 annual. Thought I’d reference them last night to cheer us up. Great band and great album. 4AD has a lot of great bands.

    Over and out,
    Jon
